INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING THIS CSSD TRAINING CALENDAR AND WEBSITE

Welcome!

This booklet is the CSSD Training Calendar for January-June 2013. This new calendar of classes is found online and can be accessed through the Training Calendar website, https://cssd.ctclearinghouse.org/. If you have saved this URL as a “favorite”, you may have to re-enter it into your browser in order to see the current calendar as new information is added often.

Please note: Only 3 calendar months of the Training Calendar are visible at a time with a start date of the 1st of each month for the 3-month period.

We would encourage you to become familiar with the CSSD registration system and online catalog of courses. The most current version of the catalog will always be online.

If you wish to register all students online under one supervisor’s name, you may use the same email address for multiple students but each student must create their own student account and have a unique password. Please keep a list of passwords at your office. If you forget a password, call Wheeler Clinic at 860-793-2164 and tell them that you have a CSSD-related question.

When a student signs up for a class online, he/she should be sure to click on the “complete” button on the last registration screen. If that isn’t done, the student is not registered and will not receive an email confirmation.

If your staff members do not have access to computers, you may copy the faxable “student account” form in this calendar, fill one out for each student and fax it to Wheeler Clinic at 860-793-9813. Each student will be registered by Wheeler staff and a confirmation will be faxed to you if you do not have access to email.

Also, those without computers will be able to register for classes by phone (instructions are found on page 3 of the calendar). A confirmation/notification email address or fax number must be given. If a student or his/her supervisor can’t be contacted by email; the fax or phone number given to Wheeler Clinic will be used to notify you about canceled classes, etc.

If your staff members haven’t registered as students yet, please have them do so as soon as possible. This is the only way to register for the CSSD required and recommended classes found in this calendar. Please call Wheeler Clinic at 860-793-2164 if you have questions about registration.

We have included directions to all of the sites where these fall classes will be offered. Directions are also available online. Please do not use MapQuest or GPS for these sites.

Please remember, if a student cannot attend a class, Wheeler Clinic should be notified as soon as possible by email or phone. There are often waiting lists to get into classes and as much notice as possible is helpful to notify other potential students.

Thank you for your interest and cooperation.

Adolescent Development: The Parent-Teen Relationship

A strong understanding of adolescent development is crucial to effective family treatment. However, psycho-education alone is not enough. We will identify how to integrate a solid foundation of knowledge about physical, cognitive (brain changes), and social emotional development in to the treatment of high risk teens and parents. Three major areas that are critical to the teen-parent relationship are connection, monitoring, and psychological autonomy. We will discuss styles of parenting as well as tips for parents, and providers. Additionally, we will discuss, through case examples, how drug use derails adolescent development and its implications within a family.

Motivational Interviewing 3-day training

This 3-day training course is focused on developing the foundational skills of the Motivational Interviewing (MI) approach. Motivation is a key factor in people changing difficult and intractable human problems such as alcohol and drug dependence, persistent criminal lifestyle choices, intimate partner violence, and disruptive behavior disorders in youth. MI is currently the most scientifically supported approach for motivating people with difficult-to-change problems. Participants will become familiar with the basic theory of MI, practice client centered counseling skills, and learn to

12

recognize, elicit, and reinforce key client verbalizations likely to lead to an effective plan for changing self-defeating behaviors. In addition, participants will receive feedback on a real world work sample in order to assess their own MI competency. Through a series of structured learning activities that include role-plays, ‘real’-plays, video demonstrations, and small group exercises, participants will develop and improve core skills so that they can immediately apply Motivational Interviewing in their own work settings. Important to note: (1) Audio recorded work sample is required for day 3. Details will be provided during the training, (2) For AIC staff this training meets the requirements for an introductory course in MI and is similar to the one offered through the AIC calendar.

Vicarious Trauma - Managing the Flames without Getting Scorched

Vicarious Trauma occurs when the service provider experiences various symptoms as a result of their attempts to assist the client. The most common term used to describe vicarious trauma is “burn out”. Vicarious trauma can occur swiftly after a single event or can build up over years as the service provider continues to bare witness to the adversity that

15

their clients face. The impacts of vicarious trauma are often unconscious and in that way can be building to a crisis point without the individual being aware of the damage that is being caused.

When Pink and Blue Are Not Enough -part 1- Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Youth

**Part 1 - beginner**

NOTE: This is a beginner class which must be taken prior to taking Part 2.

Either/or. Male/female. Black/white. Much of our society, and as a result, the systems within it, live as if the world exists in binary form. The “both/and” identities inherit in transgender, gender-variant and gender-fluid youth often send the child welfare systems – especially Court Support Services and Juvenile Justice Systems - reeling. As a result, children are placed according to their genitals, not their gender. This interactive, half-day workshop will include relevant videos, exercises and activities. The workshop will help participants: Differentiate between orientation and gender; Develop a working understanding of gender variance; Identify the critical issues and obstacles that trans youth face; Brainstorm strategies for reconciling the gaps in competent services for these children within CSSD.
