When you look out at people who have accomplished incredible things there seems to be one common theme that they have in common – they just kept going. Winston Churchill once famously quipped that “success” is the ability to go from failure to failure with the same level of enthusiasm. Truly, the secret formula to success is stamina. Many people are born with varied and many gifts. I have met people with razor sharp intelligence, others with fame and

fortune. I have come across others with an uncanny ability never to forget facts, figures or faces, and others yet who have been able to overcome adversity and raise themselves over and above great challenges. Moses, the hero of the Torah features prominently in our readings over the summer. He was beset with challenge, opposition, even an outright attempt to overthrow him - yet he never gave up! There are many reasons offered to explain Moses’ greatness, yet surely one simple explanation given is that he got up each morning and carried on his mission, day after day, year after year. For forty years this same pattern continued as he ‘carried’ the people through the desert. Yes there were times he complained, and yes, in one of his darkest moments he even asks God that his life be over. He knew his moments of despair and yet even then, in his darkest moments, he never gave up. Our lives are built on the foundation that if we are able to put work and determination into the areas of our lives that are most important: in our businesses, in our friendships, in our marriages and in our parenting, then our efforts will be rewarded. After winning the famous battle at the city of Waterloo, the Duke of Wellington remarked that his soldiers were not braver than the soldiers of Napoleon’s, however, they were braver just five minutes longer. Sometimes, stamina to see things through to the end is what allows us to get there. Wishing you a productive and blessed summer. Rabbi Fishman

“Co-Operaction”

For those of you who read my last Hatikvah article, I talked about “Participaction”, a term made up years ago by the Federal Government for healthy exercise. However my take on the word for us at CBTASNH, is “participate and you will see action”. It is almost as healthy!! So I thought that I would continue this article in the

same vein, by using the word, “Co-Operaction”. When we all cooperate we see BETTER action. Being part of a 700 plus family orthodox congregation, one of the largest in Canada, without co-operation, we would see very little action. Let’s look at a few examples from the work of our very many hard working volunteers, whose names are now proudly displayed on a large board in our Synagogue lobby. My first example is our incredible choir made up of professional sounding volunteers. Here is a perfect example of “Co-Operaction”. Everything you hear is so precise and harmonious, each voice important in order to create the beautiful collective melodies. They practice long hours so we can enjoy our experience, as do so many others in our synagogue who have created special and successful programs for all of us this year. This leads me to your new Board of Directors, who over the next twelve months will help shape the future of Congregation Beth Tikvah Ahavat Shalom Nusach Hoari. These select few have stepped up to the plate in leadership roles and will be working tirelessly making critical decisions along with our professional staff and our esteemed Rabbi. They will be working with volunteer committees planning events, helping to maintain and create programs while inspiring us all. They will also assist in our so needed fundraising efforts, all in order to make our institution a stronger more meaningful place for all of our needs. So I hope you understand the meaning of “Co-Operaction”. It can’t happen by itself. It needs people and the co-operation of each of us involved to make all of our actions work to their best capacity. It is not all that simple or easy, and it requires sincere effort and true heart, but through great and consistent team work, we will all enjoy and benefit from a reliable Jewish future for us, our children and our children’s children. On behalf of my wife Linda, your Past President, and our family, we wish you a wonderful safe summer and look forward to seeing all of you in Shul very soon. Johnny Mestel President CBTASNH

YIZKOR BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE

YIZKOR – MEMORY – is one of our most cherished traditions.

We enjoy remembering the Smachot, the joyous occasions but as well, we dedicate time to remember those who are no longer present with us. On Yom Kippur, during the Yizkor

Service, we join with Jews throughout the world to remember our loved ones. Once again this year, we are preparing a YIZKOR – BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE which

will be distributed to our members that day. This book contains the prayers recited in our synagogue and the names of the deceased in whose memories contributions have been made. This Book of Remembrance will be used at Yizkor Services throughout the year. If you wish to include the names of your departed loved ones in our 2017-18 Yizkor - Book of Remembrance, please complete the form below and return it to the synagogue office no later than Monday, July 31, 2017. Please include a minimum donation of $36 for the first

name and $18 for each additional name. This form can also be found on our website at www.bethtikvah.ca We encourage you to be part of this important publication. The proceeds from this campaign will be used for appropriate synagogue projects. The Day of Atonement is our traditional time for reflection and remembrance. It is our hope that through the publication of our Book of Remembrance we can contribute to this day being meaningful for you and your family. Yours truly,

Stuart Forman Zev Mestel Tamara Schwartz

Shiva-Asar B'Tamuz: The 17th Day of Tamuz: July 11th

Shiva Asar B’Tamuz, שבעה עשר בתמוז the seventeenth day of Tamuz, is one of the four Rabbinically instituted Jewish Fast days, commemorating the breach of the walls of Jerusalem prior to the destruction of the second Temple. This Fast day marks the beginning of the three week mourning period which ends on Tisha B’Av. The Fast commences, Tuesday July 11

th from 3:32 AM to 9:19

PM. Morning Services at 6:30 AM - Mincha/Ma’ariv at 8:30 PM.

The Nine Days The three weeks conclude with the “Nine Days”, from the first of Av, July 24

th – August 2

nd are the mourning days for the

destruction of the first and second Holy Temples and is intensified to the point of refraining from eating meat and drinking wine, except on Shabbat.

Tisha B’Av: Monday Night and Tuesday Fast Day Tuesday, August 1st Tisha B'Av, תשעה באב or ט׳ באב, is the saddest day on the Jewish calendar, as it is a month and a day fraught with tragedy.

The Fast of the ninth day of Av marks the destruction of the first Temple of Jerusalem by the Babylonians (586BCE) and also of the second Temple by the Romans (70CE). To commemorate the destruction of the two Temples, our Rabbis ordered the ninth day of Av to be a day of mourning and fasting. On Tisha B'Av, passages from Lamentations are read in the synagogue and special memorial candles are lit. At the morning Services neither Tallis nor Tefillin are worn, to show our deep sense of mourning; instead, they are put on in the afternoon. Shoes are removed and congregants seat themselves in low chairs or benches, just as one does in a period of mourning. The Fast begins on Monday, July 31

st at 8:23 PM,

with Mincha at 8:15 PM to be followed by Ma'ariv and the recitation of Aicha. On Tuesday, August 1

st morning Services at 6:30 AM (no Tallis or

Tefillin); Mincha Services (with Tallis and Tefillin) at 8:15 PM with the Fast ending on Tuesday at 9:04 PM.

but profond de l’expédition.
