The ‘Hay’day ofBarn Dances
A barn, some music and a hostof friends and family are all themakings for the social gatheringknown as a barn dance.
This tradition originated inrural Europe in the 1800s as aninformal version of fancy upper-class balls. Immigrants broughtthe custom to America. Held tocelebrate a special occasion suchas a barn raising, wedding or theend of harvest season, barn danceswere often attended by the entirecommunity. Folks of all agesgathered in a large barn tosocialize, eat and dance to thelively music of a band.
Over time, barn dances beganto feature a caller, a person whohollered out dance steps to directthe crowd into organizedmovements. Square dancing andcountry line dancing have closeties to these rural celebrations.
Barn dances declined by theturn of the 20th century, but radiois credited with their revival in the1920s, most notably the weeklybroadcast of the WSM BarnDance. The Nashville-based radioshow played country music andlater evolved into the GrandOle Opry.
You can still find communitiesthat host barn dances for peopleto kick up their heels.
