Dear Michaelians and the whole community of SMI,

“It takes a thousand voices to tell a single story.” - Native American Proverb

Greetings of Peace!

I greet you warmly on the occasion of your centenary celebrations and on the 160th anniversaryof the De La Salle Brothers in Asia!

On this special year of jubilation for all Lasallians especially in Malaysia, we remember thestories of the six Brothers who landed in the shores of Asia 160 years ago and the manyLasallians who continued their legacy to this day. We retell with joy and gratitude the Lasallianstory in Asia because today, together with more than 12,000 lay teachers and partners, weaccompany over 200,000 students in more than 150 educational institutions and learning centersin 16 countries in Asia and the Pacific thanks to the courage, generosity, faith and zeal forservice of many Brothers and Lasallians who took part in the success of the Lasallian missionin this part of the world.

As I continue to visit the seven countries of our young Lasallian East Asia District, I find myselfenriched and edified by the stories of the different Lasallian institutions. Among those storiesthat stood out for me was the unique beginnings of your beloved St. Michael’s Institution becauseit reminded me of the founding story of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and of our charismaof Association for the Service of the Poor through Education.

St. John Baptist de La Salle and his first lay teachers formed a community of Brothers in 1680for the common purpose of providing quality human and spiritual education to the youngespecially the poor. Despite facing a series of crises, their schools, students and the number ofBrothers increased. According to our Superior General, Br. Alvaro Rodriguez Echeverria, and hisGeneral Council in their Circular 461, “the Lasallian Educational Mission in the past five decadeshas expanded globally in a manner unimaginable in the Founder’s time. While the number ofBrothers declines, the number of young people served by Lasallian educational institutions increases.”

Similarly, St. Michaels Institution was established through the same spirit of Faith and charismaof Lasallian Association. The Brothers sent three lay teachers to Ipoh to help Father Coppin ineducating the first 37 pupils in 1912. Eight years later, the Brothers finally arrived to managethe school. The apparent fraternal association in SMI in its early years and to this dayencouraged even the former students to choose the vocation of an educator and taught in theirbeloved school. Like our founding story, SMI faced and overcame many challenges over the yearsand today it is one of the largest schools in Malaysia with a remarkable reputation for academicexcellence and forming notable personalities whose contributions have been exceptional especiallyin the areas of public service, business, science and technology, faith, education, sports, artsand culture in Malaysia and beyond.

The Michaelian story is clearly a gift and heritage to the District and the Institute. As youcommemorate your glorious history and legacy, I urge you to share in an unified voice yourinspiring story to all the Lasallians in Asia and the world.

Be assured of my prayers for all of you!

It has been a year of jubilation as we mark our first centenary. We recall thegreat personalities associated with the founding and progress of St. Michael’s.Many of these I came to know very well. To name a few, our very firstheadmaster, Mr. P J Morsingh continued to visit the school in the fifties and

sixties. Brother Augustus designed our main building, which is still the pride of allMichaelians, it was completed over a period of thirty years. He was a Frenchman with greatideas, and is remembered as an inspiring teacher.

Brother Marcian composed our school rally, still cherished by all our Lasallian Schools, especially in Malaysia and Singapore. Brother Patrick O’ Donovan was director during theJapanese Occupation. He remained at his post when many fled, and paid the penalty spendingtime in Taiping Gaol and Pudu Gaol. Despite many hardships he was at his post as Directoronce more when the Japanese surrendered. In short time SMI reached premier status once more.

Brother U Paul was a familiar part of the Michaelian scene for 60 years teacher and director, and later in his retirement years. His gentle personality inspired the Michaelian spirit.

I am impressed by the centennial response of the Old Michaelians’ Association. They focusedon upgrading the school and its facilities, including a lovely new primary building, new toiletblocks, replacing the roof of the main building and much more. Michaelians far and nearbore the massive cost.

I am also impressed with the response from the school, led by Madam Loh and heradministrative team. Centennial enthusiasm has been in the air all through the year. I likedespecially the funfair plus talentime, as well as sports day where we saw a total participationof the whole school, plus parents and our many well-wishers.

Beneath it all lies the essence of what we are celebrating, namely an enduring and pricelessethos planted by the La Salle Brothers, that has empowered parents, teachers and studentsdown the years. This ethos has to do with our Lasallian tradition of faith, of service andcommunity, a tradition that has made St. Michael’s a showcase for inclusion where all areaccepted and made welcome. As far as possible our classes have a full diversity in terms ofrace, faith, tradition, social background and academic achievements.

Our family spirit is precious, and as we leave school we take it with us wherever our futurecareers may lead us. We have much to be thankful for, so much to celebrate.

God bless you all.

QUIS UT DEUS

DATO’ BROTHER VINCENT CORKERY

We closed our Centenary celebrations with a grand 309-table dinner that was wellenjoyed by all. Some notable participants included graduates from the Class of1945 as well as a prominent Michaelian, our Inspector General of Police Ydh TanSri Haji Ismail Haji Omar.

Old-boys from far and near had come back to celebrate and rekindle old friendships, relivedhappy memories of yesteryears, and most left with fonder memories of this reunion and strongerbonds. On record this was the biggest gathering of LaSallian old boys in Asia.

Congratulations to the Centenary Celebrations Organizing Committee! I would like to thank Mr.Adrian Tsen and members of the OMA, Mr. Michael Lee and members of the PTA and MadamLoh Wei Seng and her team of staff and students for their untiring efforts that made the wholecelebration such a memorable event.

As we move into the Michaelian century, we take with us precious values that we have beencelebrating. We have a very special heritage which we must cherish and develop as we face thechallenges ahead. Guided by the Lasallian values of faith, service and community, let us continueto equip our students with the right moral compass to navigate through life successfully.

Society and the media generally try to tell us that success is about being wealthy. Sadly, this isso easy to believe, and so difficult to disprove. It takes considerable reflection and deep soulsearching, perhaps a crisis to happen, before we realize how wrong it is! Chasing wealthindiscreetly will lead many up the wrong path with dire consequences. I am glad to share withyou that a prominent leader once observed that the ratio of students from Lasallian schools incaring professions that serve society is higher than that from other schools.

I am always impressed by the role played by the various clubs and organizations in the school,in particular the role played by student leaders, in promoting the school’s heritage. We couldbring into focus more special training for these student leaders to further enhance theirleadership ability.

An important feature of our heritage is the stand we take to do our very best for the weakest. Inwhat other ways can we reach out to the less-privileged and weaker students? Food for thought.

At gatherings of the Centenary Celebrations, my old classmates and I relived with affection andgratitude some experiences and lessons learned from our teachers. After more than forty years,we still cherish these teachers. Such is the effect of their efforts, care and affection for us!

As we have received an excellent heritage from our predecessors of the first 100 years, let us allbuild on it and pass on an enhanced heritage to our successors in the second Michaelian century.

Dear Michaelians,

In 2012 we marked an important milestone for St. Michael’s Institution. This year St. Michael’s Institutioncelebrated her Centennial year. I am proud that your PTA had played a role in helping your schoolcelebrate this momentous occasion. I like to thank the staff and students involved for having organised

the Centennial Funfair. This event was very successful and raised over a hundred thousand ringgit that will be utilisedfor enhancing the school’s environment, both physical and academic. I also want to thank your parents, who havecommitted themselves financially, emotionally and have given up their time and made effort to providing you with a goodeducation and who have contributed financially to the PTA.

The theme for our Centenary is Cherishing Our Past, Embracing the Future. To you all in St.Michael’s today, this will oneday be your Past. You are at an important rite of passage in your lives. You are now in school where what you wear, what you can and cannot do and when you can and cannot do it are all mandated by others. You will soon move on toyour future where the decision of what you wear and what you can or cannot do will be entirely yours.

In your rite of passage, when you make the transition from your present to your future and your present becomes your past, you need to realise that every older generation becomes more and more like their parents as they age. As parents now, weare guilty of reminding you how we used to do things and the presumption that our past ways are better. As you moveforward you need to discern what we tell you as we have a selective memory about the things we have done and themisdeeds of our youth and you must know the fact that our parents also worried about where our generation was heading. Parentstend to make the mistake of taking the moral high ground but what we must realise is that no generation should ever takesuch a stand as no generation can ever claim to have had all the answers. My parents’ generation have erred just asmine have and just as yours will. This message is to remind you to be HUMBLE as you move on to your future.

You are now living in an age of information. You have in your mobile phone the potential to access more knowledgethan what is available in any school library in history. Your behaviours as compared to your elders are vastly changeddue to access to better and faster technology and thus, more information. Your benefits are enormous but so too areyour challenges. You, who have access to more information than any other generation who have gone before you mustknow how to differentiate the useful from the useless, the real from the fake, the truth from the lie and the good from thebad. As your generation makes quantum leaps in science and technology not matched at any time in human civilization, you will need one more important quality, together with humility, to guide you in making the world a better place for yourchildren. The quality that will set you straight as you become more sophisticated is INTEGRITY. Integrity is defined as“the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; a level of living in wholeness and truth in all aspects ofour lives”. With integrity, I am sure you will rise above all your future challenges.

Presently our society is mired in corruption, inefficiency, social injustice and system breakdown because we, your elders, have failed in integrity. We grew up in a climate of social unrest and to gain a measure of stability we made compromises. We thought we were right and magnanimous to make those compromises. Sometimes it looks like there is an advantagein not being honest to ourselves and not insisting on the truth. However, this advantage is short lived and even provento be a lie in the long run. Integrity means we do not make compromises. Compromise in little things and before weknow it we are not the men that we should be and we begin our journey of self-destruction. Because generations beforeyou made compromises and failed in integrity we are now living in a society best described in the words of the authorof Big Brother. “In a time of deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act” - George Orwell. We now live in a societywhere we persecute the messenger of truth and reward the guilty.

Michaelians, be humble when you judge others and always march forward with integrity so that your children will enjoyyour sacrifices and look at your deeds with pride. Michaelians be Valiant and True.

I thank my colleagues in the committee of the PTA and our advisor, Madam Loh Wei Seng for the dedication that theyhave shown this year in organising the various centennial events and their dedication to the school. I also thank theteachers and staff of St. Michael’s for their professionalism and the standard of care shown to our children.

I am grateful to have had the opportunity to have chaired your PTA and thank you for it. I wish you best wishes inyour future and pray that with integrity and humility you will make the right choices and that your experience in St.Michael’s will give you the confidence and the skill to live life fully.

Yours sincerely,MR. JOSEPH MICHAEL LEE, JPPTA Chairman

I am honoured to be part of a tradition that looks beyond the needs of eachstudent at St Michael’s. For the past 100 years, the institution has been faithfullyadvocating a mission of teaching, diffusing knowledge along the broadestpossible line and pursuing excellence in every endeavour. SMI, for the past

and present generations, has been an education bastion where lives are transformed andimpacted in every aspect.

As an old boy of SMI, I share my extreme joy with many other old Michaelians to see howstudents are inspired, groomed and nurtured to eventually become successful citizens intoday’s complex, demanding society. This reflects the most important feature of La Salleeducation which emphasizes on young men and women who seek to make a difference, preparing them to face the challenges that arise. La Salle education makes one sees lifeand challenges differently. When a person changes his heart, he changes his life and whenone person changes his life, the lives of those around him also change.

We are proud that among St Michael’s illustrious alumni are Ipoh’s first mayor, Tan SriDato’ Lee Loy Seng, federal ministers, corporate leaders, professionals in various sectors, professors, religious leaders, sports personalities, world-class surgeons and academicians. These are the people who had walked through the corridors of St Michael’s under thewatchful eyes of the La Salle Brothers and teachers.

I congratulate the school, particularly the principal Madam Loh Wei Seng, for havingsuccessfully organised numerous programmes for the Centennial Celebration. Fund-raisingevents like the Annual Drama, Talentime and Fun-fair managed to leave a lasting impressionon many of us. Likewise, programmes to usher in the centennial witnessed the participationof all stakeholders – the La Salle Brothers, the Board of Governors, the Parent-TeacherAssociation, and the Old Michaelians Association - a get-together that had greatly inspiredthe Michaelian community.

As we step into the New Century, I urge all young Michaelians to plan your future. Carefullywrite your plans, set your target and decide on your plan of attack. State objectively whatyou are willing to give up to achieve your goals, visualize your action, see it happeningand make it happen.

2012 is a memorable year in the chronological history of St. Michael’s Institution. We are proudthat the school has successfully sailed through a journey of 100 years, and produced manyoutstanding individuals who are successful personnel in many different fields.

anniversary of the school, many activities were held such as the Centennial Run and Sports, the fun fair andtalentime, the drama Jean Baptiste: The Lost Chronicles and Centennial Dinner.

Despite being busy preparing for our centennial celebrations, the school managed to achieve good results inthe PMR, SPM and STPM examinations. The results were by far the best in the last few years with a grade pointaverage (GPS) of 2.01 and 4.54 for the PMR and SPM exams respectively. A total of 59 students scored all A’s inthe PMR, 25 students in the SPM and 5 students in the STPM examinations. Michaelian Wong Chan Kit was oneof Perak State’s excellent straight A students for the 2011 SPM exam. As for the 2011 STPM exam results, ourschool was commended for being one of Kinta District’s Best in Quality Schools.

These victoriesbear testimony to the fact that there exists a great diversity of talents in our school as it has been very much apart of our Michaelian school culture over the 100 years.

Thus, this year’s theme “Cherishing Our Past, Embracing The Future” is pertinent and appropriate. It is hopedthat we will cherish our past excellent achievements of our school, the noble commitment and devotion of ourBrother Directors, Brothers, former principals, teachers and students. The future of our alma mater rests on allof us. We all have to join forces to bring St. Michael’s Institution to greater heights in the near future.

Our commemorative magazine, ‘The Michaelian” this year is a precious memento of our alma mater thatillustrates the achievements, challenges, aspirations and visions of our fore founding fathers. It also records someof the milestones of its successful and interesting legacy handed down by the founding La Salle Brothers. Readerscan get a glimpse of what life was and is like in St. Michael’s. Joshua Loo Zhi Xiong (USS5)

of The Year

I would like to take this opportunity to first thank God for all His guidance and supportthrough my six and a half years in this beautiful school. My deepest gratitude to my parentsand teachers who have made an impact in my life throughout my time spent in St. Michael’sInstitution. My appreciation to fellow Michaelian brothers who have walked alongside withme through thrilling times and experiencing storms and rainbows together with me.

The resounding memories of my journey as a Michaelian still rings fresh in my mind. Thethought of the Head Boy never really dawn upon me until I felt a calling deep down in myheart to follow the inspirations of leaders who have made their story a history. I recallthe time when I first stepped into the doors of this school. And all I notice was boys withthe Michaelian tie around their necks. One thing I’m proud to proclaim and present to theworld outside about my beloved school, St. Michael’s, is the Michaelian spirit. Never oncedid the Michaelian spirit fail to make me stand in awe of its glory and I believe it neverwill. To me, the Lasallian culture which represents the tradition and heritage of our schoolis the solid foundation to our Michaelians Spirit. I would say the synergy of us Michaelianis the world’s greatest wonder to me. Whenever we Michaelians gather for a cause, be itsupporting our school’s Military Band, Sports day, Centennial Fun Fair, drama or any eventwhere Michaelians gather, we make it a point to leave a mark stating, “Michaelians werehere before’. And it is this mark that shows the world how great this school is.

I thank God for getting teachers with caring hearts, vibrant yet well mannered studentsand dedicated people who are willing to go all out for the cause of alleviating our school’sname. My utmost salutation to every Michaelian, past, present and future who are workingbehind the scenes propelling our school to greater heights.

Allow me to end my speech with this quote by Terence, a former Michaelian, “We only livethis life once. So, when we dream, dream big. When we love, love unconditionally.”

Quis Ut Deus.

Thank you.

As history has proven, one of the greatest honours to be bestowed upon a person is thatof being entrusted with the baton of leadership. Having said that, it is a stupendous honourto receive the “Lady Michaelian of the Year” award. When I first walked through the corridorsand passages of this school, contrary to what I had actually thought, it was hope andaffection that I could taste not fear and worries.

More than 12 months of serving this great institution and its wonderful people have taughtme one timeless lesson of life which is climbing the ladder of leadership is nothingcompared to assuming the exigencies and responsibilities of leadership itself. For that, Ishall be forever grateful to my teachers namely Mr. Karunagaran, the prefectorial boardadvisor, my class teacher, Pn. Sarojini and all the voices of guidance such as my colleaguesand my friends whose faith in me has never once dimmed and above all for coming to myaid in my hour of trials and tribulations. I am also deeply grateful to my teachers whosededication I have always appreciated and my classmates for bringing out the many smileson my face but also for extending to me the most favourable of conditions which areessential to my academic pursuits.

My fellow Michaelians,As I address you all in this hall on this grand occasion, our institution stands on thethreshold of a new century. Let there be no doubt, for as we sail into the waters of thefuture, there will be challenges and requirements to be met. However, as the annals of thepast whisper to us, that behind every challenge, glory and grandeur awaits us. I stand hereto reaffirm my faith and deep seated conviction that this school will be in possession ofthe chalice of championship in the coming decades. After all, we Michaelians have a longtradition of settling for nothing less than an all out victory but of course within theboundaries of ethics and morality.

Finally, as a new dawn of leadership is at hand I would like to wish the next batch ofMichaelian leaders who will hold high the torch of Michaelian ideals and values amidsta historic moment: My sincerest and best of wishes to all of you. With that, God blessyou all and God bless this great institution, my beloved school and my second home.Thank you.

In the first eight years of its existence, this Institution was known as St. Michael’s School and wasunder the management of the devoted and zealous Parish Priest of St. Michael’s Church Ipoh. In 1912 heearnestly besought the Rev. Bro. James, who had quite recently been appointed Visitor of the District, toopen a school in his parish. As there were no Brothers available at that time, all that Rev. Bro. Jamescould do was to give him a Headmaster and some assistant teachers from St. Xavier’s Institution, Penang.

Mr. Paul J. Morsingh, a very zealous convert of St. Xavier’s generously accepted the office ofHeadmaster, though he feared the responsibility and regretted leaving his Old School which had become ahome to him. He faced the ordeal, in the soldierly spirit of his race. He had to face the competition withfully-qualified European Head Masters who were in charge of Schools already fully organized and enjoyinglocal patronage.

It was necessary to obtain the approval of the Government for the proposed School. This was securedon the understanding that the Brothers would take over the management as soon as possible. This assurancewas given with confidence as His Lordship, the Bishop of Malacca had obtained a promise of Brothersfrom Brother Superior-General of the Brothers.

A beginning was made on the 4th of December 1912. The Rev. Father J.B. Coppin, the Founder, gave itthe name, St. Michael’s School. The first enrolment was 39. As a result of the courage and untiring zeal ofthe new Headmaster Mr. P.J. Morsingh, sustained by the devoted Founder, the School prospered from itsvery start. Soon the attendance was too great for the actual accommodation.

Occasional visits were paid to the School by the Brothers from St. Xavier’s Penang: Advice andencouragement were sympathetically given. Thus the spirit of St. Xavier’s, the Alma Mater of practicallyall the teachers, was infused into the new School. Another encouraging step was the purchase, by the Rev.Bro. Visitor, of the School grounds and buildings, for the sum of $30,000. The Rev. Manager agreed to paya monthly rent of $70, until such time as the Brothers could take over the entire management.

The Great War darkened the prospects of the new School, as it become almost impossible to securethe Brothers for the fulfilment of the promise. At the same time the strenuous work to which the Headmaster,Mr. Morsingh, gave himself- we may truly say without counting the cost,-began to tell seriously upon hishealth. It became necessary to replace him in 1920. It was impossible to find a suitable substitute. In thecircumstances the Right Rev. Father Maritte, Vicar General of the Diocese, made a pathetic appeal to theRev. Bro. Visitor to come to the rescue by taking over the entire management.

20

Page 25: Cover Opensize 2012 - omaipoh.com.my · in the spirit of our motto QUIS UT DEUS ... En. Khiew Wai Mun (Guru Kanan Bahasa), En. Abdul Qaiyum b. Abdul Aziz ... Kami akur dengan hakikat

The appeal was discussed by the District Council on June 30th, 1920. The Rev. Bro. Visitor rose tothe occasion. It was the question of safeguarding the interests of the Catholic children attending the School. In spite of the terrible burden which the needs of the entire district placed upon him, especially owing tothe shortage of the Brothers, trusting in divine Providence and in the protection of the great Patron of theSchool, the Archangel, St. Michael, he decided, supported by the advice of his Council, to take the finalstep.

Early in July he paid a visit to Ipoh and arranged preliminaries with the Rev. Father Coppin. It wasdecided that the Brothers would take over the School on the 16th of August 1920. Accordingly Rev. Bro. Paul, then Director of the Brothers’ School in Taiping, was transferred to Ipoh. Two other Brothers, Bro. HermanagildJohn, from Singapore, and Bro. Finian Loarn from Taiping, were given to him as helpers. Mr. P.J. Morsinghremained at the school for a few days to hand over the books and then went for a well-earned holiday.

The laying of the foundation stone of the present building by Major C.W.C. Parr, O.B.E., British Presidentof Perak, took place on the 7th of June 1922. This ceremony was preceded by that of the Blessing of theStone, performed by His Grace Mgr. Merel, Archbishop of Craina, late Vicar Apostolic of Canton.

When the Hon. Mr. C.W.C. Parr had declared the foundation stone well and truly laid he added that itgave him great pleasure to come to Ipoh for that ceremony, first on account of the importance of EnglishEducation in the States and secondly because of the great and good work the Christian Brothers had doneand were doing in the cause of Education. The State had indebted to bodies like the Christian Brothers whodevoted their energies to this great cause. In replying on behalf of the management of the Rev. Bro. James,Visitors, presented his sincere thanks to Major Parr and to His Grace, Archbishop Merel, for their respectiveparts in the ceremony. He paid a high tribute to the work done by Rev. Father Coppin, the founder of theSchool, during the trying years of the War and until the management was handed over to the Brothers. Healso refered, in the highest term of praise, to the work of the first Headmaster, Mr. P.J. Morsingh. It was mainlydue to his unflagging zeal, untiring efforts, undaunted courage and above all, to his unblemished career thatthe School all along maintained a reputation for success, efficiency and high tone. It was a great pleasurethat the Brothers to find such a good spirit prevailing in the School at the time they took it over.

21

Subscription lists were started in view of partially covering the expenses but owing the rubber slumpprevailing at a time only a very small sum was realised. The name of Ms. M. Taveira deserves mention in thisconnection as her list brought in $2,109. Class subscription helped much in the building and furnishing of theSchool Chapel.

This occupation is gradual. The final move was made on the 15th of May 1923, Feast of the St. JohnBaptist de la Salle. The building was blessed by the Rev. J.B. Coppin, the ever zealous founder and the Brotherstook formal possession under the special protection of their holy Founder. The question was even discussedas to whether it would not be better to transfer the patronage to him by calling the Institution by his namebut it was not forgotten that he himself had a great devotion to the great Archangel and had looked up tohim as a special Patron of his work. His disciples were certainly acting in accordance with his spirit in continuingto regard him as a special heavenly Protector.

However, the statue of John Baptist de la Salle, which was ordered while the matter was still underdiscussion, was duly placed in its present position (Central Gable) on the 27th of July, after having been blessedby Archbishop Merel. On the 14th of September the chapel and all the articles used in it were blessed by theRev. Father J.B. Coppin. Immediately after the blessing he said mass and the Brothers had at last the happinessof having their Lord and Master present amongst them in the Most Blessed Sacrament of his Love.

The Hon. Dr. R.O. Winstedt, Director of Education, paid his first visit on the 9th of September 1925. Hewrote in the school diary:—”This is a most excellent building for a school, handsome in design and withwell-lit and well-propotioned classrooms. The pupi;s look exceptionally neat and clean. The tone of theSchool is good.”

On the 2nd of the following year, Dr.Winstedt, accompanied by the Inspector ofSchools, assisted at the Annual School Sports. Thefollowing day he visited the School. He recordedthat “was pleased with the alertness andneatness of the pupils.” He was glad to note thatthere were no over-age boys in the classes.

On the occasion of the Annual Sports heldon the August 13th 1927, H.E. Sir Hugh Clifford,High Commissioner of the F.M.S. and Governor ofthe Straits Settlements, paid a surprise visit; heshowed a keen interest in the events. This Sportsgathering was one of the most representative everheld in Ipoh. “Splendid Sportsmanship, keencompetition and a most enjoyable meeting” wasthe verdict given at its conclusion by those whoassisted at them.

The Centennial year has been a year of celebration at St Michael’s Ipoh as 2012 also coincideswith a number of historical events. We remember the arrival of the La Salle Brothers at the shoresof South East Asia 160 years ago and the eventual establishments of two schools in the sameyear – St Joseph’s Singapore and St Xavier’s Penang. The opening up of these schools markedan era of education excellence in the region. The founding of St Michael’s Ipoh in 1912 alsomarked another milestone as it offered an opportunity for more youth to obtain education parexcellence based on the teaching of De La Salle. A hundred years forward, St Michael’s hasattained a status which is of respect and reverence.

“Cherishing Our Past, Embracing The Future” is the theme aptly used by St Michael’s Institutionfor two years in conjunction with its 100 years of existence to reflect the commitment andendeavor of the school community. This has left an indelible mark among many of us in treasuringour past and to face the challenges in the future.

The Centennial celebration programmes were carried out successfully by the school, the old boysand the PTA. The activities were not all celebratory in nature but instead filled with messages ofhope, aspirations and our quest to build better Michaelians! We express our appreciation toMadam Loh Wei Seng and her entire team of teachers who had made the centennial occasionmeaningful and historic.

The Board has always worked to support the Principal in maintaining an ethos for the schoolwhich promotes the moral, spiritual, intellectual, social and personal development of all its pupils.St Michael’s, as a school belonging to the bigger La Sallian family, has always treasured the ethosand heritage to harness individual potential, both in the dimension of moral, academic andcurricular performance.

St. Michael’s turns 100 this year. Various activities have been organized for the celebrationwith Michaelians from all walks of life involved. OMA, on its part, has been spearheadingthe Centennial Celebration and is involved in many activities, in active collaboration, withthe school.

It continues to render strong support especially when the school was organising theCentennial Run and Centennial Food and Fun Fair.

Three major projects for the celebration were planned by the OMA. The first, which wascompleted successfully was the Centennial play - “Jean Baptiste; The Lost Chronicles”.

The second project, OMA undertook with pride was the publication of a Centennial book -“VALIANT and TRUE”. The books were on sale before the Centennial Dinner. It’s a collector’sitem and makes a good gift too. Unlike many previous publications on St. Michael’s,“Valiant and True” highlights many unpublished photographs, stories and events.

Finally, OMA held its Centennial Dinner on 29.9.2012. All tickets were sold out months beforethe occasion. More than 3000 people, far and near, turned up in drove at the alma materthe day.

OMA wishes to thank our Advisors - Dato Brother Vincent Corkery and Brother Matthew Bayfor their invaluable guidance and advice.

It also wishes to thank the BOG, PTA and the Principal of SMI for extending a very strongand cordial working relationship with the OMA.

It conclusion, let’s all be Valiant and True and together we Embrace the Future.

My heartiest congratulations to the Editorial Board of the St. Michael’s IpohCentennial Magazine for successfully producing this magazine, and I wish tothank the Board for giving me the honour and opportunity to say a few words.

Fond memories of SMI have cropped up so often that I find it hard to believe that it hasbeen 20 years since I retired from SMI. I believe that during those years SMI has improvedand developed tremendously. SMI will always be dear to me because I was fortunate tobenefit from the unique values and traditions set by at least eleven selfless, dedicated anddevoted La Salle Brothers. I was also very fortunate to have a very good set of teacherswho, being steeped in the La Sallian traditions themselves, freely volunteered their help, service and advice without being asked. It was therefore not surprising that the studentsmanifested the La Sallian traits and traditions - diligence, interests, enthusiasm, sense ofresponsibilities and capabilities in their pursuit of excellence. And during those 20 years Icannot help but be humbled that SMI has not forgotten me. Those of us who have studiedand worked in SMI should consider ourselves truly blessed.

To those who are still at SMI, I wish to give a simple word of advice. To do this I wish toshare with you an article by Martin R. De Haan II. Scientific measurements indicate that weare moving even when we are standing still. Continental land masses sit on enormous slabsof rock that slide very slowly at the rate of 1 to 8 inches per year. America is graduallymoving westward, away from Europe, at the rate of 3 inches per year.

Our Milky Way galaxy is hurtling through space at 375 miles per second or 1.3 millionmiles per hour. Within our own galaxy the sun and its solar system are zooming along at12.4 miles per second (43,000 mph) in the direction of the star Vega in the constellationLyra.

A man lying on his back in a quiet park on a cloudless day may feel as though all timeand movement have stopped under the hot rays of a noonday sun. But the scientist knowsthat we are hurtling through the heavens at unimaginable speeds. Our days and opportunitiesto live pass by so rapidly that we cannot afford to waste time.

God bless you all.

OUR august ST. MICHAEL’S INSTITUTION, IPOH is celebrating its 100 years of gallantexistence and untiring noble service to the community and nation. SMI is theeducational landmark of Perak but its clarion call is universal. MICHAELIANS havespread their wings to all parts of the world to do their duty in earnest to humanity

as envisaged by De La Salle and the host of other dauntless forerunners.

I salute the Principal Madam Loh Wei Seng, the administrators, the teachers and Young Michaeliansfor rising up to the occasion and taking relentless measures to organize this Grand CentennialCelebrations. Congratulations!

I would like to express my sincere thanks to the Editorial Board for inviting me to write thismessage in conjunction with the Centennial Celebration.

In early 1992, I was given the opportunity to lead St. Michael’s Institution. I was overwhelmedwith joy, enthusiasm and also apprehension to take up the challenge. Different groups of peopleassociated with this prestigious institution had different things to say. Some portrayed it as aglorious treasure trove of boundless knowledge. Some were proud of the holistic education itoffered to mould wholesome human beings who could readily weather any season and situation. Some expressed how they were touched by the grace, concern, and guidance of the white robedBrothers in the like of my mentors Brother Paul and Brother Vincent, who sacrificed their lifein selfless service to community for decades. Others whispered into my ears about the ailingdiscipline among the young Michaelians and warned about the little ‘rowdies and gangsters’.They even drew my attention to the teaching staff who frequented the Share Market acrossIpoh Padang.

The Perak Education Department also had a special mission. They said, ‘Restore the fading gloryof the magnificent St. Michael’s Institution in all aspects’. The then Chief Education Officer Perak,Dato Rahim Majid had just adopted the inspirational words “PERAK NUMBER ONE” for all theschools in Perak. My good friend and St. Michael’s Parent-Teacher Association President En. HusinKamdi, the senior officer in-charge of administration in the Perak Education Department, was verykeen to make “ST. MICHAEL’S AS NUMBER ONE” in keeping with the Department’s vision. Thedeputy president of PTA, Tan Sri Darshan Singh was all for it.

What had the doyens of St. Michael’s to say?

The first thing I did before reporting for duty was to pay homage to the legendary GURUS BrotherUltan Paul and Brother Vincent Corkery of St. Michael’s. They concurred to some extend withthe above observations and shared their Michaelian experience.

Brother Paul in a parable form talked about “Actors” or “Doers” who get down to the task inhand and contribute their effort and time and talent, “Spectators” who enjoy seeing other peopledo a job, and refuse to lend a helping hand, even if they are able to do so, and “Operators”who are hardworking people who do their best to get things done, but no one comes to theirassistance. He advised that we should look for Excellence in whatever we do and change the

laissez-faire attitude and to do itin Prayerful way. Brother Vincent’s wisdom was to

take life one day at a time, and to take people with all courtesy if we want to achieveanything.

To transform the school, the Department made a 100% change in all the senior Administrators. With me came a very efficient and dedicated Senior Assistant of Administration, Pn. Aziyah bt.Amiruddin from Anderson School, Mr. Toh Ah Huat, a fair and firm Senior Assistant of StudentAffairs with a lot of experience from Teluk Intan and En. Rauhi b. Mohd Isa a dynamic and straightforward Afternoon Supervisor from SM Megat Khas (Dato Rauhi became the Chief EducationOfficer Perak in 2010 and at the SM Tarcisian Convent Speech Day he acknowledged theMichaelian Experience).

We listened very attentively, pondered intensively, observed every relevant aspect minutely andwas all set to chart a course of action to redeem the honour of St. Michael’s. We reached withinand without for solutions. We consulted all interested parties concerned. We worked out strategiesto give the school a face-lift. Landscaping the compound with ornamental trees and flower plants, rewiring the whole school to ensure safety, cleaning up the toilets, upgrading the cafeteria, draining the school field, building a new living skill building, and a foyer with good ambiancewere all in the pipeline.

In 1992 we celebrated the 80 th anniversary of our beloved school in a grand way including allstakeholders. We brought the OMA closer and made them welcome by organizing a football matchwith the staff and OMA members.

In 1993 the PTA organized a Cleanathon to paint up the school and beautify the environment. The teachers said that in the tradition of the school they have not raised anything more RM30,000. I threw a challenge to the students and teachers that if they could collect more thanRM 50,000 I would cycle to Sg. Siput (U). They took up the challenge and brought in RM 75,000.I cycled the 27km with 200 students and teachers. What a joy it was!

This transformed SMI culture and brought back the Michaelian spirit. The “Doers” multiplied, the“Spectators” became active participants, the “Operators” received great recognition. The greatteachers, proactive parents, illustrious OMA members and beloved young Michaelians were allvaliant and true in their endeavour to establish “ST. MICHAEL’S AS NUMBER ONE”. My team andI appreciate the personal support given by Dato K.K. Lim, Tan Sri Lee Loy Seng, Tan Sri Lee OiHian, En. Husin Kamdi, Tan Sri Darshan Singh Gill, Mr. Lim Keng Hoo, Mr. Adrian Tsen, and hostof others. ‘Like the phoenix rising from the ashes’ St. Michael’s bloomed into full glory. Once againSMI was in the limelight. I had only three years to set the pace with my dedicated and marvelousteam. I recall with humility and gratitude the divine guidance given by the legendary Rev. BroPaul, Rev. Bro Vincent and other well-wishers. I am pleased that my successors with their teamshad taken our exemplary institution to greater heights. St. Michael’s will march on in all GLORY.

Cherish the Michaelian experience and keep the Michaelian Spirit always burning bright.

In the blink of an eye, St. Michael’s celebrates its 100 years of existence andit is truly a privilege to have been given the opportunity to be part of itslegacy. St. Michael’s is indeed an extraordinary school- rich in tradition and

firmly focused on the future. The tradition of academic excellence of the school spans manyyears. St. Michael’s is tremendously proud of the alumni, many of whom hold or have heldhigh positions in local, national and international spheres.

One deep impression of mine of the Michaelian tradition is the strong family spirit whichcuts across barriers of race, religion and culture. It is my fervent hope that we will continueto perpetuate this great tradition of goodwill and harmony.

All schools strive to provide an education environment vital to the children to develop andrealize their best potentials. St. Michael’s has done well in this area of producingwholesome, useful and responsible citizens to serve the nation.

To the sons and daughters of St. Michael’s, it is my hope that when success is achievedand you hold an important position of responsibility, you will perform and serve withintegrity and accountability for the good of the nation. Bear in mind, the quality of yourservice will affect the lives of many.

To all current and future Michaelians, continue to embrace the rich heritage and traditionthat the school is proud of, immerse in the experience of education the school providedand strive hard for a better future.

God bless us all.

“Bliss it was in that dawn to be alive, but to be young was very heaven.”- William Wordsworth

I am blessed to have been educated at St. Michael’s Institution, Ipoh, where I wasgroomed by the best of teachers for my future leadership roles as teacher and principal. Everyschool day I looked forward to the morning assembly where Brother Ultan Paul would beginwith the words: “Let us remember that we are in the holy presence of God”. All of us, youngboys, regardless of race, creed or colour, felt that we were in a special place that remains sacredin our hearts. Ever calm, collected and civil, Brother Paul taught us the Michaelian way: thereis no need to be loud and contentious. A soft answer turns away wrath. We learned the bestof manners and acquired a strong sense of right and wrong. Brother Paul widened our horizonsto be ambassadors of peace and justice to the whole wide world. Michaelians today are a globalcommunity in many lands far and near but we remain faithful to our Lasallian roots - as servantsof Faith, Zeal and Service.

Brother Vincent for many years was the self-effacing advisor and close confidante of BrotherPaul. He is one of Ireland’s greatest gifts to St. Michael’s. He is one person who would havemade it to the top in any chosen profession because of his intellectual depth andphilosophical spirit. We have always marvelled at his gift for teaching especially of the GeneralPaper and Literature. A graduate in Political Science, Brother Vincent has nurture a wholespectrum of the fine arts at St. Michael’s including music, drama and the Michaelian Chineseorchestra.

At the time of writing, Brother Vincent is very much the patriarch of the worldwide Michaelianfamily. He is the vital link between Michaelians, past and present. We pray for God’s blessingson a Lasallian mentor who has given his life for the education of youth particularly at St.Michael’s.

I shall never forget two teachers in particular: Brother Casimir Hannon and Mr. Eric Gomez. They inspired my generation of Michaelians to develop the best we had in ourselves, to beworthy Michaelians and to live by high ideals in life.

Brother Casimir Hannon was from Ireland but Malaysia was his adopted home forever. Hedeeply loved St. Michael’s and we, young Michaelians, could sense how much he felt for usand for our school. He was a powerful force in drama and debating. Without Brother Casimir’sguidance and training, I would never have attained the heights of public speaking, dramaand school leadership that I was to achieve in my later years. I remember the many after-school training sessions he conducted for us in a spirit of total self-sacrifice. He perfectedevery faulty line I spoke in “The Winslow Boy” which the school staged in 1965. Indeed, itwas Brother Casimir who made us effective communicators. In the 1970s, Brother Casimir

32

Page 37: Cover Opensize 2012 - omaipoh.com.my · in the spirit of our motto QUIS UT DEUS ... En. Khiew Wai Mun (Guru Kanan Bahasa), En. Abdul Qaiyum b. Abdul Aziz ... Kami akur dengan hakikat

was appointed Brother Director of St.Xavier’s Institution, Penang. In his last years, he served with

valour as Principal of SM Stella Maris, Kuala Lumpur. At both these schools, his personalcharisma worked miracles in the lives of his teachers and students.

Another Michaelian legend is Mr. Eric Gomez who was Brother Casimir’s partner in trainingthe school debators. Mr. Gomez, himself an old boy of St. Michael’s, sharpened our criticaland analytical skills in debating. He was also famous for his punchlines and rhetoricalquestions. In addition, Mr. Gomez was our Literature teacher in Form V (1960s). I clearlyremember how beautifully he taught us “The Merchant of Venice”. Many of us were inspiredto read more of the English classics as a logical result of Mr. Gomez’s forays into literature. There is also a chapter in Mr. Gomez’s life which remains for me a classic example of Lasalliandevotion to the students under his care. Sometime in September 1967, Mr. Eric Gomez washospitalised in the Ipoh General Hospital. We were just a month away from the CambridgeSchool Certificate and Malaysia School Certificate examinations. Mr. Gomez worked daily athis hospital bed writing Literature essay notes for us. These notes were sent to the schoolevery day to be written by the class monitors on the blackboard for the Form V classes tocopy and study. (There were no photocopy machines in 1960s in Ipoh town.) Mr. Gomez fromhis hospital bed ensured that everyone passed the Cambridge English Literature paper, manywith distinctions.

On the occasion of SMI’s 100th Anniversary, I wish to thank all my teachers and the presentteaching staff of St. Michael’s for their devotion to the students entrusted them. I am remindedof the words in the Kohima Epitaph of the Burma Star Association of the Second World Warwhich I have adapted as follows:

“When we go homeWe shall tell our children of you and say

For our tomorrowOur Lasallian teachers gave their today.”

Greeting Michaelians!

On this auspicious year of 2012 whereby Michaelians all over theworld will celebrate and rejoice on this Centennial year of their alma mater, Iam glad that I have the priviledge of being connected to this wonderfulinstitution.

For the past century, SMI has been able to nurture remarkable citizens andbecome the school of choice for numerous generations of Perakians. SMI hasreached an important milestone and now all should reflect whether SMI willstill be relevant and guide future generations of Ipohites like a beacon togreater heights in the next century to come.

Thus all those who have SMI in their hearts should come forward to ensurethat SMI will still progress and flourish.

Thank you.

SYNOPSIS - Jean Baptiste : The Lost Chronicles18th Century France. A country bold and flamboyant, a jewel in the West, ruled by the Sun King, Louis

the 14th. It is a time of decadence and opulent grandeur. It is also the time when the common man suffersunder the aristocratic rule of French court. Corruption and vices abound and everyone in the Court of theSun King is embroiled in political machinations. The common man is neglected, overworked and underpaid. His children have absolutely no hope for the future for the education is only reserved for the rich and powerful. These are indeeed dark times to be born without noble heritage.

Into this world of stark contrast reveals a young man, a priest who is compelled by a higher power todo all he can to help the poor and the needy. This man is Jean-Baptiste de La Salle. Himself born of nobleheritage, he is nonetheless driven early on by the Voices in his heart to fight for the underprivileged, by offeringthem free education. He is aided by willing hands and volunteers.

But his revolutionary work arouses the ire of those who seek domination over the poor and the helpless,as powerful nobles begin to plot his destruction and that of his fledging school. With money, power anddangerous intent at their disposal, they will stop at nothing to undo Jean-Baptiste’s efforts. But will theysucceed? Who would helped Jean-Baptiste sow the seeds of what is to become one of the most powerfuleducational movements in the history of Man?

Come witness the decadence and grandeur of the Sun King’s Court in this amazing yet-to-be-told storyof Jean Baptiste de La Salle. It is a story that chronicles the missing years of his initial struggle to build hisfirst school. Be shocked by the sex, politics and scandals that were an everyday staple in the French Court.Learn and discover the power of Faith, Hope and Courage in the face of corruption, greed, lust and power-mongering in this epic tale brought to the humble school play. Towards this end, we are much indebted to our La Salle Brothersand predecessors who passed on to us a rich heritage of good values and effective practices”.

The unveiling of the Centennial Logo was even more exciting for the Michaelian community. The video above(courtesy of ipohnews) said it all. It was a day to remember at St. Michael’s when British High Commissioner His Excellency Mr. Simon Featherstone andhis wife Madam Gail arrived to unveil a plaque that is close to the hearts of so many veteran servicemen and locals, including the late Brother Ultan Paul.

For war historian Mr. Chye Kooi Loong, his dream to witness the plaque being accorded a rightful place at St. Michael’swas fulfilled that day. His strong spirit and determination ruled the day as he and his wife had to travel all the wayfrom Kampar despite their physical limitations.

At St. Michael’s, it was a very significant occasion because the formation of the British Battalion at SMI to fight againstthe invading Japanese was witnessed personally by Brother Ultan Paul.

In fact, during the arrival of the British soldiers at St. Michael’s on either 18 or 19 December 1941, Brother Paul wasthere to welcome the soldiers.

“I was here at that time and I remember it well”, he said. “The Surreys came here first - 18th December and the Leicestershirearrived later in the evening. They were put into the classrooms on the ground floor, first floor and the school hall. Theystayed for three days before leaving the school in the early morning of 23rd December 1941”, recalled Brother Paul.

Mr. Chye Kooi Loong said the British Battalion was an ad hoc formation created on 20 December 1941 during the Battleof Malaya. It was amalgamated from two regular British Army battalions, 2nd Battalion, East Surreys Regiment under Lieut.Col. G E Swinton MC and 1st Battalion, The Leicestershire Regiment under Lieut. Col. Charles Esmond Morrison, OBE.

Both battalions suffered heavy casualties in North West Malaya during the early stages of the Japanese invasion so itwas decided to amalgamate the two battalions. The British Battalion was commanded by Lieut. Col. Morrison; Lieut.Col. Swinton was badly wounded during the Battle of Jitra. The battalion fought with great courage, taking manycasualties and earning much respect from other units. They were involved in fierce fighting during the Battle of Kampar(30 December 1941–2 January 1942), before joining in the fighting retreat back to Singapore. The Battalion was alsoinvolved in the short but fierce in Singapore. They surrendered to the Japanese along with other units of the BritishArmy under General Arthur Percival in February 1942. The annual Open Day at St Michael's marks one of the most important yearly events. Parents or guardiansare encouraged to discuss with the respective form teachers or the school administrators about theirchildren's welfare and academic performance. Besides getting to know about the school more, parentscould also get to know how their children spend their time in school. This year, as usual, the event was carried out for both morning and afternoon session. Parents were seenadvising and encouraging their children while teachers took the opportunity to know and understand thechildren more through the parents and guardians. Students looked cheerful and optimistic. Parents, on theother hand, thanked our educators for a job well done. After a brief session of pure interaction, manywalked away happily, holding with pride the academic report cards the parents just signed. We had good turnout this year and we expect the same the following year.

Twenty five Michaelians, all Form Two students, left for Ulu Kenas Recreational Forest in Kuala Kangsar, Perak for a time forgreat outdoor adventure. It was an all-time favourite programme for these young boys as they would be embarked on a 3-day,two-night outdoor adventure camp with their friends and fellow Lasallian trainers. The program, which was organised by the youth section of La Salle Centre, Ipoh, was tailored to the needs of these participants, ranging from character building activities to team building dynamics, games, jungle trekking and motivational sessions. The organizers, who doubled up as trainers as well, are all working people and full time university students who took time offjust to ensure the success of the program.LEAD was held for the first time in June 2002. It was an initiative by the Malaysian delegation who participated in APLYC 6(Sydney) 2001, where they learnt about this idea from the Australian delegation.Besides the boys from St. Michael’s, students from other Lasallian schools in Perak are also involved in the program – St. George’sTaiping and St. Anthony’s Teluk Intan.LEAD is a program for character building and self-development. Participants were treated with respect and the activities focusedon building self-esteem and self-worth.We thank Mr Isaac Stephen, the program director for creating an opportunity for the students to learn, socialise and interact.St. Michael’s acknowledges the strong support of Ms Juliana Devadason, Chairman of Riverview Rubber Estates Berhad and MrAdrian Tsen, the president of the Old Michaelians Association for sponsoring the entire program financially.By Chan Kah Ying

Datuk Brother Vincent Corkery, Bishop Sebastian Francis, Tan Sri-Tan Sri and Puan Sri-PuanSri, Datuk-Datuk, Datin-Datin, Mr. Chairman and to the distinguished guests gathered herein this chamber, it is my greatest pleasure and honour to stand before you on this festiveoccasion. I am especially grateful to Mrs. Foo whose exceptional generosity andcommendable affection for the youth granted me this rare privilege to address all of you.

Dear Guests,

I stand before you on this occasion of solidarity as a grateful Michaelian who endeavoursto charm a lovely man who has been exceptionally artful in embracing the evening of hisdignified days. While we remain gathered here in this oasis of peace, certainties andcomfort, I believe our time is indeed one that is marked by the gathering clouds of adistant storm. However, as history has consistently shown, it is during times like these

that great men and women whose ideas and ideals stand the test of time are born.

One such great person I have the honour of knowing and working with is Brother Vincent Corkery, whose birthday is oneof celebration for us all. I sincerely believe that we are indeed united in the common yet resolute belief that he is a manwho commands the sublime virtues that have accompanied many great men and women up the winding stairs of glory.

In my context, fate and its unfolding which was both appealing and defining granted me the honour of working withBrother Vincent through my days in the Michaelian Editorial Board. Being tasked with writing about the school’s historyfor the school magazine, I was led to the gardens and chambers of the La Salle Centre, where I would intermittentlyseek Brother Vincent’s guidance and support.

It was during those extraordinary moments that I grew to appreciate his virtues such as the subtlety of his mannerisms, the plurality of his intellectual pursuits, his eagerness to embrace the new while perfecting the old and above all hismastery of both the written and the spoken word. To me and many others as well he wields language like a scalpel, being able to cut straight through a cacophony of complicated emotions at ease. As a consequence, I can proudly saythat Brother Vincent remains one of the most illuminating and inspiring figures I have ever met throughout my 19years of earthly existence.

Ladies and gentlemen,

The annals of humanity whether in the distant days of antiquity or in the present days of modernity, are littered with examplesof great men and women who were once icons and heroes of their times being hostages to the very unfolding of history’stemperament and its accompanying judgements. But in the case of Brother Vincent, we need not worry for history will castits verdict on him in ways that will be the envy of many. Perhaps, he will be most remembered for bringing a newsummit of justice and equality to SMI, an extraordinary feat accomplished by his dignified retirement of class streamingaccording to academic abilities and its replacement with mixed ability classes during his years as Director of SMI.

Behind this historic validation of justice was the restoration of the very pride of the student for he or she would not haveto pursue the bitter battles against the will of fate for all talents whether academic or non academic are all sacrosanct andinalienable in their own distinct ways. In many ways he will be remembered by the generations of tomorrow and thestewards of the distant future as a powerful and enlightening testimony to the wonders of what an individual can do.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

On a lighter note, I must say that I am absolutely convinced thatBrother Vincent’s magnetism will remain the envy of many menincluding the young like myself for he is known to be angelic in theeyes of many women. Sometimes I wish that the heavens had beenkinder to me on this one, however out of fairness, the heavens wereright because Sanjay will never be in possession of Brother Vincent’ssteely and commendable discipline.

So,Dearest Brother Vincent may the kindness you radiate always find itsway back to you and with that Happy Birthday Brother and may theyears ahead be of constant warmth and joy. May God bless you BrotherVincent and may God bless all of us. Thank you so much.

• MADAM LOH WEI SENGAn INTERVIEW WITH

Madam Loh Wei Seng was born on the 8th ofFebruary 1955, in Ipoh. The 5th among 9 siblings, she received her early education at Gopeng,Perak. She is a Michaelian as she did her Form6 in St. Michael’s Institution. She was theprincipal of SMK St. Bernadette’s Convent, SMKMain Convent Ipoh, SMK Seri KeledangMenglembu before becoming the principal of St.Michael’s Institution.

Can you please briefly tell us about your daysas a student in SMI.Frankly, I consider myself to be very luckybecause it was not easy to get a place in Form6 those days. I was one of the 11 girls from Ave Maria Convent qualified to do Form 6 in SMI. Iwas a student librarian, Committee member of the Sixth Form Council and the school netball player.I had to work very hard to juggle between study and co-curricular activities. Despite that, I enjoyedmy days as a student in SMI. I really treasure those sweet memories in SMI.

Why did you choose teaching as your profession?I taught my younger sister how to read when I was six years old. I felt very happy each time shecould read what I taught her. From then on I developed the passion for teaching.

Please tell us about your career in the education service.I started my career as a Chemistry and Mathematics teacher. As I developed betteradministration skills, I was promoted as the Senior Assistant in SMK Doktor Megat Khas, Ipohafter 12 years of teaching in the same school. After 5 years, I was posted to SMK St. Bernadette’sConvent, Batu Gajah for another 7 years before I was promoted as the principal there. After1 year, I was posted to be the principal of SMK Main Convent, Ipoh. I was there for 4 and ahalf years. Then I was in SMK Seri Keledang, Menglembu as the principal for 10 months beforecoming to SMI in August 2011.

What has been the biggest challenge for you to adapt to since becoming the first ladyprincipal of SMI?The biggest challenge is for me to be accepted by others because generally people expect to see amale principal in a boys’ school. I have to work hard to prove that women are also capable ofbeing a leader in a boys’ school.

What was the most challenging task that you had to tackle so far as the principal? To instill self-discipline among the boys.

What was your first impression on SMI that sets us apart from other schools? It is a well-known and well-established school set up by the La Salle Brothers.
