INFORMATION FOR AUTHORS

Manuscripts

Manuscripts containing original materials are accepted for consideration on the understanding that neither the article nor any part of its essen-tial substance, tables, or figures has been or will be published or submitted for publication else-where before appearing in the Journal. This restriction does not apply to abstracts or press reports published in connection with scientific meetings. Copies of any closely related manu-scripts should be submitted to the Editor together with the manuscript that is to be consid-ered by the Journal. The submission of more than one article dealing with related aspects of the same study is discouraged.

The original manuscript with one set of origi-nal figures and four copies of the complete manuscript should be submitted. Only one copy will be returned to authors. Manuscripts must be no longer than 3000 words.

Please supply an approximate word count

(excluding abstract and references). Use stan-dard-sized paper, and triple-spacing throughout. All submissions should be addressed to the Editor-in-chief, Editorial Office of Kinki Uni-versity Medical Association, Kinki University School of Medicine, 377-2 Ohnohigashi, Osa-kasayama 589-8511, Japan (Tel. : 0723-66-0221, ext, 3218, FAX.: 0723-66-8810), by the author

personally and should be sent by registered mail. A covering letter signed by all authors should identify the person (with address and telephone number) responsible for any questions or negoti-ations regarding the manuscript ; this letter should make it clear that the finally submitted manuscript has been seen and proved by all authors, and that they have taken due care to ensure the integrity of their work. At least one

person's name must accompany any group names (e.g., "Thelma J. Smith, for the Kawachi Por-phyria Group").

Acknowledgments will be limited to a column of Journal space, and those acknowledged will be listed only once.

Letters to the Editor

Letters to the Editor should offer short, deci-

sive observations of interest based on published data. They should not be preliminary observa-tions that may need a later paper for validation.

Conflicts of Interest

Authors of research articles should disclose at the time of submission any financial arrange-ments they may have with any company whose

product figures prominently in the submitted manuscript or with any company making a competing product. Such information will be held in confidence while the paper is under review and will not influence the editorial deci-sion. However, if the article is subsequently accepted for publication, the editors will usually discuss with the authors the manner in which such information is to be communicated to the reader.

Since the essence of reviews and editorials is informed selection and interpretation of the liter-ature, the Journal expects that authors of such articles will not have any financial interest in any company (or any of its competitors), making a product discussed in the article.

Announcements

Announcements of scientific meetings, confer-ences and other events that are of interest to the readership of Acta Medica Kinki University

(Acta Med Kinki Univ) should be sent to the Editor at least 4 months prior to the intended data of publication.

Review Articles

Review atticles on topics of broad interest are strongly desired and may be solicited by the Editor-in-Chief. Individuals who wish to pre-

pare review articles should correspond directly with the Editor-in-Chief regarding the appro-

priateness of the proposed topic. Such articles are expected to be thorough, detailed, and should include appropriate references to the literature. The addition of tables and figures to summarize critical points is encouraged. These articles are themselves reviewed by the Editors

and other expert reviewers before a final decision

on publication is made, and revisions may be

required.

Titles and Authors' Names

With each manuscript, provide a title page

giving the following : the title of the paper (titles should be concise and descriptive, not declara-tive) ; a running head of fewer than 40 letter

spaces ; the name(s) of the author(s), including first name(s) in full ; the name of the department and/or institution in which the work was done ; the institutional affiliation of each author ; and the name and address of the author to whom reprint requests should be addressed.

Abstracts

Provide on a separate page an abstract of not

more than 250 words. This abstract should

consist of four paragraphs, entitled Background,

Methods, Results, and Conclusions. The text

should thus briefly describe, respectively, the

problem being addressed in the study, how the study was performed, the salient results, and

what the authors conclude from the results.

Key Words

Three to 10 key words or short phrases should be added to the bottom of the abstract page. Employ terms from the Medical Subject Head-ings of Index Medicus.

References

List double-spaced references in numerical order at the end of the article according to their order of citation in the text. Include all authors' names, full article titles, and full publication details, or the most complete information avail-able for articles "in press". If more than five authors, include the first author followed by et al. Abbreviate the names of journals according to the scheme used in the latest edition of Index Medicus (Superintendent of Documents, US Government Printing Office, Washington, DC 20402 U.S.A.). References to abstracts and let-ters must be appropriately identified Personal communications, unpublished observations, and manuscripts submitted and "in preparation" must appear parenthetically in the text. Written

permission must be submitted

personal communications.

Footnotes and Abbreviations

Footnotes should appear at the bottom of

their respective pages. Abbreviations should be

defined at their first use and applied consistently

throughout the article. Do not employ non-

standard abbreviations or abbreviate term

appearing fewer than three times. Give the

chemical name of a compound after the first use

of the trivial name ; the trivial name may then

follow throughout the article. Abbreviate units

of measure only when used with numbers.

Tables

Each table should be printed or typed on a

separate page. Tables should be appropriately

numbered, using Arabic numerals and cited in

numerical order in the text. Legends providing

sufficient explanation to make the date intelli-

gible without reference to the text must be typed on the same page.

Figures and Figure Legends

Figures must be cited in the text in numerical

order using Arabic numerals. For photographs,

submit three complete sets of clear, glossy, black-

and-white prints. For line drawings, either a

single set of photographs with three sets of

copies, or three sets of high-quality laser figures

are acceptable. Do not write on either the front

or back of any photographs. Do not mount the

figures, fasten them with paper-clips, or store

them in clasp envelopes where the clasp can

cause damage in transit The name of the first

author, the figure number, and designated top of

the figure should be typed on a label affixed to

the back of each figure. Figure legends should

be typed double-spaced on a separate sheet, and

should include a brief title and concise explana-

tion for each figure, as appropriate. The cost of

publising color photographs will be borne by the authors.

Submission on Computer Disk

Authors of accepted and revised manuscripts

are required to submit the final version of their

paper on disk for typesetting. Please do not forget to sign and indicate the following on the

form : the file name, operating system, and word

processing software with version. Two hard-copy versions of the manuscript that match the

disk exactly are always required.

Proofreading

Authors of accepted manuscripts will

galley proofs directly from the publisher.

Reprints

receive

Reprints must be ordered in advance. An

order form indicating the cost of reprints will be

sent directly from the publisher with the galleys

proofs. Reprints orders, payments, and enquiries should be directed to the Editorial Office.

Ethical Approval

Human experiments : Intended studies on human subjects can proceed only after the inves-tigations have obtained the voluntary consent of the subjects. A full explanation of the experi-ments must be made to the subjects before their consent is requested. Authors should draw attention to the Code of Ethics of the World Medical Association (Declaration of Helsinki, 1964, and Declaration of Tokyo, 1975). Approval in writing is also required for the

performance of such experiments from the Chair-man or the Ethics Committee of the relevant University, Research Institute or Hospital.

Animal experiments : Animal experiments must be performed so as to cause the least pos-sible pain or discomfort to the animals. Accord-ingly, any anesthetic procedures employed must be described in detail including measures taken to maintain a satisfactory level of pain avoidance both during and after the experimental proce-dures. Muscle relaxants and paralytic agents are not of themselves anesthetics, and they should always be used in combination with drugs that are known to produce adequate analgesia.

Experimental animals must be maintained according to recognized standards designed to safeguard their welfare. This includes proper housing and food, as well as appropriate sanitary conditions. In this connection, investigators must be aware of the legal requirements for animal husbandry. They are also obliged to follow the Guiding Principles for the Care and Use of Animals.

Papers submitted to the Journal which fail to

provide satisfactory evidence of having followed the above requirements will be rejected after consideration by the Editorial Board of the Journal.
