ASSIGNMENT -2
1. The gas having the following composition is at a temperature of 775 K .SO2 = 7.09%, O2 =10.55%, SO3 = 0.45%, and N2 = 81.91%.Calculate the heat content of 1 k mole gas mixture
over 298 K using heat capacity data given below:
Gas a b×103 c×10
6 d×10

Flue
gas leaving the boiler stack at 523 K has the followingcomposition on mole basis:
CO2 =11.3%, H2O = 13.04%, O2 = 2.17%, and N2 =73.48%.Calculate the heat lost in
1 K mole of gas mixture above 298 K using heat capacity data given below :
Gas a b×103 c×10
6 d×10

CO2 21.36 64.28 -41.05 9.79
H2O 32.49 0.07 13.21 -4.54
O2 26.02 11.75 -2.34 -0.56
N2 29.59 -5.41 13.18 -4.96
3. In a process to manufacture HCl, common salt and sulfuric acid are heated together. TheHCl gas produced is cooled and absorbed in water to produce 31.5% HCl (by weight). SomeHCl is lost during absorption. To produce 1 ton of 31.5% HCl, 550 kg of common salt and
480 kg of 98% H2SO4 were taken. The reaction goes to completion. Calculate:
i. Which reactant is in excess?ii. What is the amount of HCl lost?
iii. Calculate the composition and quantity of residue left behind when 50% of water is
distilled off.
