W hen Washington National Golf Club opened in August of 2000, it became the new home for the Husky Golf team. Thanks to a sponsorship agreement between Washington National and the University, the course features a distinctive Husky brand, from the golf carts, to flag sticks, to its company logo. University faculty, staff and students are entitled to special discounted fees at Washington National. Five sets of tees (Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior and Husky) stretch the course from 5,117 yards to 7,304 yards. The course was selected for the site of the 2002 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships and the 2003 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Regionals, and hosted the 2006 Division I Women’s Regionals. The Husky Golf Practice Facility, located on the back of the driving range at Washington National, is a major reason for the success of Washington’s men’s and women’s golf programs. The facility is dedicated exclusively for the use of the two teams, allowing them to practice independently and par- ticipate in team activities that aren’t possible at other facilities. This allows the Husky coaches to create appropriate playing conditions in preparation for upcoming events and allows them to work on specific skills. The range tee at the practice facility is 70 yards wide and 35 yards deep. There are numerous target greens, all of which are shaped like real greens and seeded with the same bent grass as the greens on the course. With the size of the tee and the location of these greens the teams can practice at any yardage with their wedges. The facility also features two large greens used for putting, chipping, and bunker play. They are well-conditioned and excellent for practicing the short game. In case of an occasional rain, the facility has a movable cover that up to five golfers can practice under. This allows the Huskies to hit off of real grass and be dry no matter what the weather. When the weather is nice, Husky golfers enjoy breathtaking views of Mt. Rainier. Truly a one-of-a kind resource, the Husky Golf Practice Facility at Washington National provides Husky golfers with the preparation they need to succeed at the highest levels of collegiate golf. Seattle Golf Club Seattle, Wash.

Seattle Golf Club: Seattle Golf Club has hosted the Walker Cup and Pacific Coast Amateur and will host the 2009 Pac-10 Championships. We have the course almost entirely to ourselves on Monday. Huge trees line every fairway. Learning how to curve the ball both ways and to position your tee shots to set up the next shot into greens is crucial at Seattle Golf Club.

Overlake Golf and Country ClubBellevue, Wash.

Overlake Golf Club: Overlake has the smallest trees of our home courses, but has the most punishing rough. It is a classic old course. The holes offer a great variety and the greens are wonderfully-conditioned always. Overlake has hosted the Washington State Open, PNGA Men’s Amateur and others.

The Members Club at AldarraFall City, Wash.

The Members Club at Aldarra:Less than 10 years old, the Tom Fazio-de-signed Aldarra offers a much different (modern) look from our other courses. It was built on the Boeing family’s old farm, and is considered our toughest course by most members of the team. The fairways are all bent grass and the course stays perfectly dry all year. The Par threes are brutally tough and you must be able to hit it long and straight to compete at the visually intimidating Aldarra.

CoachThurmond:We play a different private club in Seattle every day of the week and can play Washington National any time. Each offers its own set of chal-lenges that requires the development of certain skills. If you play each of our courses on Monday thru Friday, you will see 90 different tee shots and 90 different greens. You learn how to think on these courses, and how to hit all the shots.

Inglewood Golf ClubKenmore, Wash.

Inglewood Golf Club: The first two holes at Inglewood remind you that it is important to work out as these two uphill par fives will leave you gasping for air. Inglewood is, in fact, a par 73 course. The trees are massive. More than any other course, Inglewood teaches us to hit off of uphill, downhill, and side-hill lies. Players from the Northwest are generally good at this because of great courses like Inglewood.

Broadmoor Golf Club:Historical Broadmoor has hosted many of golf’s greatest players over the years in tournaments. From the ninth fairway you can see Husky Stadium and on game day those playing Broadmoor can hear the fans and band from the football game. Our players learn how to control their distance and spin with their irons and wedges at Broadmoor. The soft and fast greens demand skills that most junior golfers don’t possess. They learn it here.

FRIDAY

“We use every type of facility needed to become a great player. We have spectacular courses, an amazing practice facility and an indoor training center on campus. The variety of facilities gives us the opportunity to develop every area of our golf games. As a whole, our courses demand accuracy and creativity off the tees, excellent distance and spin control into greens, and an ability to get up and down around small and fast greens. There is a reason players from the Northwest can play well anywhere in the world. “ - Head Coach Matt Thurmond
