This October, I’m scheduled to venture to the country of Cuba for study and continuing education. Why the country of Cuba? One: Presbyterian witness in Cuba began in 1890. The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) continues the tradition of Christian support through our partner church and mission personnel. Two: through continuing efforts, Road Scholar (see footnote below) has opened doors in “person-to-person” educational experiences in Cuba since doors were “opened” for travel over 20 years ago. Three: The island has experienced a religious revival of sorts in the past 25 years, as the demise of Soviet totalitarianism has made room for a tropical Marxism that is less than total, but still highly controlling. Cuba was never a deeply pious country in the cloth of some other Latin American nations, but the church, through many denominations, has come a long way from the 1960s and 70s when Fidel Castro’s revolution sent religious believers to labor camps and enshrined atheism in the constitution. Highlights (though not a complete listing) for this experience include: a presentation on the history of U.S./Cuban relations from an expert in the field; a visit to their Holocaust Museum, that sits within the beautiful Sephardic Synagogue; a full-day field trip to Trinidad, one of the original Spanish Settlements and a UNESCO World Heritage Site; a walking field trip to explore the historic plazas of Old Havana, a UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site; a presentation by an expert in gender studies and sociology, on women in Cuba that will provide perspectives on women in today’s Cuban society; and much more. (Road Scholar is an American not-for-profit organization that provides educational travel tours. From its founding in 1975, Road Scholar has offered study tours throughout the United States and Canada and in approximately 150 other countries.) Blessings,
Religious Revival in Unusual Locations
Covenant announces a new service of Give+, a Vanco product, which provides a complete range of payment solutions for religious organizations. Give+ offers the services of text, mobile or online giving. You can go to Covenant’s website and click on the “Give” webpage to view a short video of how each Give+ platform (online, mobile, text) works. The first time you use Give+ you must register your account. Once that’s complete, giving is just a click away! No more writing checks or remembering your envelope on Sunday morning. It’s easy, safe and secure electronic giving. https://covenantscranton.org/give/ You can also use the QR code to take you directly to the Give page. Your phone must have a QR code reader application to use this. Text giving is also available at 570-363-4324. Welcome Envelopes You may or may not have noticed that Covenant has new Welcome envelopes in each pew. A line has been added that reads: “I give online.” These envelopes can be used on Sunday mornings if you get that feeling that you should be placing something in the offering plate even though you may give electronically. Just check the box and place the envelope in the offering plate. We understand that not everyone may be comfortable with electronic giving—and that’s OK! Covenant church’s goal is to make giving as easy as possible for everyone no matter how you choose to give. Please feel free to ask church staff any questions you may have about giving online through Give+.
