Course Objective This intensive three-day course in forensic psychiatry will provide an in depth review of selected topics and relevant landmark cases. Basic concepts will be reviewed along with the latest case law. At the conclusion of the course, participants will: (1) have a good understanding of the major topics in forensic psychiatry; (2) understand the landmark mental health law cases; (3) be able to write more effective forensic reports; (4) be able to assess competency and sanity in defendants; and (5) be able to detect malingered mental illness. Format Teaching methods will include lectures, report writing exercises, discussion of videotaped vignettes and informal interaction wth faculty. A comprehensive 1,100-page syllabus with lecture outlines, 100 case summaries, report samples, reading lists, and over 700 self-assessment questions will be accessible on-line to all participants at no extra cost. Continuing Education The American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law designates this live activity for a maximum of 21 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Target Audience This program is designed for psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and attorneys interested in mental health law. The Course will be useful for those desiring a comprehensive overview and update in forensic psychiatry, as well as those preparing for forensic examinations.
