    SANITATION WORKSHOP

    LENGTH: 4 - 5 days

    WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

    This workshop is designed for those interested in starting or expanding sanitation projects indeveloping countries. It concentrates on safe excreta disposal, hand washing and domesticwastewater disposal. It also introduces best practices for domestic hygiene, solid waste disposaland vector control. There is a focus on implementation methods and approaches for successfulsanitation projects. Participants may create an action plan for their project. Practical sessionsinclude technical design and sizing exercises, and construction of latrine slabs and hand washingstations.

    OBJECTIVESThis training module is designed to:

    transfer knowledge and skills

    enable participants and organizations to make informed decisions regarding the planning

    and implementation of their sanitation projects provide an introduction to best practices in sanitation, and their impact on health

    PARTICIPANTS

    The workshop is oriented towards the following participants:

    working in water and sanitation, community development or health projects

    motivated to start or strengthen programs for improving sanitation

    prepared to implement sanitation programs by working with households in low incomecommunities

    able to perform basic arithmetic using a calculator

    This is an introductory level workshop. Participants will work with concrete and construct basiclatrine components and hand washing stations. However, this workshop is not intended to providefull training on the construction and installation of latrines or masonry training.

    Participation by women is encouraged.

    METHODS OF INSTRUCTION

    This participatory style workshop includes theory, classroom exercises, open discussion, casestudies, demonstrations, and hands-on practice and construction. Approximately one quarter ofthe workshop will be spent in practical sessions constructing and assembling latrine components.Active engagement in learning activities is encouraged.

    CONTENT

    The following is a tentative list of the topics covered in the workshop material. A specific agendawill be developed for the training based on consultations with the organiser and participants.

    defecation, excreta and the link to health

    identifying and selecting appropriate latrine options

    design, sizing and siting of latrines

    household water requirements and wastewater generation

    drainage and disposal of wastewater

    design and sizing of wastewater disposal systems

    how to build a hand washing station

    lessons learned and case studies

    collecting and disposing of household solid waste

    good domestic hygiene practice

    vector borne diseases and methods for vector control

    planning for successful sanitation programs

    identifying and selecting an implementation approach social, cultural, economic and environmental considerations for sanitation programs

    During the workshop participants will get the chance to apply their new knowledge in the followingareas:

    sizing latrine pits

    sizing septic tanks

    sizing soak pits

    constructing concrete slabs (2-3 types; may include a reinforced square slab, domedround slab, SanPlat slab, etc.)

    constructing a hand washing station (2-3 types; may include tippy-tap, bucket andladle, etc.)

    project planning for your project
