Veterinary Medicine - Large Animal Soft Tissue Surgery – PhD training
Advanced Clinical Training in Large Animal Soft Tissue Surgery is a PhD trainingcourse with the objective to expand the knowledge and skills of the postgraduatestudent beyond the scope of his / her doctoral research project and to prepare him / herfor a position in a specialised large animal practice or veterinary hospital. Morespecifically, the course provides the student with advanced knowledge on large animalsoft tissue surgery, including integumentary, gastro-intestinal and respiratory surgery,as well as basic ophthalmology and dentistry.
During their training, the postgraduate students are involved in daily surgical activities(soft tissue) at the large animal surgery department under supervision of seniorclinicians and / or specialists of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons. Studentsare encouraged to work independently and to develop their communicative skills (e.g.communication with supervisors, veterinary colleagues, clients, …). Active participationof trainees in journal clubs together with supervisors, residents and other postgraduatestudents provides the trainees with up-to-date knowledge on clinical and fundamentalorthopaedic research. Participation of the postgraduate veterinary student in clinicalactivities during night, weekend and holidays is mandatory.
Postgraduate students applying for this course should have successfully completedtheir Master in Veterinary Medicine (or equivalent).
To be able to perform specific integumentary, gastro-intestinal and respiratory surgeriesin large animals. To be able to perform a basic large animal dental and ophthalmologicexam and to be confident with the basic surgical procedures in both disciplines. Have acritical survey of clinical and fundamental research in the field of large animal softtissue surgery. Have an attitude of ‘evidence-based’ thinking with complex large animalsoft tissue problems. To be able to report the examination and treatment of clinicalcases professionally to owners and (referring) veterinary colleagues. Respecting animalwelfare issues during handling and treating animals.

Daily contact with supervisors (hands-on learning).
Evaluation is based on continuous assessment of the dedication, knowledge, skills andprofessional attitude of the postgraduate student (cf. final competences). Theknowledge, skills, dedication and ethical attitude of the student while performing orassisting in soft tissue surgical procedures will be evaluated on a continuous basisthrough observation and questioning of the student (50 % of the examination mark).Knowledge and critical appraisal of research data and problem solving competencieswill evaluated during clinical work and clinical seminars (25 % of the examinationmarks) and the competence to report results will be evaluated during clinical seminarsand on the basis of the written reports to clients and referring veterinarians (25 % of theexamination mark). The results of the permanent evaluation will be communicatedyearly followed by an opportunity for feedback.
