THE AMEE ESME COURSES OFFER MAJOR ADVANTAGES Why Courses in Medical Education?There is increasing recognition of theknowledge, skills and attitudes required of a teacher in the healthcareprofessions.
The need for doctors, scientists andothers involved with teaching to havetraining is accepted by regulatory and other bodies.
Why AMEE-ESME courses? The AMEE Essential Skills in MedicalEducation Courses introduced in 2005 are designed to meet the needs of those new to teaching and for experiencedteachers who want an update on current best practice.
Who should participate?The ESME courses are designed for practising teachers in medicine and the healthcare professions, both basic scientists and clinicians.
They are aimed at those new to teaching and at teachers with years of experience who would like a greater understandingof the basic principles and an update oncurrent best practice.
The courses recognise that, withappropriate help, all, even those withconsiderable experience, can improvetheir skills in teaching.
On completing the course participants receive AMEE-ESME Certificate in Medical Education relating to the area addressed by the course. This recognises the participant’s interest in the field and may be credited towards further studies leading to a higher degree in health professions education internationally in institutions including Flinders University, University of Hong Kong, Liverpool University and Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile. This course was introduced in 2015 and is designed to encourage students in their interest and aptitude for medical education.It is delivered over 12 weeks and has six modules. Each module comprises• Interactive web-based presentations by introducing each module. A recording of the sessions is available to course participants.• Live interactive sessions with students.• Online asynchronous discussion groups of 15 students during each module, facilitated by a tutor.• Resource material including study guides, a core reading text and selected booklets are provided• Access to MedEdWorld for AMEE Guides and additional resource material• Assignment to be completed after each module

Who can benefit?The courses addresses what all students should know about medical education.

• ESME Essential Skills in Medical Education: This introductory ESME course provides an overview of the competencies required of medical and healthcare professions teachers.
