ICP FACULTY SPOTLIGHTMaggie Steber
An accomplished documentary photographer, Maggie Steber has spent the last three decades covering stories of underrep-resented people around the world. Her work has been widely published and collected, and she has received numerous awards, including a 2017–18 Guggenheim Foundation grant. Steber has also worked as a photo editor and instructor, and has been teaching workshops at ICP since the early 2000s.
You’ve been shooting in Haiti since 1980. Why did you first go?
ThefirsttimeIwenttoHaitiwastocovertheweddingofformerpresidentJean-ClaudeDuvalier,whosenicknamewas“BabyDoc.”WhatInoticedwhenIwentonthattripwasthatitwasveryAfricaninitsnature,andIhadlivedinAfricabetween1978and1980,coveringaguerillawar. Afewyearslater,IreadinThe New York TimesthatfoodriotsweregoingoninHaitiandthatpeoplewerestarvingtodeath.Havingbeenthere,Iunderstoodthatthecountrywasprettymuchruledunderadictatorship;thesecretpolicewerethelawoftheland.Andso,toreadthatpeoplewereactuallydemon-stratingandrioting,becausetheywerestarvingtodeath,youknow?Thatwasveryunusual.AndIthought,Ineedtogoseewhat’sgoingon.
What was it like when you got there?
Therewereverypeacefuldemonstrationsatfirst,butthentheybecamemoreviolent.IwasupnorthinCap-Haïtien,whichisthesecond-largestcity,andoneday,suddenly,allofthedemon-stratorsranovertothiswarehouse,wherefoodaidwaskept,butithadn’tgottentothepeople.Theycovereditlikeantsonapieceofcandy,andtheybrokeintoit.Peoplewerefightingovertinsofoilandbagsofrice.Ijuststayedandcoveredallofthispoliticalupheaval.Itwasveryexcitingatfirst,becausewhentheyheardthatDuvalierhadleft,theycameoutintothestreetsdancing.Itwasreallyquiteanextraordinaryandemotionalthingtosee.ItwasjustsointerestingtobeinacountrythatwasveryAfricaninitsfeelingandseethisdawnofanewdaywithgreatpossibilities.
You also spent time shooting in Cuba in the 1980s, and even had the opportunity to photograph Fidel Castro for Newsweek to mark the 25th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution. What are some of your most vivid memories?
IwastherewithPatriciaSethi,whowastheUNbureauchiefatthetime.ShewastheonlyforeigncorrespondentwhogotaninterviewwithCastro.ShewasfromIndia,sohereallylikedher,becauseshewasfromwhatwewouldthenrefertoasa“devel-opingnation.”AndsowasCuba.Sotherewassortofakindredspirit.Plus,astheUNbureauchief,sheknewallthegossipaboutalloftheworldleaders.Ihad20minutestophotographhim,andthenIhadtoleavetheroom.Shewasinthereforthreeorfourhours,interviewinghim.
Was that the only time you saw him?
Aweekaftertheinterview,some400or500journalistsgatheredinfrontofthelittlehotelwherewehadbeenstaying;wewerewaitingtogetonthebustogobacktoHavana.ButPatriciaandIweretoldtoputourbagstotheside… Everybodywasabouttoboardthebustogohome,andthendowntheroad,wesawthiscaravanofjeepscomingfast.Theypulledupintothedriveway,andwhowasdrivingthefirstjeep,butFidelCastro!Hejumpedoutandallthejournalistsstartedclapping.Theywereveryexcited.Sofor20minutes,heyakkedwiththem.ThenhecameovertoPatriciaandme,andhetookherbyonearmandmebytheother,andheledustothejeep,andsomebodyelsepickedupourbags,andwedroveaway.

Sohetookus,alldaylong,throughouttheSierraMaestramoun-tains,showingusprojects—tourismprojects,farmingprojects,allofthesethings—andthatafternoon,weendedupatalittlefarm,wheretherewereafewdignitariesplusGabrielGarcíaMárquez,thegreatColombianwriter.Therewasagoatonaspitbeingbarbecued,andeverybodywasdrinkingandsmokingcigars.Therewasahammock,andFidelwasholdingcourt,andhewasbeingveryplayful.Hewasverycharismatic,verycharming,butyoucouldsortofunderstandthathealsocouldberuthless—andthathewasthe boss.

Iwasshootinglikeamadwoman.Ihadfreereign.Atonepoint,Fidelwassittinginthishammock,buthewasn’tlyingdown.Everybodyelsewassortofstandingaroundhim,andhesaid,“WouldyoulikeformetopretendI’masleep,inthehammock?”AndIsaid,“Yes,please,thatwouldbesplendid!”Sohelaydown,buthehadthiscigar,andhecrossedhisarms,andthenheshuthiseyes,andhehadthislittlegrinonhisface,andItookthepicture.IwishIhadactuallybeenabetterphotographerthen,butitwasgreat!
