Although they are a long way from Ark City, Chris and Aimee Freeland have not forgotten how Cowley College helped them on their road to success. The couple, which have three children and currently reside in Greeley, CO., graduated from Ark City High School in 1990. The two began dating not long after high school. Aimee graduated from Cowley College in 1992, while Chris attended Cowley during the 1991-1992 academic year. Chris, the son of former Ark City City Manager Curt Freeland, and hiswife, Cindy, is employed at Aller Lingle Architects in Fort Collins, CO. He began working for the compa-ny after becoming a licensed archi-tect in 2003. His current position entails the drafting of construction drawings for buildings and managing those buildings through construc-tion. Aimee, whose maiden name is Aubert, works for the City of Greeley in the City Manager’s office as part of their Public Information Division. Her job as Marketing and Publicity Coordinator includes assisting the Public Information Officer, City website updates, production of the City newsletter, and includes show production, script writing, teleprompter programming and talent scheduling. In addition, she is a regular on-camera talent as co-host of the City’smonthly Inside Greeley news maga-zine program, something she says shenever would have imagined doing.Their story dates back to their years

at Cowley. Aimee came to Cowley on a Danceline scholarship, where she helped the Tigerette dance team win nationals in their divi-sion. Also during her time at Cowley, Aimee was selected as a home-coming candidate and was named the Overall Outstanding Student of Arkansas City. She worked in

Cowley’s Alumni & Development, and Dean of Students offices as a student assistant. During the summer months, she worked at Cowley mowing grass and plant-ing and maintaining flowers all over campus. She credits her time at Cowley with helping her get to where she is today. “By going to Cowley I was able

to think about what I wanted to pursue in my degree area and gave me the one-on-one time with instructors that I would have never received going to a much larger school,” Aimee said. After Cowley, Aimee transferred to Wichita State University, where she realized what an asset Cowley was to her education. “The low teacher to student ratios certainly helped my grades,”Aimee said. “There were more opportunities to be involved from student activities to being a Student Ambassador; and a chance to mature in myschooling.” After high school, Chris was a Rotary exchange student in Aabenraa, Denmark, prior to coming back for a year at Cowley. After attending Cowley Chris went to school at Kansas State University where he receiveda degree in Architecture in 1997. “My time at KSU was easier because many of my fresh-man requirements were already completed at Cowley,” Chris said.During his time at Kansas State, Chris proposed to Aimee during a trip to Greece at the Temple of Athena, Cape Sunion. The couple was married in Ark City in January 1997. After a honeymoon in Cancun, Mexico, they headed back to Manhattan, Kan. since Chris still had one semester ofArchitecture school remaining. After a short stay in Topeka work-ing for the Kansas Bar Associa-tion, Chris accepted a job offer from Bley Associates Architects in Greeley in 1998. He worked for

Bley Associates Architects until becoming a licensed Architect in 2003. “Initially you are an intern until you work enough hours under a licensed Architect, after which you can start taking exams to become licensed yourself,” Chris said. Aimee’s first job in Greeley included working for Bonnie Dean Associates, a public relations and marketing firm for two years. Afterwards, she worked for five years for Hospice and Palliative Care of North-ern Colorado in various positions from Community Development Assistant to Human Resources Manager. Both Aimee and Chris have fond memories of their time at Cowley, and each consider former Cowley instructor Paul Stirnaman to have been one of their favorite instructors. “There are so many people that made my time at Cowley memorable,” Aimee said. Their children are, Chase 8, Lanie 4, and Bridger 1.

Just happy to be nominated, Bruce Crouse, the department chair of career and technical education at Cowley College, was surprised to learn he was named the Kansas Council on Workforce Education (KWCE) 2007 Award Winner for Excellence in Teach-ing during the KACTE Annual Conference held August 6 in Topeka. Crouse, who was recognized for his work at the Winfield Center for Technical Excellence, was also one of four finalists for the 2007 Community Leadership Award. “It is an honor to be recognized by your pears not once but twice,” Crouse said. “I am pleased to receive these awards, but need to thank the college and members of

Todd Shepherd, instructor/chair of Cowley College’s Social Science Department, became the sixth recipient of the Paul Stirna-man Memorial Award for Teach-ing Excellence.Shepherd received the award during the All-College In-Service held August 9 in the Earle N. Wright Community Room. The award is named for Paul Stir-naman, a long-time Social Science Department instructor and strong supporter of the College Educa-tion Association. He died June 16, 2000, following a lengthy illness.

the CTE department that contin-ually support and encourage me to strive for excellence.” Crouse was recognized for promoting excellence and growth in career and technical education at the postsecondary level. Crouse, who has taught non-destructive testing at Cowley since 1993, has helped the program become highly successful and sought after by business and indus-try in several states. He has helped the program expand to Sumner County, where the Mulvane IT Center was built in 2004, and in 2006 he began working in Winfield on a new career and technical program called Mechatronics. Crouse worked with business and industry, school districts, and community members to make the program a reality.

Crouse was also instrumental in the college receiving a $125,000 Kansas Department of Commerce grant towards equipment purchas-es for the new Center for Techni-cal Excellence in Winfield. Sheree Utash, vice president of academic affairs, is proud of Crouse’s accomplishments and glad to see him recognized on a state level. “Bruce is very deserving of this honor and award for his vision and dedication to ensuring that our college is meeting the needs of business and industry in technical and workforce education,” Utash said. “He continues to raise the bar of excellence for career and technical education while creat-ing avenues to enhance student success and community aware-ness.”

A regular fixture at Cowley College athletic events and actively involved in the adopt-a-player program, Frank Arnold, Cowley College Social Science Department instructor, was named the 2007 Conrad and Janet Jimison Tiger Booster of the Year. “Frank has been a major contribu-tor to our athletic program for student athletes since he has been employed here as a member of the faculty,” Cowley College athletic director Tom Saia said. “The reason we have one of the top athletic programs in the country is because of people like Frank Arnold and our Booster Club.” Arnold, who serves as the associate coordinator for Cowley’s adopt-a-player program, was surprised to receive the honor, which is in its 12th year of existence. “I am tickled to death,” Arnold said. “I am honored to be included in such a good group of fellow winners of the award.” Arnold is in his eighth year teach-ing history and government classes at Cowley. He became involved in Cowley athletics through the adopt-a-player program. “The students appreciate people going to their games and they get to see me in a different light,” Arnold said.Although there were several worthy candidates for the award, Saia felt Arnold was the obvious choice. “I can’t think of a better recipient than Frank Arnold,” Saia said. “He instructs and guides student athletes academically, athletically, and socially.”This represents the 38th year for the Tiger Booster Club, an organization that has raised funds for the purpose of helping sustain the athletic scholarship

Shepherd, who has worked at Cowley since 1999, was honored to receive the award.“This means a lot to me because I know there are a lot of quality instructors here,” Shepherd said. “I want to thank my department as well as my wife and son. I could not do what I do without their support.”Besides serving as department chair, Shepherd also teaches Economics, Algebra, and Astron-omy courses. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Arts degree in economics from the University of Missouri. In 2002, Shepherd received the NISOD Master Teacher Award.

program under the rules of the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference. The Tiger Booster Club has continued to grow in each of Saia’s 12 years at the school.“We are successful in athletics because of the Tiger Booster Club,” Saia said. Arnold, who also serves as the mayor of Newkirk (Okla.), thor-oughly enjoys being at Cowley.“Cowley is a great place to work,” Arnold said.

in the country,” McAtee said. “If students know we have one of the best athletic programs then we are going to attract students from across Kansas, which fills the dorms and keeps the classrooms full. Our athletic programs set us a part from other schools .” Fellow Jayhawk Conference schools Johnson County Commu-nity College and Butler Commu-nity College finished third and fourth, respectively. Points for the Pepsi/NATYCAA Awards are calculated based on each colleges finish at NJCAA Tournaments. Each first place finish is worth 20 points, second place 19, third 18, and so on. Total scores for both men’s and women’s programs are combined for their total score. Top-five schools: (1) Monroe Community College, 179 points; (2) Cowley College, 163.5; (3) Johnson County Commu-nity College, 147.5; (4) Butler Community College, 115.5; (5) South Plains Community College, 114.5.

try Championships, while the women’s cross country team placed fourth at nationals. The Lady Tiger volleyball team placed third at the NJCAA Divi-sion II National Volleyball Tour-nament, while Cowley’s baseball team captured the Region VI title and advanced to play at the Junior College World Series. Cowley’s women’s tennis team had four individual national champions and placed fourth at the NJCAA Women’s Tennis National Tournament, and the Tiger men’s tennis team finished in a tie for seventh at the national tournament. The Lady Tiger softball team also captured its fourth straight Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division title, while the Cowley women’s basketball team won 20 games and finished second in the conference. “This award is a great tribute to our coaches and our athletic department, it recognizes every-thing that we have got here,” Saia said. The only sport that had some what of a down year was men’s basketball as the team finished with a record of 16-15. However, Cowley recently hired coaching legend Steve Eck to guide the basketball program. The basket-ball team expects to compete for conference and region titles.McAtee, who is a huge supporter of Tiger athletics, was happy to see the athletic programs’ success recognized. “It validates that we are one of the outstanding sports programs

With tremendous success in its men and women’s athletic programs, Cowley College placed (National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators) Awards standings, which recogniz-es excellence in two-year college athletics. Monroe College in Rochester, N.Y., finished first and received a trophy along with a $2,500 schol-arship. By placing second, Cowley received a trophy and $1,000 scholarship. “To be top in the conference, region, and second in the nation is unbelievable,” Cowley College athletic director Tom Saia said. “You have to have a president and a Board of Trustees that believe in it. It’s because of Cowley president Dr. Pat McAtee that we are able to compete in all of our athletic programs.” Monroe had three runner-up finishes at NJCAA National Tournaments this season: men’s basketball, ice hockey and women’s swimming and diving. They also finished third in men’s swimming and diving and women’s soccer. Cowley’s women’s track and field team placed third at both the indoor and outdoor national championships, while the Tiger men’s track and field team placed fourth at the indoor national championships and third at the outdoor national championships. The Cowley men’s cross country team won the conference title and placed fifth at the NJCAA Division I National Cross Coun-

Ken Spurgeon, former director of Humani-ties, Social and Behav-ioral Sciences at Cowley College, is serving as the producer/director of the film “Bloody Dawn: The Lawrence Massacre”, which began filming in early June. Spurgeon, who taught history and government, wrote the film along with a colleague. The film tells the story of William Quantrill’s raid on Lawrence, KS on August 21, 1863. It was the climax of the Kansas-Missouri border war during the Civil War and was an aberration even to those used to a violent war and time. On that day in a space of four hours Quantrill and 450 Missouri bushwhack-ers murdered over 180 unarmed men. Many of those murdered had noth-ing to do with the simmer-

ing blood feud but the city of Lawrence was well known as an abolition-ist capital that preached free-state principles and abolition of slavery. “In the film we talk to historians who explain the reason for the hatred and violence and introduce us both to the motiva-tion of Quantrill and his men and the various individuals in Lawrence at the time,” Spurgeon said. “The film is a docudrama using both the traditional documentary approach and the dramatic approach detailing the events with a realistic approach.” Cowley employees that are involved in the film are, Leslie Berryhill, Mark Britton, Andrew Tash, Kathy Sikes, Misty Maynard, Clayton Cren-shaw, Dave Landin, Uwe Conrad, Shane Hilt, Anne Erhart, Angela Fry, Linda Grossman, and Judy

Crenshaw. Cowley students involved are, Nathan Hilt and Anthony Ngicu. The film will be screened in area theaters later this year including a premiere in Wichita at the Orpheum and then will air on PBS around the end/first of the year. Several interesting individuals are involved in the film. Among them Joel Fein, who is an Emmy award winning sound man who has worked on films like Back to the Future, Blade Runner and others and who was nominated for an Oscar in 1979 for the Buddy Holly Story for Best Sound. Fein resides in Wichita and supervises the sound for the film. The narra-tor of the film is Buck Taylor, who was a regular cast member of the long running television show Gunsmoke as well as featured in several west-

erns including Tombstone, Gettysburg and others. The film is paid for in part by a grant from the Kansas Humanities Council, Star Lumber Charitable Trust, Old Cowtown Museum, The James and Beverly Mershon Charitable Fund, Craig and Christy Smith Foundation and the Friends of Lone Chimney Films, Inc. Two Cowley College Phi Beta Lambda Business Organization students brought home awards from their trip to the 65th National Leadership Conference held June 22-26 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Chicago, IL. Caleb DeGraaf, placed fourth in Economic Analysis and Decision Making and Christopher Klingen-berg, placed seventh in Computer Applications. DeGraaf, from Mulvane, graduated as a business administration major and will be attending WSU in the fall. Klin-genberg is a sophomore business administration major from Udall. The competitive events consist-ed of the following: Economic Analysis and Decision Making – consists of an objective test including questions on money and banking, microeconomics, macroeconomics, comparative economic systems, history of economic thought, and inter-national economics. Computer Applications – the student takes a two-hour skills test and a one-hour written objective test illustrating their understanding of basic computer terminology and concepts; document format-ting rules and standards; grammar, punctuation, spelling and proof-reading and related computer applications knowledge. Other Cowley students attend-ing were: Allison Belindo, Megan Pauly, Charley Stettler, Heather Voss, Jerrod Ketchersid, Kayla Strickland, Kristine Thompson, and Brittany Tucker. PBL’s mission is to bring busi-

ness and education together in a positive working relationship through innovative leadership and career development programs. The National PBL Association charters local chapters. Approximately 1,700 students attended the conference, whose theme was “PBL Your Ticket to the Future.” The competition was tough as the students compete against students from four-year colleges and universities as well as community colleges across the United States and the Virgin Islands. To qualify for nationals students had to place first or second at the state conference held in March. In Chicago, besides competing in the specific tests, students had the opportunity to attend leader-ship workshops and participate in the March of Dimes Walk. The walk was a special celebration of PBL’s 33-year partnership with the

March of Dimes. Beverly Grunder, Cowley Advi-sor and the newly elected State PBL Advisor, accompanied the group. “It is exciting to observe the leadership skills and professional growth students obtain by being part of the PBL organization,” Grunder said. “Networking with their peers, attending the dynamic workshops and prepar-ing for the competition provide the students with learning and leadership experience. The skills and knowledge will enhance their future educational and profes-sional experiences. I am proud of the students who represented the Cowley College PBL chapter. It is an honor to serve as their local advisor and also to be appointed as the state advisor.”

Graduation for 13 students in Cowley College’s Mobile Intensive Care Technician (para-medic) program was held July 20 in Cowley’s Earle N. Wright Community Room on the main campus in Arkansas City. The program, which finished in late June, completed the AAS degree requirements for these graduates. The following are the graduating members of the evening class of 2006-07: Binh Chung, Wichita; Sarah Denny, Ponca City; Alison Floyd, Wichita; Paul Hunter, Arkansas City; Ryan Kilby, Winfield; Ben King, Arkansas City; John Lies, Andover; Matt Manning, Wichita; Byron McNary, Wichita; James Mitchell, Wichita; Jenniff-er Reeves, Wichita; and

Pamula Utter, Wichita. The evening began when Slade Griffiths, Allied Health Department Chair, issued the welcome and discussed the education the graduates received while in Cowley’s program. Griffiths discussed that this was the eleventh MICT program taught at the college though it was the first longer evening class provided at Cowley. “Like the past daytime programs, we all became close like a family – many of us may have even expe-rienced some separation anxiety when it was over,” said Griffiths. He also praised all of the people involved with the program and singled out Chris Cannon, Lead MICT Instructor, for his outstand-ing performance and leadership. Dr. Roy Danks,

Cowley Associate Medical Advisor then spoke to the graduates. Dr. Patrick McAtee, Cowley President, and Cannon conferred the certificates and presented the class of 2006-07 to the gathering of about 150 people who came to honor the graduates. McAtee thanked the graduates for selecting EMS as a career and for choosing Cowley College for their education. “We are all very thankful and proud of every one of you,” said McAtee.Following tradition, the graduates purchased a gift for the school – an ambulance. They found a very new ambulance that had significant front-end damage and were able to remove the box and place it on a trailer. Cannon thanked the

graduates and said, “Other students will benefit from your gift and we greatly appreciate this.” During the course of their schooling, the graduates assessed 5,000 patients and administered over 3,000 medications during the year. With this eleventh graduating class, Cowley MICT graduates now treat approximately 80,000 patients each year. The national job outlook continues to be greater than average, and the local job outlook looks promis-ing. All graduates have found employment in the EMS field. Cowley currently has a daytime MICT program in Winfield and will start both day and evening programs in January 2008.

Following on the heels of his first book “Oceans of Kansas”, Cowley College adjunct instruc-tor Mike Everhart recently had his second book published, titled “Sea Monsters”.“Through this book, my first book (Oceans of Kansas) and my web site (www.oceansofkansas.com), I am sharing my interest in these amazing animals and their times, and hope-fully educating the public in regard to this fascinating period millions of years ago when Kansas was under a great inland sea,” Everhart said. The book details a time when marine reptiles dominated the oceans for millions of years. Their remains are found all over the world, from the Arctic (Alaska, Greenland, Norway) to the Antarctic. The book also tales about the histori-cal discoveries of these creatures in Kansas, starting in 1867 when Elasmosaurus was found near Fort Wallace in western Kansas. Thanks to the University of Kansas’ Multicul-tural Scholars Program being awarded a three-year, $515,157 U.S. Department of Education FIPSE (Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education) grant, KU was able to expand the MSP to three Kansas community colleges in 2007. Cowley was one of the three community colleges asked to be part of this grant through KU. Cowley was chosen along with Kansas City Commu-nity College and Donnelly College in Kansas City. The program is designed to develop a new genera-tion of leaders, while helping prepare the students for college and keep them on track during the school year. The program also addresses academic, social, and personal aspects of the student experience and will help them maximize the benefits of their undergradu-ate years. There are six students in Cowley’s Multicultural Scholars Program. Each participant in the program had to go through an application and interview process. They then signed a contract agreeing to keep up their grade point average and participation in class. Marlys Cervantes and Amy McWhirt serve as co-directors of the program and meet with the students individually and as a group, once a month. The annual Blitz Drive has continued to raise more money in each of the 13 years that Saia has served as Cowley’s director of athletics. “This is a credit to our athletic programs and the coaches,” Saia said. “This was highly unexpected as far as the money we were able to raise this year. We greatly exceeded our expectations.” The Tiger Booster Club has six levels of membership that range from $100 to $2,500. TBC members are admitted free to all Tiger sporting events.Anyone interested in becoming a Tiger Booster Club member can contact the Cowley Athletic Department at 441-5589.
