Adventure for womenOPOTIKI women will be among a throng of female athletes competing in a multi-sport race in Whakatane on Saturday.
The Whai Ora Spirited Women’s Adventure Race will include more than 1500 competitors, in teams of four, rac-ing in the Whakatane and Ohope areas. Travelling together, teams must navigate around a secret course by foot, mountain-bike and kayak as well as complete a few surprise mystery activities.
This will be the third year the event has been run and it began in Rotorua in 2016 and last year’s race was staged in Taupo. There are short, medium and long course options as well three age-group categories.
The winners of the long course race are expected to finish in between nine and 10 hours. The course will remain a secret until tomorrow night, including the start loca-tion, and teams will be released in starting waves on Saturday morning.
Event spokeswoman Heather Logie said the event had been sold out for some time and they were expecting 380 teams to start.
“With supporters and family, we are expecting over 2000 visitors to the region. There is lots of other stuff happening around the event as well.
“We have a registration expo on Friday, with lots of sponsors coming to town, free yoga sessions and adventure movie screen-ings.
“And then the big awards ceremony will take place on Sunday morning.”
