About the program
What can I do with a degree in Phlebotomy?
The phlebotomist is a key player on the healthcare team that is trained to collect and deliver blood samples to the laboratory for testing and is an important part of the team. The phlebotomist is also the face of the laboratory and must provide exceptional customer service to numerous patients while working in a fast-paced environment.
Halifax Community College offers a one-semester curriculum that will allow you gain the knowledge and clinical experience needed for you to successfully earn a certificate in Phlebotomy. Students of the program will learn the skills necessary to be able to safely collect a quality blood sample. Upon completion of the course, students are eligible to take a national certifying agency test.
Applicants must have a high school diploma/ GED and complete the steps listed below.
1. Complete an HCC application.
2. Schedule a time to take the HCC placement test. All candidates must successfully complete DMA 50 and DRE 98 to be considered for the program.
Class size is a maximum of eight students, which allows hands-on experience within the classroom and in area clinical sites. Eight candidates and two alternates will be selected at the start of each semester using a selection criteria. Classes are held in the fall and spring semesters.
Phlebotomist may be employed at :• Physician’s office laboratory• Hospitals or clinics• Blood donor centers• Community health centersMost employers seek phlebotomist who have or are eligible to earn a professional certification.
