What will I study?In your first year of study you will examine sources of oil and gas and patterns of their consumption in a globalising world. You will be introduced to methods of electricity and power production and better understand the economic and business environment.

Your second year provides you with opportunities to analyse petroleum technologies and compare hydrocarbon, nuclear and renewable sources of energy. By coupling this knowledge to an understanding of global economic issues, and an ability to identify hazards and assess risk, you will be able to evaluate energy policy. You will then have the opportunity to supplement these skills with those necessary to secure and succeed on an industrial work placement.

MA International RelationsOil and Gas Security RouteIntroductionAccess to secure sources of energy is a vital requirement for governments and ensuring that access is a key goal for policy formulators. How governments secure access to oil and gas, using both the diplomacy of soft power and the coercion of hard power, is a core issue in contemporary international relations. At the same time, the size and transnational reach of the major companies involved in oil and gas exploitation poses questions about the relevance of the state in the current international system.

The oil and gas security route examines the theoretical concerns of international relations in the context of the practical realities of the oil and gas sector, in the areas of geo-political competition, environmental impact and the future of the industry.

MSc Oil and Gas EngineeringIntroductionThe oil and gas industry is continuously developing and is therefore both recognised and expected to remain as a major contributor to the economy of many developed and developing regions as it continues to be driven not only by new oil and gas discoveries, but by a constant demand to find newer, safer, more efficient and cost-effective ways of extracting resources. Whilst exploration continues to globally identify major oil and gas finds, these are increasingly less accessible and require complex engineering solutions to deliver effective operations and supply. Additionally, the significant and rising operating costs of existing installations is driving the sector to seek suitably qualified engineers who are able to support operations and initiate improvements within the four main strands of oil and gas facilities: offshore, onshore, sub-sea and pipelines.

How will this course improve my career prospects?The production, distribution, refining and retailing of petroleum, taken as a whole, represents one of the world’s largest industries in terms of dollar value. There are well over 100 countries involved in the extraction of primary materials for the energy sector on every continent. To experience working within the oil and gas industry you will participate in a simulation, involving a fictitious country where you will build a gas pipeline working with many stakeholders. These include: government ministers; global investors; international and regional oil exploration companies; local and international media; Non-Government Organisations and local citizens.
