Coverage includes introduction to law, constitutional law, administrative law, torts, crimes, contracts, ethics and the effect of government regulation on businesses. (This course will help satisfy the graduation requirements of the Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree.) Computer skills required are a general knowledge of word processing and ability to attach and upload documents. Daytona State College provides distance education technology that allows students to participate in educational programs that would traditionally be unavailable to non-traditional students. However, due to the nature of distance education, each student must accept a higher level of responsibility for his/her participation and behavior in order for the program to be successful. Class Format: This class will be completely online. Please approach this course with an open mind. I hope you enjoy taking a class online. The class is not any easier than taking Business Law I in a traditional classroom, but in addition to saving gas, you can do this class at any time you want, even at 3:00 AM when you cannot sleep. I post lots of information on the Course Home page in the ANNOUNCEMENTS. If you are not in ‘Compatibility View, you may be missing a lot!

Course Policies Disclaimer: Teaching policies and regulations for this course are not open for discussion or negotiation. This syllabus was constructed to be as complete as possible. However, I reserve the right to alter policies, procedures, and the syllabus as needed. Please utilize the website regularly as any changes to the syllabus will be posted there in “The Announcements.” How to Proceed Through this Course and be Successful in Business Law I: 1. Log in to this course. The first page you land on will be the ‘Course Homepage.’ Read the ‘Announcements’ on the ‘Course Homepage.’ Follow the directions there. These directions include READING the syllabus which has ALL of the important deadlines for exams and assignments. 2. Click on the ‘Content’ tab, and after reading the ‘Course Overview,’ click on “Start Here Introductory Materials.” Proceed through the online portion of this class chapter-by-chapter. Everything in the online course is accessed through the ‘Content’ tab (Table of Contents) in the Content section of the online course.

Contents of chapters may include: • PowerPoints for every chapter • Videos dealing with the content of that chapter • *Supplementary and sample materials to help with information covered in that chapter • Links to any assignment, project or discussion that must be completed for that chapter • Links to the quiz or exam for that chapter.

3. Get organized - please get an ‘old fashioned’ three ring binder (portfolio) for this class and take your own notes on each chapter, print your notes, PowerPoints, sample and supplementary materials and then put them in the portfolio organized by chapter or chapter title. This will make it easier to study for the quizzes and exams. 4. Read the Textbook before attempting the quizzes and exams. You will not be able to be successful in this course without READING the book. 5. Take the Quizzes and the Exams by the HIGHLY SUGGESTED due dates. There are nineteen (19) quizzes – one for each chapter. Each 30 minutes quiz has 10 multiple choice or true/false questions. You will have UNLIMITED ATTEMPTS at the quizzes. Only your highest quiz score will be counted into your grade. Each quiz is worth 10 points for a total of 190 points. Please take these ‘Randomized’ quizzes over and over for practice. The more you take the quizzes the more familiar you will become with the material and the better you will do on the exam. The quizzes can be accessed through the ‘Chapter Content’ or from the ‘Quizzes’ tab. There are six (6) exams for this class. Each 120 minutes exam has 50 multiple choice and/or true/false questions. You will have ONLY ONE ATTEMPT at the exams. 6. Participate in Discussions: You will find the information on how I grade the Discussions in the actual assignments. Discussions will only be open for a specific period, and must be posted by 11:59 PM on or before the due date to receive any credit. Please be respectful, considerate and polite in your email and discussions. If you have a question regarding the course material, post the question in the Discussion Forum ‘Course Questions.’ Other students will appreciate seeing the question and your instructor’s answer. Students are encouraged to respond to other students’ questions. Learning by teaching is a powerful tool. Remember that the Discussion Forums are our “classroom.” 7.Complete the Contract Project: You will need to pair up with a classmate as a partner to draft a contract. You only need one (1) contract between you, BUT EACH OF YOU NEEDS TO UPLOAD IT TO YOUR ‘ASSIGNMENT’ DROP BOX. There is a ‘Forum’ in the ‘Discussions’ to find a partner for this project. NOTE: Full instructions on the Contract Project, are in the “Content” section of course under Chapter 11. 8. View the PowerPoint Slides for the Chapter as well. There are PowerPoint slides for each chapter and they are a very good summary of the important points of the chapter. You may also want to print off the PowerPoint slides and insert them in your portfolio. If you get an ERROR message when trying to open the PowerPoint slides, remember to SAVE them first, and then after you save them you will able to OPEN them. If you still have trouble opening the PowerPoint slides, please see the “FAQ’s” in under the “Content” tab or call the Online Helpdesk at (386) 506-3950. It is very important however that you do not rely only on the PowerPoint slides to get information from the chapter. YOU MUST READ THE BOOK!

Communication: Interaction: Because this is a completely online course, the interaction in this class takes place online. When you sign into the online classroom, check the class ‘Announcements’ on the Course Home Page (the front page.) I will post important announcements in the ‘Announcements.’ Also, check your e-mail for messages from me. Read all discussion posts and check your e-mail every time you sign in. You should sign in at least three (3) days a week. Respect your classmates’ opinion. And, I also expect your classmates to respect your opinion. Please be considerate and polite in your discussions. Handling Of Assignments: All assignments must be uploaded to the appropriate ‘Assignment’ folder in Falcon Online by the date and time they are due. Type your full name at the top of the body of an e-mail or an assignment. Your name should be at the top of any Word document attached or uploaded. Always put your course number, BUL2241, on the subject line of an e-mail and your full name in the body of the message. Completion dates for ‘Discussions,’ the ‘Contract Project,’ Quizzes and Exams are found in this syllabus in the Course Schedule. Attendance Policy: Under the college’s new attendance policy, students who stop attending this class will be withdrawn from the class and receive a final grade of W1 (Withdrawn). In this online class, if you have not completed all of the coursework, and do not log in and do any work for two weeks, you will receive the W1 grade.

Late Work/Make-Up Work and Exams: Late work is not accepted in this course. Sensitive Materials: Course content aims to enable students to reach course goals and objectives. As such, students may be introduced to a wide range of topics and ideas that differ from familiar understandings and beliefs. Some content may be considered sensitive or offensive or disturbing (or all of the above) by some students.

Grading Policy: Grades will only be given to students enrolled for college credit. You may, at any time during the semester, obtain your grade average by making an appointment or simply keeping track of your points. Incomplete (I) Grades: An incomplete grade will NOT be given UNLESS the following criteria are met: A request in writing is submitted to the instructor prior to last three weeks of class, All assignments (quizzes and exams) were completed at that point in time, The student has a grade of C or higher at that point in time.

The incomplete work must be made up before the middle of the next major semester. “I” grades automatically convert to “F” grades if the make-up requirements are not met and the appropriate grade change is not submitted by the deadline as published in the College Catalog.

Class Withdrawal Process: Although it is not necessary to have approval from the instructor to withdraw from the course, you should discuss the situation with the instructor. Many times the issue can be resolved with communication. Please review Refund/Repayment Policy and also check with the Office of Financial Aid to determine how this withdrawal might affect your current and future aid eligibility.
