LEARNING SUPPORT GRANT

▸Due to school closures and a transition to online learning, students are far more likely to experience learning loss that leaves them less prepared for success in college

▸ In partnership with the Indiana GEAR UP program, CHE solicited applications for the Summer 2020 Covid-19 Learning Support Grant

▸ College/university and community partners were encouraged to apply for grants of up to $100,000 to connect and fund programs that support the high school graduating class of 2020 as they transition into college

▸Application closed on June 5—recipients will be announced soon.

▸ Colleges and universities must use certain types of financial aid before using state financial aid. This is known as the “order of aid application”.

▸ The Commission provided guidance to institutions to exclude COVID-19 emergency aid from this order of aid application.

▸ Includes both institutional emergency aid funds as well as emergency aid funded and/or permitted by the CARES Act.

▸ Effective for Spring 2020, Summer 2020, and Fall 2020 academic terms.

▸ 6.65% plan to move directly to work

▸ 3.05% stated a plan other than that listed above

▸Nearly 13% of respondents (~1900 students) are either going directly to work or are unsure of their next step—could benefit greatly from our training offerings and support

▸Of the 3.05% who said “other”, many actually mentioned some sort of training program (cosmetology school, attending college out-of-country, etc.)

▸More analysis and follow-up needed from those who said they were “Unsure:”

▸ “Accepted to several colleges but if my family needs me to stay will not go to college to help financially because Covid-19 has hurt the income of my single parent household.”

▸ “Due to covid-19 I plan on taking a gap year to save up some more money and then I plan on attending a college out of state.”
