Regional Student Youth Art Exhibition and Awards
O n Saturday 26th November, Cowra Regional Art Gallery Director Brian
Langer welcomed a large crowd of young people, teachers and parents,
congratulated those young artists who entered the Awards, and thanked the
Awards Judge artist Joanna Logue for officiating. Joanna was the winner of the
Country Energy Award and Central West Regional Artists Award in 2009.
The Director also made mention of the generous support
received from sponsors and award donors including major sponsor Essential Energy.
This exhibition which is now presented annually by the Cowra Regional Art Gallery, is growing from
strength to strength. 141 works from 11 central west high schools, focusing on years 10, 11 and 12, were displayed
in the gallery this year. Awards were made in categories including painting, drawing, 2D digital, ceramics/textiles,
mixed media, photography and sculpture. It was pleasing to have some of the award winners present on the day.
In officially opening the exhibition, Mayor of Cowra Shire Council, Cl Bill West, congratulated the artists,
wished them well for their future, and encouraged them to continue to nurture their talents.
Awards Judge Joanna Logue spoke about the challenge and difficulty in deciding the winners as she had
found something worthwhile in every work she looked at. Joanna gave an interesting critique on each of her
selections as she announced the winners.

REPLANT: a new generation of Botanical Art
T his diverse exhibition was composed of limited edition etchings and photographs featuring the remarkable world of plants found in tropical areas of northern Australia. The six indigenous and non-
indigenous Australian printmakers and a photographer were Winsome Jobling from Darwin, Debra
Wurrkidj from Maningrida, Marita Sambono from Nauiyu, Irene Mungatopi from the Tiwi Islands, Fiona Hall
from Adelaide, Judy Watson from Brisbane and photographer Peter Eve.
The artists focused on the unique native plants that survive and prosper in the climatic extremes
of Australia‟s tropical north, leading to not only an interesting exhibition, but creating an enduring record
for the future. Guest speaker for the Opening was Fiona Sivyer, Manager Nomad Gallery, Canberra.
Students from three schools from the area visited

Rachel Ellis: New Works
B athurst based artist Rachel Ellis, who
won the Central West Regional
Artists Award in 2010, was invited to exhibit a collection of new work at the
Cowra Regional Art Gallery in association
with her win.
The opportunity for such an
exhibition forms part of the prize for the
Award.
In a departure from custom,
guest speaker Richard Perram, Director
Bathurst Regional Art Gallery, officially closed the Exhibition on
Saturday 20 November.
Cowra Regional Art Gallery Director Brian Langer
explained the background to the exhibition, and welcomed all to the Gallery.
Richard Perram said he appreciated being asked to close Rachel‟s show and then went on to tell those
present a little about her.
Rachel was born in Adelaide and has worked hard to provide herself with wide experience and an
impressive art education. Richard believes Rachel is able to reach the essential nature of what she paints,
working slowly and meticulously. He also stated that he believes that Rachel is one of the important artists
working in the landscape today. He feels if she has a fault, it is her apparent search for perfection, never believing
that her work is truly finished.
To add to the occasion for Rachel, her parents who had travelled some distance,
were able to share the closing of the exhibition with her.

TIM WINTERS: ISLAND to ISLAND
P rintmaker and painter Tim Winters is a based in Stuart Town, Central West NSW. In 2008 he
travelled to Sark a tiny island in the English Channel and the remote island Orkney located off the
northern coast of Scotland. During this period he also had an artist-in-residency at the Peacock Visual
Arts studio in Aberdeen, Scotland. This journey of discovery to such unusual and isolated islands has
developed into an ongoing project, exploring ideas of physical and emotional dislocation, contrasted
with his experiences of the vast and open spaces of Australia.
Tim Winters said “The series of works in ISLAND to ISLAND presented at the Cowra
Regional Art Gallery explores the physical nature and philosophical idea of islands and our relationship
to them”. Winter‟s was the recipient of the 2011 Central West Regional Artists Award and this
exhibition is presented in association with the award.
