Covid19 Summary for Wayne County: June 20-27, 2020
Summary: Public health surveillance data indicate Corona Virus Disease 2019 (Covid19) activity in Wayne County started to increase. The number of new cases increased from the previous week and three new hospitalizations were reported in the last 10 days. Twenty-three new cases were reported to the health department during the week which brings the total to 347 cases. Most of the cases are female (57%) and age 40 or older (73%). Seventeen zip codes in the county have one or more cases with approximately one-half of the cases residing in the 44691 zip code. The number of hospitalized cases increased to 45. Most of the hospitalized cases are male (53%) and 50-79 years of age (69%). The number of Covid19 deaths reported to the Wayne County Health Department remains at 52. Most of the deaths are adults age 70 or older (80%) and one-half are female.

different than the state average which is slightly higher among males.

Among Wayne County residents, the highest percentages of reported cases are among adults ages 40-69 and 80 or older. The
percentages of cases in these age groups are higher than the state average. The percentage of cases among age groups 39 and
younger among Wayne County residents is lower than the state average.

Covid19 Cases by Race and Ethnicity:
The highest number of reported cases have been identified as white, non-Hispanic (286). Nine cases have been identified as
Hispanic and 2 cases have been identified as Black. Case rates are 44% higher among Hispanics (391 per 100,000) compared to
white, non-Hispanics (270 per 100,000) and blacks (117 per 100,000) (data not shown).

The highest number of reported cases reside in the 44691 zip code (154) followed by residents of the 44606 (38 cases) and 44618
(22 cases) zip codes (map below). The highest case rates were found among residents of the 44606 (576 per 100,000), 44691 (368

Covid19 Hospitalizations by Age Group:
Among Wayne County residents, the highest percentage of hospitalized cases have occurred among adults age 70-79 (31%),
followed by ages 60-69 (22%) and 50-59 (16%). The highest percentage of hospitalized cases in Ohio have occurred among those 60-
60 (22%), 70-79 (19%), and 80+ (19%).

Covid19 Hospitalizations by Race and Ethnicity:
Of the 45 hospitalized cases, 41 have been identified as white, non-Hispanic. One hospitalized case has been identified as Hispanic
and 0 hospitalized cases have been identified as Black. Hospitalization rates are 13% higher among Hispanics (43 per 100,000)
compared to white, non-Hispanics (38 per 100,000) (data not shown).

Data Sources:
1. Ohio Disease Reporting System (ODRS): Information on cases of communicable diseases reportable under Ohio Revised Code are housed and maintained by the Ohio Disease Reporting System (ODRS). Corona Virus Disease 2019 (Covid19) is a reportable condition under Ohio Revised Code. Health Care Providers are required to immediately notify their local public health department of Covid19 cases for follow-up. Cases with a classification status of confirmed or probable are included in this report. Confirmed cases are defined as patients that receive a positive laboratory test performed for Covid19. Probable cases must meet clinical criteria and epidemiologic evidence without confirmatory laboratory testing OR meet presumptive laboratory evidence and either clinical criteria or epidemiologic evidence.
2. Office of Vital Statistics: The Wayne County Health Department Office of Vital Statistics receives reports on the causes of death that occur within the county. Covid19 deaths were included in this report if they were listed as the immediate or underlying cause of death on the death certificate.
