AKC ANNOUNCES AGILITY COURSE TEST The AKC Agility Department is excited to announce the launch of a new, beginning level agility program called ACT (Agility Course Test). The ACT program officially launches on March 1, 2016. This program is designed to introduce beginning dogs and handlers to the sport of agility. There are two classes – ACT 1 and ACT2. “…” In addition to preparing for these introductory classes, exhibitors will learn to do things such as to enter an AKC event, check-in at the ring, prepare for their run, and handle their dog while under judgment. We hope that clubs and trainers will use these classes as learning experiences. There are several elements of the ACT program that are different from AKC Agility Trials.

Eligibility to enter: This program is for dogs that do not have an AKC Agility title at the Novice level or higher. Dogs may enter ACT2 without having an ACT1 title. Dogs that are not registered/listed with the AKC may participate and their performance will be recorded under a temporary recording number. Owners will receive a letter from the AKC explaining how they can register their dogs. Application to be listed as a Canine Partner may be accepted at the test and submitted with the results.

Judges/Evaluators: All AKC agility judges may judge the ACT classes. In addition we will be setting up a system for trainers and experienced participants to become ACT evaluators. Evaluators may judge ACT classes. There will be an application, online test and nominal fee to become an evaluator. More information about becoming an ACT evaluator will be available “…”

Holding ACT events: Any AKC agility judge/ACT evaluator may hold a stand-alone ACT event. The event does not have to be held by an AKC licensed club. AKC agility clubs may hold ACT events in conjunction with their trials if they desire.

Jump Heights: No jump height card is required to enter an ACT class. Handlers are encouraged to have their dogs jump at the appropriate height that will help them prepare for AKC Agility trials.

Event Applications: Clubs or judges/evaluators do not need to file an application for ACT events; there will be no application fee. A $5.00 per entry recording fee for all dogs entered will be submitted with the results.

Courses: Evaluators and judges will need to submit their courses for review; however, courses may be reused, which we encourage for ease of administration.

Titles: Dogs must receive two passing scores to earn each of the ACT titles. Dogs are required to be fully registered/listed in order to be awarded a title.

There will be an ACT page on the AKC website where forms and information can be accessed. We have also set up a mailbox for the ACT program [email protected]. ACT related questions can be sent to this mailbox. Please see the regulations and other information as it becomes available on the ACT web page that can be accessed through the Agility Home Page. We are looking forward to working with clubs, trainers and evaluators to introduce new exhibitors to the sport of agility. The AKC Agility Department

February 2016 Summer of Love Dear Fellow Scottie Fanciers, The Scottish Terrier Club of California will hold its 83rd Annual Specialty on Sunday, 19 June, 2016.

Fri., 24 June – Kennel Club of Beverly Hills Sat., 25 June – Long Beach Kennel Club Sun., 26 June - The STCC Specialty held in conjunction with The Great Western Terrier Association Your participation of generously donating to the STCC Trophy Fund in the past has enabled us to select much appreciated trophies to be awarded at our annual Specialty. This year will be no different. We invite your generosity so we may have a fine day on the George Allen Field at Cal State Long Beach.

ALL DONATIONS WILL BE GRATEFULLY ACKNOWLEDGED IN THE CATALOGUE. In the past, we have accepted donations for placements in each class. However, we have now established the STCC Trophy Donation Fund that can be contributed to throughout the year. At present we are holding a raffle of a beautifully handmade quilt made by our very own Cheryl Schaeffer! Other items up for raffle are shown on the following flier (entry tickets are on the reverse side of the flier). By participating in the raffle, you are donating to the STCC Trophy Fund. If you do not wish to participate in the raffle, you may still donate to the STCC Trophy Fund by sending your gratefully appreciated donations to Cheryl Schaeffer at the address at the bottom of this page. The trophy fund deadline is March 20, 2016. Donations will be listed in the order of their receipt. Please make your cheque out to S.T.C.C. (Scottish Terrier Club of California). Additional donations will be gratefully appreciated. The Trophy Fund accepts donations throughout the year now. We are trying a new format so that you don’t have to spend so much money near the Specialty time when so many other financial requirements are upon us (Dinners, Lunches, Entries, etc.). ALL donations, large or small, are wholeheartedly & truly appreciated! Your donation will be acknowledged in the catalogue. A couple of dollars will even help us towards paying for the trophies for this prestigious event. With sincere thanks, Jacki Forkel and Cheryl Schaeffer - Trophy Fund Co-Chairs 2418 S. Our little Scottie girl, Kylie, who is two years old and was bailed out of one of the San Bernardino County shelters has been with us about a month now. I wrote about her last month and she is not yet ready for adoption although we have some very qualified adopters waiting for Scotties right now. Kylie has very serious leash aggression issues, i.e., when walking h e r i n o u r n e i g h b o r h o o d , should another dog get in her line of vision no matter how far away, she throws what some might call a major hissy fit. W e h a d another Scottie last Fall that did the same thing, only with Piper it not only included dogs and cats, but also people just out for a stroll with no dogs on leashes. We interviewed several trainers that specialize in dog aggression, checked with several other rescue groups that had used this type of trainer and chose one in West Los Angeles. After just two weeks Piper showed huge progress and she came home and was adopted a short time later to a home with a male Scottie and has become "one fantastic and fun Scottie," according to her new mom's latest email. We are keeping our fingers crossed that Kylie will make a similar and quick turn around. She is not aggressive toward people at all as Piper was on walks. In fact she wants everyone she sees to pet her and starts bouncing off the end of her leash begging for pets. Another thing that Kylie does ... and many other rescued Scotties have done while here awaiting a home ... is continue to look for their former owners ... and it always deeply touches my heart when it happens. On walks, anytime someone opens a front door as we pass by, or a car pulls up and parks, or Kylie spies a distant walker, especially if it is a woman ... she stares and stares and stares ... until she decides it is not her former owner. This is my take on it and after a month Kylie is still doing it.

agree to be enrolling her in a basic obedience class very quickly. Otherwise, Kylie is absolutely charming, is housebroken, isn't yappy, practically turns summersaults as she leads the way to her feeding area for breakfast and dinner ... and loves, loves, loves to sit on your lap and fall asleep. After the socialization classes, unless there is significant improvement, Kylie will then go to the West Los Angeles training facility. The Clark County Las Vegas Scottie that I wrote about last month, that we were all but sure we were getting, was bailed out by his owner, just twenty minutes before the deadline for owner pickup. Our Las Vegas helper was already at the shelter waiting for the 1 PM bail out time. It leaves one wondering why people would wait, in his case, three days before coming to get him. Still, I love to see a Scottie go back to his owner, with the fervent hope that he is being well taken care of and won't end up in doggie jail again. W e h a v e another little guy on the horizon who will come to us from his owners, a senior couple who are both ill, one with dementia. It is heartbreaking for them to give Bryce up but they feel they have no other choice. They are moving in with their adult child who has two dogs that don't get along with him. We'll see what happens next. With Rescue, you never really know what is coming down the pike next, as everything can turn upside in a heartbeat. SPECIAL THANK YOU’S to:Alex and Dr. Heather Chang, and Donna and Betty Maynes. Your generosity is deeply appreciated and enables us to continue taking the best possible care of our rescued Scotties.

For any of you that may wonder, YES, I think dogs truly have their own way of grieving for a former home, even though they adjust very well, and in the case of Scotties, quite quickly to their new family once adopted. There have only been three Scotties in my 30 years of Rescue that actually skipped a meal on the day their owner relinquished them to us, and all three ate like champs the second day they were here. Kylie also has two other significant habits that are very worrisome. She can climb high fences and she knows how to back out of a martingale collar while on a walk. My home is fenced with 5.5 foot high block walls along with two 6 foot high wooden gates. However, my front yard is enclosed with a rock wall 36" high ... with 30" high wrought iron on top of the rock. No Scottie has ever gotten out of our front yard except for Kylie who ran next door to sniff under our neighbor's gate at their dog... the one and only time she climbed out. I was hot on her heels and now, of course, she no longer gets front yard time at all. She doesn't climb my block walls, but does chew on the bottoms of my two wooden gates, which have metal sheeting 30" high that line the gate bottoms. She can climb trellises as if they are a ladder and also 48" high exercise pens as if they also are a ladder. In her previous home she must have learned how to back out of a collar, but martingale type collars really surprised me. On our daily walks if something grabs her interest, such as a cat snoozing under a parked car, she'll lag behind me a little bit and if I give a tug she has her head lowered level with her backbone and if I were to give another tug, she'd be out of the martingale. I've not seen this with any other Scottie. She now walks with two collars, attached to each other with a coupler ... for safety. As you can imagine, once we hopefully get Kylie's leash aggression issues solved, she will need to have a home without chain link fencing or wrought iron fencing and her adoptive family will also

Watch Your Dog’s Weight! (Excerpt from Puppy Feeding Fundamentals  by Erika Mansourian, AKC  Nov 17, 2015)

There’s a saying in canine feeding: Watch the dog, not the dish. Body condition, not the amount eaten or left in the bowl, should determine portion sizes and meal frequencies. Portion sizes depend on individual metabolism and body type, and nutritional requirements vary from dog to dog. If your puppy occasionally skips a meal or picks at food, don’t worry. It could mean she is ready to eliminate a feeding or that you have given her too much, in which case simply reduce the quantity served.
