of wrenches over the door. Behind and to the right of the building is the lot, lined with rows of stacked cars and clean gravel. “I started small,” says Don Charlton, Pro Auto’s owner and, when company was founded in 1990, its sole em-ployee. “I worked my way up to way we have now.”

Today, Pro Auto Recycling has 26 employees and two yards—seven acres in Abbotsford and four and a half acres in Surrey, BC. The new facility is 35,000 sq. ft., complete with 18,000 sq. ft. for warehousing and a 6000 sq. ft. dismantle shop. The site’s built to industry environmental best practices, practices Charlton helped establish.

Charlton—who served as chair of the Automotive Recyclers of Canada (ARC) for a decade—grew up in the auto industry, beginning with his father’s collision repair shop. He did a four-year auto parts apprenticeship and worked as a mechanic for a few years before taking a temporary job with an auto re-cycler. He took a liking to the used parts business and ended up staying in it for the next five years. Finally, in 1990, he mortgaged his house to start his first recycling yard in Aldergrove, BC.

“The first yard was horrible. There was no running water. We had no equipment to move a car. The yard was mud—when it rained it was just mud out there. … It was pretty humble beginnings. But we made enough money there, mostly installing engines.”

By 1992, the company had made enough to put a down payment on the white house in Abbotsford and over the 15 years or so continued to grow the business

Charlton a grandi dans l'industrie automobile, à commencer par un atelier de réparation de son père collision. à l'installation de moteurs."En 1992, la compagnie avait fait assez pour mettre un

acompte sur la maison blanche à Abbotsford et au cours des 15 ans ou si continué à faire croître l'entreprise jusqu'à ce qu'ils aient trois sites: Auto Recyclers, Pro Truck and Van recycleurs d'Abbotsford et de Pro Auto les recycleurs dans le Surrey.

Pour tous ses succès, la réputation qui est venu avec l'industrie toujours ennuyé Charlton. "Pour autant que les pratiques environnementales aller, l'image que cette in-dustrie avait, c'était que nous étions juste sale, malpropre et qu'il était indésirable», dit-il, dont aucun ne correspond à l'homme bien habillé avec une forte conscience sociale. "Je veux dire que nous sommes les recycleurs d'origine parce que c'est les voitures. Et nous avons le recyclage des voitures pendant des décennies. "

Sur le plan vert, Charlton un pionnier légitime. Abbots-ford a été un bon endroit pour améliorer l'image de l'industrie. Nappe phréatique de la ville est particulière-ment élevé, ce qui oblige la ville à prendre les problèmes de contamination du sol très sérieusement de maintenir son approvisionnement en eau propre.

Travail sur l’Automotive Recyclers of Canada conseil, Charlton aidé à élaborer le Auto Recyclers Code de pra-tique environnementale en 2000, dont les opérations doivent se conformer à faire des affaires, à Abbotsford. En cela, Abbotsford a été très en avance sur la courbe. En 2007, la Colombie-Britannique a adopté le code de la province gamme pour les recycleurs d’automobiles et il ya un mouvement en cours pour adopter une réglementation similaire dans d’autres provinces.

Il a fallu environ six mois pour obtenir totalement déplacé dans de l’emplacement actuel Pro Auto’s, la con-solidation de l’Auto Import et Pro Truck et les chantiers de Van dans l’emplacement central et obtenir Kinks différents d’élaboration. Ils ont développé un carnet de commandes de véhicules qu’ils travaillent actuellement à travers, mais les nouvelles installations a doublé leur capacité à les traiter. until they had three sites: Import Auto Recyclers and Pro Truck and Van Recyclers in Abbotsford and Pro Auto Recyclers in Surrey.

For all his success, the reputation that came with the industry still bothered Charlton. “As far as environmental practices go, the image that this in-dustry had was that we were just dirty, messy and that it was junk,” he says, none of which matches the man—well dressed with a strong social conscious. “I mean we’re the original recyclers because it’s cars. And we’ve been recycling cars for decades.”

On the green front, Charlton’s a legitimate pion-eer. Abbotsford was a good location to improve the industry’s image. The town’s water table is particu-larly high, which forces the town to take issues of ground contamination quite seriously to avoid pol-luting the water supply.

Working on ARC’s board, Charlton helped develop the Auto Recyclers Environmental Code of Practice in 2000, which operations have to comply with to get a business license in Abbotsford. BC adopted the code province–wide seven years later and there’s an ongoing movement to adopt similar regulations in other provinces. In this area, Abbotsford was way ahead of the curve.

It took about six months to get completely moved in to Pro Auto’s new Abbotsford building. They con-solidated consolidating the Import Auto and Pro Truck and Van yards in the central location and, by doing so, doubled their capacity to process vehicles. By September, they’ll be in position to increase their buying and “start using the building for what it was built for,” as Charlton puts it.

The only major reminder of life as it was at Pro Auto Abbotsford is the soon-to-be-destroyed adminlot.

“It’s almost surreal looking at that and won-dering: we did business in that thing for so long?” Charlton says. “I tell everyone I know how the Jef-fersons felt.” He’s movin’ on up.
