Many people have reported even more sightings of one or more coyotes in the park. The following is of one of the latest forwarded to the Harbor Lights editor by Judy Krafchak of Lot #91…. “(I) just wanted to touch base with someone in the park - this morning (Wednesday, January 2, 2008) as I was leaving for work at 6:30 a.m. I saw a coyote. It seemed to go between houses #8 and #9. I will mention it to anyone I see as well. But since many of us walk our animals at night and early in the morning, I thought I would mention it. One is never certain what this animal will and can do so it’s best to keep our guard up. Just hope that no one feeds it and that it will move on soon. I heard they will eat the fruit lying around under any of the citrus trees. And that we should all keep our trash cans securely covered.” Coyote Sightings at Desert Harbor For more information about coyotes, visit...http://www.desertusa.com/ june96/du_cycot.html Coyote Vital Statics Weight: 15-45 lbs. Another year has just come and went. Thanks for everything you did this past year tohelp the Organization. I wish you all a Happy,Healthy, and Prosperous New Year.

As I look back at the year 2007, a lot wasaccomplished. We had some great events thatwere well attended. The By-Laws wereamended with a lot of good changes. Everyonewas given a chance to participate in the voting for changes to By-Laws andwith the election of officers and Board member. Thanks for the great partici-pation.

Now we start a new year. We are planning a great amount of activitiesthis year. In January we are having a chili cook-off with a chili supper to follow. Also we will be sending out another survey sheet like last year to see whatyou all want to have in activities. Then in February we will have a Super BowlParty if we can generate interest in that. Then comes the Mardi Gras with alot of good food and Dixie Land music. We also hope to have a Valentine DayDinner. February is looking busy.

I hope we have even more people participate this year in all our activities.Happy New Year everyone!

As 2007 came to a close, ap-proximately 50 Desert Harbor resi-dents and guests gathered to lamentabout the old and then to ring in theNew Year with song, dance and as-sorted merriment. This New Year’sEve Party was all that and much more.People were seen laughing almost tothe point of tears as many brave yetshameless souls stood together to passcucumbers, oranges and even a life-saver or two from person to person(all of course without hands). It wassaid Bob and Char Mueller did sopoorly, they gave up and opted tohave the cucumber start from the otherend of the line….their team still lost!

There was plenty of food and evenchampagne, noise makers includingpoppers were the faire at midnight. Itwas a fun night and all had a good time, despite themselves.

Jan Ginsburg, #183, served aschairperson and did a great job withmany in a supporting role with thisevent like: Dave Blomeyer, PatBallock, Margaret Poshka, ToniAgue, Jack and Judy Quetschenbackand others too numerous to name here.

Thank you everyone for makingthis New Year’s Party fun for all!

You Can Help!A community newsletter should not be the responsibility of just one person but a combined collection of bits

and pieces from many in the neighborhood. The information you submit can be assembled in an interestingand informative way and printed in our newsletter. It’s really very simple. Everyone can be involved and I offersome suggestions to show you how. Submit a little information about your personal activities such as: Provide a restaurant review from a night out Recommend a fun or interesting place to visit Recap a movie or play you attended Describe the birds and other creatures of nature that you see If you have had good service from a business, share your experience in a note Write an open letter to the editor: You can be critical, suggestive, or even nice Submit some vacation pictures and a little about your experience …these are just some samples how you can be involved. This can be “your” newsletter. The community can and should be involved each month. Place your

thoughts and words (pictures too) in the Suggestion Box at the clubhouse, or place a note in my cubby slot#206, or send an e-mail message to [email protected] ... Don Walker, newsletter editor

LADIES LUNCHEON Agnes Miller, coordinator

Ladies Luncheon will be Tuesday, January 15th at....

and is always a favorite with the ladies luncheongroup. The Serranos started their Restaurant businessin 1979 when Ernie and Eva were working in their longtime family business, Serrano’s Clothing Store, indowntown Chandler going back to 1919.

Tired of their original clothing store business, Ernieand Eva Serrano changed direc-tions and opened their firstMexican food restaurant in1979. This was just behindtheir clothing store in down-town Chandler. With successin the restaurant business, theyleft the clothing store and put all their efforts into theirnew and growing restaurant business. Today, theSerrano family owns and operates 8 restaurants with7 locations in the Southeast area plus Brunchie’s, abreakfast and lunch restaurant in downtown Chandler.

December’s luncheon was at Charleston’s Res-taurant in Mesa. We had 33 ladies who joined us.Everyone enjoyed their food and the atmosphere withChristmas decorations. With this large of a group wewere a little crowded but managed. Some ladies onone end of our table made a suggestion for doing alunch with soup and salad at the clubhouse. Every-one could bring either soup or salad to share. When Ipassed the suggestion around, I got another opinion...“we should stay with going out to restaurants.” I wouldlike to hear what others think so let me know yourthoughts. In the meantime we’ll put this on hold untilafter February.

We always gather at the clubhouse around 11:00a.m. then car pool to the restaurant. Sign-up in theclubhouse if you are a lady and want to join us.

Desert Harbor residents are experiencing tempo-rary delays entering and leaving the community thesedays. Construction work on the section by us beganon Monday, Dec. 31, and delays are expected throughthe end of February. The road is being reconstructedand widened to accommodate the increasing trafficvolume…currently between 20,000 and 25,000 ve-hicles use Ironwood daily.

The graphic below shows Ironwood roadwayconfiguration between US 60 and Baseline aftercompletion. For additional information about theIronwood-Gantzel Roadway Improvement Project, visit www.ironwoodproject.com

It is my understanding that the back access gatewill soon be available giving residents another way toenter and leave our community. Residents should beable to use the same remote control currently for thefront grate. Ironwood-Gantzel Project specs includeinstallation of a traffic light at the corner of 36th Streetand Ironwood Dr. which will make it safer to merge toIronwood Drive northbound. These estimatedchanges should take place within the next six (6)months. More info will be provided when available.

As reported in the TRIBUNE…

Audit CommitteeRecommendationsDesert Harbor Activities OrganizationDated: November 30, 2007

A few residents expressed concerns about theOrganization’s accounting practices and requestedthat the books be audited to insure accurate recordkeeping. The President appointed three (3) volunteersto review the ledger(s) of the Treasurer and makewhatever recommendation(s) deemed necessary andprovide a written report to the Board for presentationto the residents at the Annual Residents Meeting inDecember.

The committee consisted of Rita Champion, #37,Karen Majur #173, and Rose Brunett #140. The threereviewed the treasurer’s records and found no glaringproblems but the Committee offered, in part, thefollowing recommendations:

1. Attach all deposit slips to bank statementsand deposit slips (for) all checks should belisted separately. Photocopy depositslip(s) and attach to statements.

2. 50/50 Drawing amounts should be an-nounced (at the time of drawing with) 50%going to the club and 50% going to thedrawing winner. Receipt records shouldbe prepared for both transactions.

3. (The Organization’s) Checkbook should bebalanced each month on the Ledger.

4. Change checkbook to “three-to-a-page”check (style) or (to) a business typechecking account.

5. All checks (written) should have two (2)(Board officer’s) signatures

6. All petty cash transactions should berecorded on a receipt.

7. When the Treasurer leaves town (onvacation, etc.), all (appropriate) treasuryrecords and (active) checkbook(s) shouldbe (temporarily) given to the President orVice President.

8. All record-keeping should be done onpaper ledger(s).

These along with other recommendations weresubmitted to the Board on November 30, 2007, andcopies made available to the residents at the AnnualResidents Meeting on December 1, 2008.

Every year for the past several years, DesertHarbor residents share the Christmas spirit by deco-rating their homes. This season was no different butit seemed even more people participated this timethan in recent memory. It was wonderful to see. Ascustomary, American Land Lease gets involved aswell by encouraging homeowners in their efforts witha “best decorated home” contest and awarding giftcertificates to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners.

Judging the many decorated homes is never easy.Holiday decorations are individual expressions of theseason and every effort no matter how extensive orsmall, whether inside or out, the feeling of Christmasis shared by all. With each colorful setting and all thebright lights, the whole community becomes involvedwith the joy of the season.

Non-resident judges viewed each home in thepark. The judging took place on Wednesday evening,December 19th and they made their decisions basedon anonymity by taking into consideration individualeffort and the overall spirit of the season. The winners of A.L.L. gift cards were:

Holiday HomeDecorating Contest

PennyNewby, #185, and others

had an idea and asked that resident volunteersorganize and sing Christmas songs for Desert Harborfriends and neighbors. She printed announcementsfor the event and set Monday, December 17th as thedebut of the first ever Desert Harbor Carolers. Theplan was good and we did have a lot of fun spreadingcheer to many in our community. None of us, how-ever, anticipated just how cold it was going to get. There were at least thirteen of us riding in 3 golfcarts…yes just 3 carts! What we didn’t share intalent, we excelled with enthusiasm.

We met at the clubhouse around 6:00 p.m. tocollect song sheets, maps to specific homes tar-geted, tuned our vocal cords and boarded a line up ofe-carts (remember I said 3) and then we beganspreading merriment throughout the community. There were more than twenty (20+) holiday songs onas many pages, one battery powered CD player, 3CDs and one flash light for 13 people who neededsinging lessons. By the time we had traveled to mostof the targeted homes in the park, we actually weresounding pretty good. We figured out we did betterrepeating 3 songs we knew than trying to read thewords of many others in the dark…not a good plan.

We all enjoyed the evening and finished back atthe clubhouse with cookies and hot drinks. All in all, itwas a very nice evening. “Merry Christmas andHappy New Year” was our message to everyone.

Somewhere, there are peopleTo whom we can speak with passion

Without having the wordscatch in our throats.

Eyes will light up as we enter,Voices will celebrate with us,

Whenever we come into its power.

Community means strength thatjoins our strength

To do the work that needs to be done.Arms to hold us when we falter.

A circle of healing.A circle of friends.

Someplace where we can be free.
