Write a letter to the editor of the newspaper expressing your opinion about the local authority’s deci-sion. Say what you think the true cause of the problem is. Give examples to support your opinion.
Writing PreparationWriting a Letter
Choose the correct word to complete the model letter below.
Daily NewsThe local tourist authority announced yesterday that it is going to ban water sports on allbeaches in the surrounding area this year. This decision follows the accident that occurredlast year between two sixteen-year-old jet skiers, which resulted in serious injuries. Manylocal residents have reacted angrily to this move saying that not only is it too extreme butit will also negatively affect tourism to the area and, as a consequence, their livelihoods.
Dear Editor,
As a regular reader of your newspaper, I would like to express my opinion on the article you publishedconcerning the decision that was made by our local tourist authority.
To be honest, I have to say that I was quite taken [1] aback / backwards when I first read the article. Icouldn’t believe that the tourist authority had actually put a [2] whole / total ban on all water sports. Donot get me wrong, I [3] appreciate / identify the good intentions behind their decision. I mean, no oneshould end up getting hurt or even killed for the sake of a bit of fun. However, I am of the opinion that itwould only take a few simple [4] paces / steps to make the water sports safer and [5] prevent / avoid thesekinds of accidents from happening again. If we did this, we would still be able to attract visitors to thearea.
First of all, those in charge [6] of / for the water sports facilities should be threatened with [7] heavy /bulky fines if they fail to abide [8] with / by the safety regulations. I also believe that local authoritiesshould see that these facilities are [9] distributed / provided with their own special area of the beach. Afterall, many other resorts across the country have done this and with great success too. Also, no one undereighteen should be allowed to hire vehicles such as jet skis, as they do not have the maturity to [10] dealwith / handle them.
In closing, I personally feel that the decision of the local tourist authority was too extreme. By followingstandard safety guidelines, I am certain that we will be able to avoid any accidents in the future. Apart fromthis, tourists will still be attracted to the area, which means that the locals will be able to stay in business.
Yours sincerely,
Julie Edwards

Speaking Preparation for Part 1 & Part 2
When it comes to what to do in our spare time, we all have very different ideas. For some, the word entertainmentbrings to mind images of fun and excitement, whereas for others, it means something of a calmer nature.
A trip to the local funfair can be seen as a great day out, but there again, so can a visit to a museum, especially onethat involves interaction and participation on the part of the visitor.
Music is an extremely popular form of entertainment. Live concerts appeal to many people as do musicals and danceshows. However, a person’s age plays an important role in their choice of musical entertainment. A local jazz club maybe ideal for a group of forty-year-olds, but anyone under the age of twenty would probably be bored to tears.

2 This is a diagram of a children’s playground. The town council has decided to add an extra facility to the playground in order toattract more people. Using structures from exercise 1 and the prompts below, which of the three facilities (sandpit, paddling pool, the dodgems) should be included in the playground. Talk about each facility and then decide which would be the best choice.
● sand in food
● children can get dirty
● only used in summermonths
● need adult supervision

FUNCTIONAL LANGUAGE – Coming to a conclusion
Student 1: So basically, we can't seem to agree on which facility to choose.
Student 2: That’s right. To sum up, I think the dodgems are dangerous and the sandpit is dirty while you think thesandpit won’t attract more people and the paddling pool is seasonal.
Student 1: I respect your opinion, of course. However, the basic question is, which facility will benefit the park more bydrawing in more people?
Student 2: Well, the dodgems, of course, but we seem to be in complete disagreement on the issue of safety. They willdefinitely need adult supervision.
Student 1: I can’t argue with that. So, what we’re saying is that the dodgems will be more beneficial to the park as morefamilies will be interested, however, they should be supervised at all times.
Student 2: Yes, I think we can both agree on that.

What is an informal letter?

Dear Anna,Thanks for your last letter. I’m glad you’ve settled in there. Asyou know, Bella got engaged to Thomas recently, so I’m writingto let you know all about their engagement party. It’s a shame you couldn’t come as you really would haveenjoyed it. Instead of having the party at home, they decided tohire a boat! On board, there was a delicious buffet and, best ofall, a disco had been set up on the deck. Luckily, it was a warmevening, and we danced the night away as the boat travelledslowly along the river.
Guess who turned up! Uncle Vince! He came all the way fromCanada with his new wife, Sally. She is lovely and friendly, withshoulder-length light brown hair and a permanent smile on herface. I really like her. She’s a great laugh. Pete was there too. Doyou remember how much you liked him when we were younger? He’s changed a lot since then though. In fact, I hardly recognisedhim as he’s got a moustache now!Well, that’s all for now.Write back soon with all your news.

1 ................................
As requested, here is the report on the Wild West Theme
Park, which opened recently in this area.
2 ................................
The Wild West Theme Park is situated on the outskirts of
town and is easily accessible by public transport. It is open
every day including Sundays.
3 ................................
This new theme park offers a variety of exciting rides,
including a number of extremely frightening ones which are
as thrilling as any found elsewhere in the country. There
are also a wide variety of places to eat, ranging from fast
food outlets to expensive restaurants serving three-course
meals. As the name suggests, all of the entertainment has
a wild west theme.
4 ................................
The Wild West Theme Park is easily accessible, has a large
car park and is well organised. In addition, the tickets are
relatively inexpensive, especially the family ticket, which
offers admission to the park at a reduced rate.
5 ................................
While there are a number of exciting and new rides, there
is not a great deal on offer for young children, in particular
those under the age of twelve. Furthermore, the queues for
some of the rides are rather long, especially at the weekend.
6 ................................
Although there are a few negative points, in general, the
Wild West Theme Park offers an entertaining day out at a
reasonable price. For this reason it is worth recommending
to visitors to the area.
1 You can easily reach the theme park by bus.....................................................................................................................................................................................

3 Many people recommend this restaurant.....................................................................................................................................................................................
