The Peel Summer Academy team would like to welcome each and every one of you to the 2010 season. We

are in our 26th year of programming with plenty in store and we’re busy getting it all ready for you.

We are always extremely proud of our vast array of courses offered at our UTM program, and this year is no

different. We searched far and wide to find the best teachers, artists, scientists, coaches and stage

performers to host our courses this year. We know your kids will have a blast!

The Arts

Alternative Artistic Media FEE: $25.00 Instructor: Davin Aldridge Grades: Recommended for grade 5 & up Explore artistic creation through non-traditional forms. Create sculpture out of wire, images out of sand, abstract geometry out of string and realistic scale models out of balsa wood. This course is designed to allow students to experience alternative forms of 2D and 3D art with varying degrees of difficulty and practicality. Each day for the first week of the course new artistic media will be introduced to students so that they may create their own mixed media masterpiece in the second week of the program. The final project will be a conceptual piece in any media or combination of media that has been introduced within the course.

Cartoon Illustration FEE: $20.00 Instructor: Jenny Li Designed specially for children, this course introduces basic cartoon illustration techniques for beginners. A series of nine lessons are designed, emphasizing on fundamental skills such as drawing and sketching, expression and composition, acting and posing shading and coloring. The class will be delivered by working on individual student’s preferred cartoon characters. Students should be able to create their own simple cartoon character & storyboard after the session.

Digital Art Adventures FEE: $25.00 Instructor: Susan Marar Students will explore making art with the computer as one of our most exciting contemporary art tools! This course gives your child the skills to create a unique personal project focused on self-exploration and software experimentation. Students will learn digital photography, image correction and image manipulation in Adobe Photoshop as well as build Media Literacy skills. They will examine visual culture in iPod advertisements and its influence on our identity. Students will reclaim the "I" in these corporate campaigns by developing digital images which are representative of who they are as individuals. Your child will come home with a project as unique as he or she is- and the confidence to effectively apply new artistic skills! Students must provide their own digital SLR camera and a portable storage device.

Draw! Paint! Sculpt! FEE: $30.00 Instructor: Susan Marar Students will strengthen their visual perception as they study the human figure through the technique of Gesture Drawing. Students will complete a number of gesture drawings in oil pastel and will utilize their drawing studies to craft the human figure in 3 dimensional form using innovative approaches to sculpture. They will apply their knowledge of Color Theory by painting the figure using complimentary colors. Cultural patterns and designs may be added to the final sculpture. Instruction will emphasize the structure and function of the human anatomy as well as the emotional approaches to depicting the human form.

Guitar for Beginners FEE: $0.00 Instructor: Sean Corry This is a course geared towards new guitarists who not only want to further their ability to play their instrument, but also want to be provided with an environment in which to play with other guitarists. The basics covered will include chord progressions, scales and improvisation, and song-writing, all covered with respect to a variety of musical genres including rock, pop, blues, jazz, hip-hop and folk. This course will purposely be taught with minimal music theory, focusing more specifically on the guitar as an instrument. This course will cover elementary concepts and be geared towards beginners but will touch on more advanced concepts and promote creativity, so guitarists of all skill levels are welcome. If you love music and plucking at a guitar, this is the course for you! Campers will need to provide their own acoustic guitars.

Hip Hop: Then & Now FEE: $0.00 Instructor: Kaye-Chereese Jorsling Nod your head while you study how and where hip-hop started. Learn what the true meaning of hip-hop and the purpose of rap music. See who were the for-runners in rap music and at what point it changed. Pick your favorite Rapper, see how they got started and what impact are they have on the industry today. Create your own rap song and perform them. Come, check it out, and take your turn on the mic!!

Improv: Introduction FEE: $0.00 Instructor: Carl Otta Some people call this the art of shooting the bull, but it is more than an inborn trait, it is a learnt way of life. Students will sharpen their communication skills along with learning to “think on their feet”. Learn how to be recognized for your intelligence and interesting personality. Classes will be Seminar style and involve individual and group work. Students will learn to recall information faster, increase their vocabulary, sharpen their verbal skills (public speaking) and gain self confidence. Learning to improvise through short skits, games, and presentations; young students will learn invaluable skills which will better prepare them to enter into secondary schooling and the part-time work force. Impress your critics and your fans with this fun and useful skill.

Improv: Advanced/Expert FEE: $0.00 Instructor: Carl Otta A more in depth look at the art of Improvisation. Students will sharpen their communication skills and hone their public speaking skills while acting out skits and scenarios that are presented to them with only moments to prepare. Improv for the advanced will focus on convincing body language and stage etiquette along with the ability to remain in character while “under fire”. Classes will consist in exercises and games which will prepare the students for their final showcase, a demonstration of their newly acquired skills through a public Improv game

PSA Glee FEE: $0.00 Instructor: Peter Low Love the new hit TV show Glee? Do you like to sing? You don’t have to be a Gleek to join the PSA Glee Club! In this unique course campers will learn how to sing in a choir setting, developing skills in the elements of music and performance, from singing a tune and adding harmonies to basic choreography! Campers will be able to listen to and learn some of the hit songs from the TV series, eventually leading up to a performance at the PSA Showcase night. No previous experience necessary!

Strings & Things: Introduction to the Violin FEE: $25.00 (VIOLIN); $30.00 (VIOLA); $40.00 (CELLO) Instructor: Laura Aldridge Have you ever wanted to play a stringed instrument? Strings and Things is all about making music and learning about the violin, viola and cello. This course offers you a chance to learn the basics of a stringed instrument of your choice. You will have the opportunity to play in a group, in smaller ensembles and as a soloist. In this course you can learn proper playing techniques as well as basic musical theory. We will play many different styles of music, including classical, jazz, improvisation, and fiddling. At the end of the course you will have the opportunity to wow your friends and family by performing at the Showcase! Come an try out a fun, challenging, and beautiful musical experience! This course is designed as an introduction to stringed instruments, however, students of any level are welcome. Course fee includes two-week rental of the instrument.

Watercolor Techniques FEE: $25.00 Instructor: Jenny Li

If you love to paint, this is the course for you! The basics of watercolor painting from concept to final artwork will be taught in a series of nine lessons. Each lesson will focus on watercolor fundamentals such as brush techniques, paper types and color palette. Eventually, the student will be able to combine these techniques in still life, wildlife, flower, and landscape scenes, hand by hand. The learning is vivid and stress free which is relaxing yet challenging.

Business & Personal Development

Mind Your Own Business FEE: $10.00 Instructor: David Patton

Do you want to become the next billionaire business mogul? Are you interested in the intricacies of the business world? Have you ever wanted to be part of Donald Trump’s Apprentice? If the answer to any of the above questions is yes, then this course is definitely for you! This course will introduce the basics of several key facets of business including marketing, organizational behaviour, management, and the stock market using interactive and entertaining activities. The course will conclude with an Apprentice challenge where students can use what they have learned and apply those skills to a real life scenario. Students will be encouraged to develop their analytical, thinking, problem solving, strategizing, and social interaction skills throughout the duration of this course.

Swish: The Business of Sports FEE: $0.00 Instructor: Anish Bhalla LeBron James may be getting the biggest contract in NBA history this summer. Makes you think, whoever is signing his cheque is probably making even more than he does. In this seminar course we are going to examine everything behind the business of sport, from learning about sports endorsements, to talking to an executive from maple leaf sports, this course will open your eyes into the lucrative business behind sports. We will also learn about amateur sport, event marketing, and contract negotiations. So the next time you read about that $100 million contract, you know who really is making the big bucks.

To Debate or Not to Debate FEE: $5.00 Instructor: Nina Sharma

Debating is a great way to develop arguments both for and against a particular topic. Students will be able to learn how to use proper debating techniques to hold a well mannered debate. Debating can provide students with listening, speaking and writing skills. Students will be able to gain confidence when conveying their own opinions and be able to sharpen their linguistic skills. Debating lets individuals see both the strengths and weaknesses in their argument which will allow the students to revise it, in order to make it more concrete. Many age appropriate topics will be discussed which may include, homework, school uniforms, environmental problems, laws and many other issues that the students are interested in. Students will be involved in several types and styles of debates, which include individual, partnered and group debates.

We find the Defendant… FEE: $5.00 Instructor: Nina Sharma In We Find the Defendant… students will review various case studies and look at the impact that it has had on both the law and the country. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms will be the main focus of this course allowing students to learn about what rights they have as a Canadian citizen. As part of this course, students will prepare for two in class mock trials wherein the students will take turns playing various roles in the legal system. Each student will be able to showcase their understanding of the roles and laws by accurately portraying their role to the rest of the class. This course focuses on increasing the student’s public speaking and analytical skills. This will also help strengthen their understanding of the legal system and legal process in Canada.

Crafts, Games + Hobbies

C is for Cookie FEE: $15.00

Instructor: Erin Martin

Who doesn’t love cookies? As much fun as eating them can be, baking them is even better! Let your taste buds celebrate as we bake a variety of delicious treats while learning about the importance of following recipes and substituting in recipes, different baking techniques, proper kitchen etiquette and safety, and even baking on a budget. If you’re a cookie monster then this is the course for you!!

Graphology: Handwriting Analysis FEE: $5.00 Instructor: Janet Clattenburg Graphology is the study of handwriting, and is especially employed as a means of analyzing character. In this course, students will be learning how to interpret handwriting of themselves and others. This introductory course will focus on 1) the history of graphology, 2) its uses and forensic applications in the real world as well as portrayals in media works, 3) and its art, science, mathematical and technological aspects. In this course, students will analyze celebrity signatures, a well as participate in ink analysis and forgery experiments. Students, under guidance, will learn to analyze samples of handwriting in a progressive fashion. An emphasis on doodles and their significance will also be covered. **Bring samples of handwriting of others you wish to analyze too, to reveal their hidden secrets.

Magic: The Gathering FEE: $15.00 Instructor: David Patton Are you bored of waiting hours to say checkmate or can’t stand to hear the phrase “do not pass go, do not collect $200”? If you are tired of traditional games such as chess or monopoly that take hours to play, Magic: The Gathering is an opportunity that you can not pass up. This course will introduce the game of Magic cards at an introductory as well as an advanced level. Emphasis will be placed on rules, strategy, deck building, and of course, interactive play. The course will culminate with a large tournament. Students will be encouraged to develop their analytical, thinking, problem solving, strategizing, and social interaction skills throughout the duration of this course.

Not Bored by Board Games FEE: $20.00 Instructor: Craig Thompson-Wood New board games are being designed and developed all the time. While games like Monopoly and Scrabble are still the top sellers in the world, new and exciting games like Settlers of Catan and Ticket to Ride are gaining in popularity. In this course you will investigate a variety of board games through personal research and play. Strategies for each game will be discussed and tested for each of the games. Students will also have an opportunity to develop and playtest their own board game.

Poker Paradise

FEE: $5.00 Instructor: David Patton Are you sick and tired of saying “Go Fish”, or can’t stand to flip another card over in games like Solitaire and War without driving yourself insane? “Get the inside deal”, and give playing cards another chance by taking PSA Poker Paradise, a course specifically designed to teach students how to play a variety of poker games which rely on strategy and wit instead of luck to win. Course emphasis will be put on the rules, etiquette, terminology and strategy of the World’s most popular poker games. Course material will be taught at an introductory level and continuously become more complex as the course progresses. Students will be challenged to develop and apply their analytical, thinking, problem solving, strategizing, and social interaction skills throughout the course’s duration.

Razzle Dazzle ‘Em FEE: $20.00 Instructor: Laura Aldridge Have you ever thought about making your own jewellery and accessories? Come and learn about fine jewellery making, accessories for the theatre, and mask making. Razzle Dazzle 'em is a course where you can design and build your own beaded jewellery, tiaras and carnival masks. We will explore the elements of colour, shape, texture, and line, as well as looking at the place of jeweller and accessories in fashion, culture and the theatre. Discover the amazing creativity, beauty, and history behind jewellery, accessories and masks. After this course you can dazzle everyone by wearing hand-made, beautiful accessories.

Sugar ‘n Spice & Everything Nice FEE: $15.00 Instructor: Kaye-Chereese Jorsling Do you think sugar is the long lost food group or perhaps you just have a sweet tooth? Well friend this is the course for you! We will enjoy numerous baked goods, which will be baked in class. The art of baking will be clearly demonstrated through skills learned in this course; from measuring, timing to carving and shaping, and controlled temperatures. Cookies, cakes, pies, brownies and so much more! Learn timeless secrets and how to re-create old family recipes like “Grandma’s brownies “or “Mom’s Apple Pie” (students can bring in recipes). One class will be focused on of cake decorating. Come and join us!! You’ll learn that it’s sweeter when you bake it yourself! There will be baking contest!!

Science + Technology

Build a Better Mousetrap FEE: $20.00 Instructor: Laura Aldridge Have you ever wanted of a better way to do something? As a budding engineer and inventor, Build a Better Mousetrap allows you to revel in the chance to design, build, and test your ideas. We will explore the fascinating world of technology and construction, learn about simple machines (gears, levers, cams, etc.) and use them to invent creative solutions to everyday problems. Discover how to convey the techniques of construction from building toys, such as K’nex, to real wood creations. You can design and construct machines while safely using saws, drills and glue guns. You will be challenged to find a creative, technical solution to an everyday problem. This course will offer students a chance to develop hands-on ingenuity, logical planning, and safe construction techniques. No mice will be harmed in the implementation of this course.

Earth & Space Science FEE: $0.00 Instructor: Anish Bhalla Welcome to Earth and Space, a course that provides a fascinating encounter with our planet, from the bottom of the sea to the depths of space. In this seminar course, we will examine the composition of the earth, the atmosphere and oceans, the dynamics of the earth, and beyond our atmosphere. The study of space is where we let our imaginations run free and discuss all the possibilities of other galaxies and life forms. Join me on this journey into the unknown.

Ecosystems and You! FEE: $0.00 Instructor: Krystina Faria Do you want to explore local ecosystems? Are you interested in learning about local habitats and how they work? If so, then join us for a fun-filled session of games and outdoor activities that will help you explore and understand the world around you. In this course, you will get the opportunity to play ecosystem tag, the Web of Life, and much more! You will learn all about habitats, ecosystems, and how change affects the local environment. You might even get the opportunity to find out more about your favorite plants and animals. If you are interested in nature, then this is the course for you. So, join us for a playful and active session that will help you gain a deeper appreciation for nature and your local surroundings!

Grossology FEE: $5.00 Instructor: Craig Thompson-Wood Have you ever wondered why we burp and fart? Do boogers really have any purpose in our bodies? The human body is an amazing and disgusting thing and in this course you will learn all about the science behind some of the most disgusting and revolting things that we do! Through personal research, hands on experiments and activities, you will be learning about some of the least talked about things at the family dinner table! Just be careful when you choose to share this information with family members, as this may put some people off their meals!

iMath FEE: $0.00 Instructor: Navneet Kang This course is designed to answer the question I’m sure most of you have asked yourself many times “when am I going to ever use this math when I get older?” We will examine careers that use the math you have been and will be learning and how it is used in their daily lives. We will have guest speakers from a variety of fields and we will look at common math questions that have relevance to our lives. Just like the iPhone has an application for everything, so does math!

Sports ’n Fitness

Beach Volleyball FEE: $0.00 Instructor: Miranda McIver Bump, dive, volley and spike your way through PSA this summer! If you do not mind getting a little sandy you can learn the basic skills and rules of beach volley-ball in two weeks. Everyday a skill will be worked on though fun drills and organized tournaments, from experienced players to beginners everyone is welcome to join!

Ultimate Sports FEE: $0.00 Instructor: Ernie Chan

Get outside and get active! This fun filled sports course will not only sharpen skills and knowledge in a wide range of sports, but also encourage sportsmanship, friendship and teamwork. Campers will enjoy playing a different sport every day, such as soccer, basketball, football, ultimate frisbee, touch rugby, baseball, volleyball, water polo, dodgeball, road hockey and handball. So fill up those water bottles, lace up those shoes, get your game face on... and get ready for a sport-acular session!

Worldly Knowledge

Capitalizing on Capitalism FEE: $5.00 Instructor: Anish Bhalla The government in our country closely resembles that of most governments of the world. But how does it run? What are the other options? How does it affect us? In this seminar course we will examine the history of politics in this course, discuss the various forms of government, examine which governments run the best, and how does our government provide for us. Also, we will examine the concept of capitalism and how it has created this global society you see today. Believe me, this will change your idea of politics.

Design a Country FEE: $10.00 Instructor: Davin Aldridge Unsatisfied with the political climate of the world? Why not create your own country. Design your fledgling nation, literally from the ground up. Map out the landscape, resources, industry, culture, language, major cities and monuments. In this class students can create a nation with a detailed history and goals for the future. They can choose a political structure that provides their nation with progress and government. Is your nation best suited to an Empire, Republic, Constitutional Monarchy or Kingdom? If Democracy just doesn’t work for you, why not become a Dictator, King or Queen. Is your nation pacifistic, militaristic, nationalistic, imperialistic, communist, or something new? Deal with foreign and domestic problems, as well as natural disasters. Students can make choices that affect the lives of the people they create, and then they will have the opportunity to relate those events to real events in history for a better understanding of the evolution of the modern world.

Greek Mythology FEE: $10.00 Instructor: Craig Thompson-Wood Hot on the heels of the highly successful new series of books and hit movie ”Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief”, the topic of Greek mythology has never been more popular since the time of the Greeks themselves! Ancient Greek mythology explained everything from the creation of the world to the passing of the seasons, to the human discovery of fire and so much more! Through reading of ancient stories, plays and modern interpretations and portrayals of the Greek myths in stories, movies and cartoons you will gain a greater knowledge and appreciation of these ancient stories.

Master Italian in 9 Days! FEE: $5.00 Instructor: Karen Krause

Discover the adventure of the Italian language, and become a master of the basics of Italian in ten days! If you want to have fun and laugh a lot while you learn a new language, then this course is for you! The course will involve many exciting activities and entertaining games, including drama skits that will enhance your Italian skills, while enjoying yourselves. We will learn basic grammar and important conversational phrases that are often used when communicating in Italian. You will also learn more about the Italian culture, and will experience a taste of it in the classroom!

Model UN FEE: $5.00 Instructor: Davin Aldridge

Do you want to join the playground of nations? Have you ever wondered what to do when your neighbor proclaims “THAT’S IT! I’m taking my nuclear technology and I’m going home!” Join the Model United Nations and find out, by learning to see the perspectives and goals of nations such as Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States, Russia, China, Kenya, Vietnam, Cuba, South Africa, Brazil and many others. Students will have the opportunity to explore other countries, their history and goals in today’s political environment of international relations. Students will be introduced to the history and structure of the U.N. Each day we will discuss pivotal events in history that the U.N has helped to shape. Students can dive into issues of trade, historic rivalries, friendships and associations as well as debating modern issues with classmates. This course is designed to give students a greater appreciation for the history of modern international relations.

Spy vs Spy: The History and Tricks of the Trade of Espionage FEE: $5.00 Instructor: Laura Aldridge

Explore the shady world of intelligence gathering through many fun, interesting, and challenging activities. In Spy vs. Spy, you will have the opportunity to learn about real spies and their fictional counterparts. Find out about the history of spies, code breaking, spy technology, and information analysis. Play with simple ciphers, crack difficult encrypted messages, and write in invisible ink! In order to hone your spy skills you can participate in games of espionage and intrigue. This course offers a chance for students to develop their logic, deductive reasoning, problem solving, and creative cooperative skills while exploring the fascinating profession of espionage.

Vampires FEE: $5.00 Instructor: Janet Clattenburg

Are vampires fact or fiction? Why are they are so prevalent in today’s media works? This course will examine various aspects of “vampirology” from its origins in different countries, folklore and ancient beliefs, modern beliefs, pathology and their portrayal in modern fiction/film/television/commercials. We will even try some garlic-based foods and to ward off these evil creatures, study about teeth and test our blood to see what type we have.

WWII Through Film FEE: $10.00 Instructor: Davin Aldridge Grade: Recommended for grade 6 & up

History through film has gained incredible popularity within the last 2 decades. Consequently history and warped history has become more accessible to the public than ever before. This course is designed to view and analyze some of the cinematic representations of events in WWII. Topics in this course will include; D-Day, the Pacific war, the Battle of Britain, the Eastern Front, the Fall of Germany, and Code breaking/ Espionage. Students will be asked to record and discuss observations within the movies and relate them to real events in WWII. At the end of this course students will be asked to create their own historical fiction or story board for a specific event in WWII.
