INTRODUCING VISIT MALAYSIA YEAR 2014 MASCOT: THE PROBOSCIS MONKEYThey have huge noses that garner attention. They also have big bellies and live in groups. They are not your ordinary tree swinging monkeys. They don’t eat ripe bananas. And they have webbed feet and swim incredibly! Yes, we are talking about the proboscis monkey, a rare and endangered animal found primarily in Borneo and predominantly in Sabah. As Malaysia prepares for the hosting of its grandest tourism celebration - Visit Malaysia Year (VMY) in 2014, the country’s commitment to the protection of its ecological treasures and in particular, the conservation of its many indigenous animals provide a platform of opportunity to share with the world its many fascinating creatures that are so often hidden from the general public.

Given also Malaysia’s regional prominence as the guardian of some of Asia’s rarest and most endangered species, the selection of such an animal mascot to symbolically represent the VMY 2014 campaign weighs of utmost importance. For this, the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, Malaysia has decided upon one of the most endangered of animals listed in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)’s Red List of Threatened Species - the Proboscis Monkey as the official mascot for Visit Malaysia Year 2014. A native to the heartland of Borneo (East Malaysia), this very distinctive species of mammal has some of the most unique qualities that set its biological and physical features apart from other primates.

HISTORY OF VISIT MALAYSIA YEARVisit Malaysia Year (VMY) was first launched in 1990 with the theme “Fascinating Malaysia. Year of Festivals”. The campaign was a huge success with Malaysia charting 7.4 million in tourist arrivals compared to 4.8 million in 1989. To enable tourists to easily recognize Malaysia, the “Orang Utan, the endangered species found in East Malaysia was used as a mascot and it was named “Wira”. Apart from it, Kuala Lumpur’s famous landmark, Sultan Abdul Samad building was featured as the official Visit Malaysia Year 1990 logo. Malaysia Independence Day in August 31 was the anchor for 84 major events, 14 festivals and nine exhibitions during VMY 1990. Who could ever forget the song “To know Malaysia is to love Malaysia” during VMY 1990?

The success of VMY 1990 has spurred another VMY in 1994. This time around, the theme was “Fascinating Malaysia. Naturally More”. VMY 1994 maintained its words “Fascinating Malaysia” for the theme but injected a punch line “Naturally More” to reflect more exciting things and events lined up for that year. “Orang Utan” was once again used as the mascot.

The third VMY was launched in 2007 in conjunction with Malaysia’s 50th Independence Anniversary. Hence, the theme “Celebrating 50 years of Nationhood” was most befitting to reflect this important anniversary celebration. Efforts were also intensified in all advertising and promotional activities, including the call for action “The time is now. The place is Malaysia” together with its successful and impactful slogan “Malaysia Truly Asia. In line with the 50th Independence Anniversary, over 200 events across the country with 50 major events were held to showcase Malaysia’s wealth of tourism attractions. All in all, VMY 2007 charted a tremendous success beyond expectations with 20.97 million in tourist arrivals and RM46.1 billion in tourist receipts. This means a rise of 3.42 million and RM9.8 billion from the previous year. In 2014, Malaysia will celebrate its fourth Visit Malaysia Year with the theme “Celebrating 1Malaysia Truly Asia” to reflect the diversity in unity of all Malaysians. The Proboscis Monkey has been chosen as the mascot while the promotional campaign has started in 2013 with a series of year-long special events and activities leading to VMY 2014. This time around, VMY 2014 will be the biggest and grandest ever tourism celebration with hundreds of events and festivals all lined up to welcome the world. Overall, it is hoped that VMY 2014 will contribute to the Government’s target to receive 36 million tourist arrivals and RM168 billion in receipts by 2020, as outlined in the Malaysia Tourism Transformation Plan (MTTP) 2020.

TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN PARK

Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park comprises a group of 5 islands located between 3 to 8 km off Kota Kinabalu. The park is spread over 4,929 hectares, two thirds of which cover the sea. Before the Ice age, it formed part of the Crocker Range mass of sandstone and sedimentary rock on the mainland. However, about one million years ago, the melting ice brought about changes in the sea level and parts of the mainland were cut off by the sea to form the islands of Pulau Gaya, Pulau Sapi,Pulau Manukan, Pulau Mamutik dan Pulau Sulug. Evidence of this can be seen from the exposed sandstone of the coastline forming the cliffs, caves, honeycombs and deep crevices. The park was named after Tunku Abdul Rahman, Malaysia's first Prime Minister.

INTRODUCTION

Krabi is a town on the west coast of southern Thailand at the mouth of the Krabi River where it empties in Phangnga Bay. As of 2005 the town has a population of 24,986. The town is the capital of Krabi Province and Krabi district.

Tourism is an important industry. Krabi is a southern province on Thailand's Andaman seaboard with perhaps the country's oldest history of continued settlement. After dating stone tools, ancient colored pictures, beads, pottery and skeletal remains found in the province's many cliffs and caves, it is thought that Krabi has been home to Homo Sapiens since the period 25,000 - 35,000 B.C. In recorded times it was called the 'Ban Thai Samor', and was one of twelve towns that used, before people were widely literate, the monkey for their standard. At that time, c. 1200 A.D., Krabi was tributary to the Kingdom of Ligor, a city on the Kra Peninsula's east coast better known today as Nakhon Si Thammarat.

TOURISM

Much of the province has been the seat of several national parks. The topmost destinations are Hat Noppharat Thara, Ao Nang, Railay, Ko Phi Phi National Park. Yet over 80 smaller islands such as Lanta islands, or Koh Lanta, Phi Phi islands - made famous as the ideal location for adventurers, yachtsmen, scuba-divers, snorkelers and day-trippers from Phuket.

The Ko Lanta National Park, also in Krabi province, includes several coral-fringed islands with well-known diving sites. The largest island, Ko Lanta Yai, is the site of park headquarters, and is also home to Chao Le, or sea gypsies who sustain themselves largely through fishing. The islands are best visited during the non-monsoon months of October through April.Kayaking, sailing, birdwatching, snorkeling are also among top activities. In the interior, two predominantly mainland national parks, Khao Phanom Bencha and Than Bokk-horani, offer inland scenic attractions including waterfalls and caves, and opportunities for trekking, birdwatching and eco-tours.The rock faces at Railay Beach near Aonang have attracted climbers from all over the world and each year are the venue for the Rock and Fire Festival. There are several Rock Climbing schools at Railay beach.

PLACES OF INTERESTTHE JAMES BOND ISLAND

Khao Phing Kan or Ko Khao Phing is a pair of islands on the west coast of Thailand, in the Phang Nga Bay, Strait of Malacca. About 40 metres (130 ft) from its shores lies a 20 metres (66 ft) tall islet Ko Tapu or Khao Tapu. The island is a part of the Ao Phang Nga National Park. Since 1974, when it was featured in the James Bond movie The Man with the Golden Gun, it is popularly called James Bond Island.

Before 1974, the island was a rarely visited indigenous area. However, it was chosen as one of the locations for the 1974 James Bond movie The Man with the Golden Gun as the hideout for Bond's antagonist, Francisco Scaramanga. After the movie release it turned into a popular tourist destination that has gradually contaminated Khao Phing Kan with household litter. In 1981, the island became the most famous part of the newly established Ao Phang Nga Marine National Park. Since 1998, it is forbidden for tourist boats to approach Ko Tapu. This measure aims to stop erosion of the limestone rocks on and near the islet that might eventually result in its collapse.

TIGER CAVE TEMPLE

The Tiger Cave Temple is a Buddhist temple located northeast of Krabi, Thailand. One of the most sacred Buddhist sites in the province, it is well known for the tiger paw prints in the cave, tall Buddha statues and the strenuous flight of stairs to reach the summit. At the top of the mountain there is a huge golden Buddha statue that stands at 278 meters tall. The Buddha statue is visible from the bottom of the mountain before climbing the stairs along with other buildings. The temple has two short stairways that then merges leading to one single stairway leading to the summit, amassing to a total number of 1272 small steps. Another set of stairways lead to a second limestone cave. Summit to the temple.

RAILAY BEACH

Railay is a small peninsula located between the city of Krabi and Ao Nang in Thailand. Accessible only by boat due to the high limestone cliffs cutting off mainland access. These cliffs attract rock climbers from all over the world, but the area is also popular due to its beautiful beaches and quiet relaxing atmosphere. Accommodation ranges from inexpensive bungalows popular with backpackers and climbers, to the renowned jet-set resort of Rayavadee. The four main areas of Railay consist of Pranang, West Railay, East Railay and Tonsai, with Tonsai catering more to climbers. Railay beach was not severely affected by the tsunami of December 26, 2004.

TRAVEL SHOWCASEPLACES OF INTEREST (Cont’d)

KHAO PHA KHOM, Rocky Windows and Secret Lagoon in the Sea

The wondrous stone cliff of the Laem Sak limestone hills lies hidden not far away from Laem Sak Pier, around Chong Lad Tai, straddling up to 100 meters, with stalactites forming a curtain, as amazing windows through which on has to stoop down, as the origin of the name Khao Pha Khom. Behind the cliff is a large lagoon, which is filled with emerald green water every 3rd day to the 6th day of the waning and the waxing moon.

This wondrous rocky cliff has long been hidden away from visitors, although it lies not far from Laemsak Boat Landing at Chong Lad Tai area, It is a cliff of the Laemsak limestone hill, about 100 meters in length, Climbing up the stairs, one has to stoop ant walk under the cliff, thus the name of Khao Pha Khom - the Cliff of Stooping Walk Throughout the cliff, there are stalactites forming flowing curtain, making up rocky windows through which a lookout to the high sea and the faraway Karos Mountains can be made.

How to get there: From Laemsak Boat Landing., use the long-tailed boat for a trip of about 20 minutes

Best time to visit: All year round, but the best period is from November to May

Best period of the day: Morning at sunrise from 6.00 to 7.00 hrs. while the tour of the lagoon should be suring high tide, the 3rd to the 6th day of the waxing or the waning moon, when the tide is at its peak during daytime.

KLONG THA POM

Klong Tha Pom (Tha Pom Canal) is a beautiful area to visit. Five kilometers in length, it is unique for its outstandingly clear emerald-green waters and its location on the tideline. The canal water is alternatively fresh or brackish depending upon the state of the tides. This has resulted in the development of three different forest systems in a very concentrated area. Only 100 metres from the car park you will find the amazingly clear waters which allow sight of this underwater world. The fresh water is high in dissolved limestone which inhibits the formation of precipitates so that the water truly sparkles in the sunlight, as it flows between the mangrove-lined banks.

The canal is a fascinating microcosm of Thailand’s forest areas. Visitors will first encounter the mangrove wetlands with their characteristic tortuous tangle of surface roots but this gives way to the rarely found fresh water swamp forest with small trees and sparse vegetation. This in turn yields to typical rain forest with lush tree growths and shaded paths.

Opening Hours: Daily from 08.30 am. - 02.30 pm.
