The 2013-14 school year was a great one, and one that is sure to be remembered by most as a year of celebrations.

Thanks to all of you, our Cove Community, we ended the fifth year of our strategic plan strongly and were able to begin planning for a new beginning. The successes we shared during the past five years were nothing less than remarkable and were only made possible through the extreme generosity of this extraordinary community.

The annual funds we raised each year, along with our Cove @65 Campaign, were able to support initiatives like our state of the art technology program, our new health and fitness center, a rubberized running track and new irrigated field, an enhanced transition program that specializes in individualized internships and post-secondary placements, stronger instructional supports, and expanded community relationships who embrace our mission and continuously partner with us to provide a quality education for students with disabilities throughout the Chicago area.

As a result of these efforts and the hard work of our amazing staff, our enrollment reached capacity in the spring and now includes a waiting list as well.

The current financial hardships at the state and federal levels remain a threat to our funding and are risks to the progress we must make for the students and families who need it most. Like our students, the dedicated team at Cove is determined to surpass any obstacles we face, and are deeply grateful to our Community for the many ways you have been there for us.

All of the gifts that were given to Cove last year are important to us. Each dollar counts and contributes to the strength we must have to support our students during these difficult educational times.

Each of you has our sincere thanks for the countless gifts you have provided to our school. We thank you for your donations, for your trust, and for your ongoing commitment to make a difference for those with disabilities.

With Much Gratitude,

Sally L. Sover, Ed.D.Executive Director

Dear Cove Family and Friends:

Page 4: Cove Annual Report 2013-14

2013- 2014 marked the final year of The Cove School’s five year Strategic Plan. Through rigor-ous execution of the plan, Cove has strengthened the educational experience of every student and positioned itself as a strong leader in the field of learning disabilities and in the greater educational community.

In the plan, the following six focus areas were identified as critically important to the future of The Cove School:

• Program• Transition• Faculty• School of Choice• Fiscal Integrity• Governance

There was much growth at Cove over the last five years. A few highlights from 2013-2014 school year included:

• A 1:1 laptop program was initiated in the Junior High, which added to the 1:1 laptop program that already existed in the high school.

• Art therapy was initiated.

• Cove’s fitness program was brought to new heights with the addition of a trainer on staff, an individualized fitness program for students, and a state-of-the-art fitness center for students and staff.

• After school programs and clubs increased for all students. Opportunities such as soccer, track and field, bowling, computer programming, robotics, dance and “School of Rock” gave more Cove students the chance to take risks and discover their passions.

• Partnerships with businesses and foundations were established and expanded. Some examples of these include: Astellas USA Foundation, LYFE Kitchen, Grane Transportation, Mesirow Financial, Ravinia Festival, Di Pescara, Morelia Supermarket, Motorola Mobility Foundation, American Chemet Corporation, Eyes on the Lake, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Norton Agency, BMO Harris Bank, Winston & Strawn LLP, Northbrook Chamber of Commerce, Quality One Wireless, Seyfarth Shaw, Rosecrance, Queue Marketing Group, UPS, Cozzini Bros.,Mercedes Benz of Chicago, LobsterGram, HCI Equity Partners, hyconnect, Dykema, Zen of Slow Cooking, Trader Joe’s, TJ Maxx, and more.

A new, 5 year Strategic Plan for The Cove School will launch in 2014-2015. The fundamental belief in a highly individualized education within a safe and nurturing environment remains the cornerstone of Cove’s mission and provides the basis for the strength in the program.

Strategic Planning

Page 5: Cove Annual Report 2013-14

The Cove School’s student body has always been reflective of the reality that learning disabilities affect children from all economic backgrounds. The cost of private tuition for those who do not receive support from their local school districts is prohibitive for many families. Additionally, many families find it a hardship to pay for hot lunches, field trips, after-school sports and activities.

To enable all students to fully participate in the school’s pro-grams, Cove raises dollars through events and grants directed to a need-based Scholarship and Financial Aid Fund. Each year, Cove families also have the opportunity help one another by donating to the Sharing Fund.

Two of Cove’s community events have a specific focus on scholarship and financial aid. At the 2014 Annual Benefit, over a dozen Cove High School students volunteered, selling buttons for a game of “Heads or Tails. “This effort raised

approximately $10,000 for need-based tuition scholarships. “One Step at a Time,” Cove’s third annual 5K Run and Walk, was held on Saturday, June 21, 2014 on the beautiful trails of the Skokie Lagoons Forest Preserve in Winnetka. Over 200 runners and walkers, 30 volunteers and 10 corporate sponsors participated in this chip-timed race. Over $16,000 was raised and allocated to scholarship and financial aid.

The Siragusa Foundation has supported Cove since 1986, providing much needed assistance to families in need of tuition assistance at Cove. The Siragusa Foundation works in partner-ship with organizations, communities and other philanthropic entities to connect those in need to services, bridge people to opportunities, and engage them as valued individuals in a car-ing society with the purpose of fulfilling basic needs, enhanc-ing quality of life and fostering a sense of community.

The Cove @65 Campaign was launched in 2012 and raised

$1.45 million to expand key program areas at the school. To enable all Cove students to fully participate in the school’s programs, the campaign supplemented the school’s current Scholarship and Financial Aid Fund and Sharing Fund with an allocation of $100,000 over three years.

Students with learning disabilities throughout the Chicago area receive an intensive, individualized program in a supportive environment at Cove. The high ratio of teachers, therapists and specialists to students, their level of professional training and the social/emotional support that students receive makes The Cove School a unique and vital institution in the community. Families who cannot afford the cost of the Cove program rely on the charitable support of the Scholarship and Financial Aid Fund. Beginning in 2014-15, Cove’s next Strategic Plan will include a specific focus on growing the financial aid pool and regularly evaluating its ability to meet the needs of families.

“Each day I hear of the pain that comes from families far and wide who

are endlessly fighting and urgently seeking a path, a star, their North Star,

to break the cycle of despair and failure that students with disabilities can

face, and to guide their way toward a future of promise and a lifetime of

purpose.

The families who are at Cove and who are here tonight know firsthand of

the fear they share, and know that we, as a community, must stay strong

in our resolve to continuously build awareness, fight the fight that others

cannot, and to spread the word that there is a way.”

– Dr. Sally L. Sover, Executive Director

“Follow Your Star” Benefit 2014

“Follow Your Star,” The Cove School Annual Benefit took place on Saturday, Febru-

ary 22, 2014 at the InterContinental Chicago O’Hare. The event raised a net total

of nearly $420,000 for Cove.

The Prism Award is presented each year at the Benefit to an individual or individu-

als who have shown or created remarkable transformation within The Cove School

community. This year’s Prism Award recipients were Michael and Nydia Searle.

Dr. Sally L. Sover, Executive Director presented the award to Michael and Nydia,

parents of a Cove alumni.

In her speech, Dr. Sover remarked, “Mike and Nydia’s transformational impact at

Cove will exponentially influence the future of each Cove student and the field of

learning disabilities. Their commitment has been nothing less than extraordinary

and the impact they have made is nothing less than remarkable.”

The event broke two of its own records in the areas of the silent auction, which

raised over $65,000 and a paddle raise which raised $148,000. The live auction

total was the second highest in Cove’s history, raising nearly $112,000.

Corporate sponsors once again played a significant role in the success of the

event, raising over $65,000. Cove is grateful to all those who supported the event

and believe that every child has the right to learn and reach their own potential.
