PLC Early Release Day Info:

Gilbert Public Schools will continue early release Wednesdays throughout the 2016-2017 year district wide, stu-dents will dismiss one hour early on most Wednesdays. During this time, teachers at all Gilbert schools will be meeting in Professional Learning Communities. During PLCs, teachers with common courses have designated time to come together with the purpose of examining student progress. They will be looking for areas in which students may be struggling, right on target, or ready for an extra push. These discoveries will help them to refine or retool lessons, to deepen and strengthen the content of their classes, and to use the expertise of their colleagues to con-tinually improve their practice. We are excited for this opportunity each week in order to make sure that we are meeting the individual needs of each of our students on campus, and to carry out our mission of “Every Person, Every Day!”

Library News:

Mrs. Flaherty and Mrs. Jeffers would like to invite all the new freshmen and returning students into the library this school year. The library is open from 7:15-3:00 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Fri-day. On Wednesday we are open from 7:15-1:30. Students will find thousands of books, hundreds of en-cyclopedias, school textbooks, credible databases, computer/printer access and Chromebook charging stations. Can you help? Please consider donating any new or used books to our school library. New releases and popular teen titles (such as John Green books) are most needed, however, any books brought in will be assessed for appropriate use. If they are not needed on campus, they will be used as trades towards purchasing appro-priate titles. Simply leave the books with the receptionist or have your child bring them into the library. Thank you for supporting your library! Band Updates:

We had an anonymous donor step up and make a very large donation towards the purchase of a new equipment trailer for the band. Instead of having multiple small trailers, it was decided to go big or go home and get a full size semi trailer. It was recently delivered from California and we're very excited! Next step will be getting it wrapped with our colors and logo and selling sponsorship! If you get a chance to check it out, it is currently parked by the portables. Thank you to all for your continued en-couragement and support of the band.

Choir News:

On the weekend of August 12th, the Campo Verde HS Concert Choir traveled north to Prescott for their annual retreat. The singers camped at Camp Pine Rock where they worked on team building, bonding activities, getting to know you activities, and goal setting for the year to come. The ensemble will travel this year to multiple festi-vals around Arizona and will be performing on stage at Carnegie Hall in April. We hope you plan to join us for our concerts this year. Our first performance will be on Thursday, October 6th in the CVHS Audi-torium at 7 PM. More information can be found at cvhschoirs.com or by email the director, Mr. Flora at [email protected]. Campo Verde FELLOWSHIP OF CHRISTIAN ATHLETES (FCA)

FCA meetings will be held every two weeks on Tuesday's during the fall semester (9/20, 10/4, 10/18, 11/1, 11/15, and 12/6). All student-athletes are invited, encouraged, and welcome to attend. We will enjoy Fellowship, food, and a great speaker. Please see Coach Cornell with any questions.

National Honor Society

It is an honor to be a member of the National Honor Society. National Honor Society members actively serve their com-munity, maintain a 3.8 weighted GPA, lead their peers, and demonstrate excellent character. During the spring semester, sophomores and juniors with at least a 3.8 weighted GPA will be invited to apply for NHS membership. As part of the application, students will need to demonstrate that they exhibit the four pillars of NHS: character, scholarship, leader-ship, and service. National Honor Society members volunteer their time to fellow students on Saturday mornings at the Campo Verde library. Topics covered include English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, or even study skills. Hours are from 8:00 a.m. to noon. Give it a try. Drop by for an hour or two. We are here for you. Saturday tutoring dates for first semester: September 17, October 1, October 22, November 5, November 19, and December 10.

ONLINE COURSES TAKEN OUTSIDE OF THE DISTRICT New this year : If your son/daughter takes an online

course outside of Gilbert Public Schools he/she will need to take a GPS final and receive a grade of at least 60% to get

credit for the course he/she wants to transfer in, otherwise it will be posted to your child’s transcript as elective credit,

regardless of the subject. Elective classes are the exception and a district final is not required.

Counseling Updates

The counselors recently completed their senior credit check visit. As the counselors did individual meetings with each senior, the seniors were asked to fill out their diploma card, checked over their credit check to make sure all their remaining graduation requirements were somehow planned for, and were given a checklist for what should be accomplished toward post-secondary planning during the first semester of their senior year.

Counselors will be stopping by freshmen English classes in the next couple weeks to introduce the students to counseling office procedures and to think about their 4-year plan.

Students are encouraged to stop by the counseling office during their lunch hour for quick answers to their questions. Appointments can be made for anything that can’t be answered during these “open door” sessions.

Parents, are you aware students have to register with the NCAA before qualifying for any scholarship money to play athletics at the Division 1 and 2 level? If your child is a potential college athlete, they should make an appointment to talk to Mr. Baker about what classes, grades and test scores are needed to be cleared by the NCAA. Students should do this during their junior year- if not earlier. Not all of our classes count for NCAA eligibility.

Students who need information about ACT and SAT testing dates should see Mr. Chick in the career center or look online at www.actstudent.org/start and www.sat.org/register respectively. We recommend juniors take these tests toward the end of the junior year so they will have time to take it again if a higher score is needed.

Students should be listening to the announcements to find out when PSAT sign-ups are for the October test date (the only time it will be offered). Registration will be from September 12th-September 30th in the bookstore. Cost of the test is $20. A limited number of PSAT tests are ordered, so it is a first come, first served basis. This year the test is only offered during our Fall Break. Saturday, October 15

th will be the PSAT test

date. Here are some reasons your child should take the PSAT:

Why Should You Take the PSAT/NMSQT?

1. SAT® Preparation and Skills Feedback The PSAT/NMSQT and the SAT® evaluate the same skills. Taking the PSAT/NMSQT

along with a rigorous high school curriculum is the best preparation for the SAT, a widely recognized college admission test.

2. Enter Scholarship Competitions By taking the PSAT/NMSQT in the 11th grade, you may be eligible for scholarships and other

academic recognition, including programs conducted by National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

3. Access One-Stop College Planning with My College QuickStart™ My College QuickStart includes:

• An interactive score report with answer explanations and your projected SAT score

• A personalized SAT study plan that includes hundreds of free practice questions

• A detailed personality test to help you find majors and careers that fit your talents

and interests

• A list of colleges that can be customized based on your interests

• A report that shows you which AP® courses you might be ready for and which are

related to college majors that interest you

4. Connect with Colleges that are Interested in You Through the Student Search Service®, you can receive free information about

admission and financial aid from colleges, universities and scholarship programs.

Welcome! A few reminders for the new School Year… All medications must be checked into the Health Office. Students are not allowed to carry medication with them at school unless the use of the following medication is required: epi pens, inhalers and diabetic emer-gency medications. However, these items must FIRST be checked in and accompanied by the appropriate form at the Health Office. Medications may only be brought to school by a parent/guardian or another adult over the age of 18. All medication will be in a properly labeled container from either the pharmacy for prescription medication or in the original container for over the counter medication. Make sure to check the expiration date. Narcotic pain medication will not be administered at school. If a medication needs to be administered daily or is a prescription medication, a “Request for School Admin-istration of Medication” form must be completed by both the parent/guardian and doctor before medication may be administered at school. This includes any over the counter medication that indicates it is not to be given to anyone under the age of 18, usually medication containing aspirin (example: Excedrin). This form is available on the GPS website or from the CVHS Health Office. Please contact the Health Office for any questions at 480-545-3100 x 2126.
