Understanding Pain Management – Therapeutic Options

SpeakersHal Blatman MDHal S. Blatman, MD, is the founder and medical director of the Blatman Health and Wellness Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, a nationally recognized specialist in myofascial pain, and co-author of The Art of Body Maintenance: Winners’ Guide to Pain Relief, a reference for treating myofascial pain, from migraine headaches to plantar fascitis. He is credentialed in Pain Management, and Board Certified in Occupational and Environmental Medicine, and Integrative Holistic Medicine. After receiving his medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1980, Dr. Blatman completed two years of training in orthopedic surgery. He later studied ergonomics and toxicology during his residency in Occupational and Environmental Medicine at the University of Cincinnati Hospital. In the early 1990’s, he studied with Dr. Janet Travell, pain physician to president JFK. Dr. Blatman is a past president of the American Holistic Medical Association.

Mazen Baisa PharmD, MBA, ABAAHP, FAARM, CPE, FACADr. Baisa is the Co-Founder and Clinical Director of BioMed Specialty Pharmacy, Southfield, Michigan. He is a national expert in individualized prescription formulations for pain management, hormone replacement therapy, and nutritional services. He supports health care providers who seek high-quality, effective alternatives beyond the traditional pill-form medications.

As a Certified Pain Educator and a Credentialed Pharmacogenomics Trainer, Dr. Baisa presents to national, state and local medical associations, health care groups, and consumers. He has developed Continuing Medical Education (CME) courses in pain management and hormone restoration for physicians, registered nurses and pharmacists. In addition, Dr. Baisa is an Advanced Fellow in Anti-Aging, Regenerative and Functional Medicine, which required over 250 hours of education focused on the interplay of hormones, inflammation, neurotransmitters, nutrients, and human wellness. He has also achieved certification from the American Board of Anti-Aging Health Practitioners, The American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, and is a Dietary Supplement Counselor.

Dr. Baisa simultaneously earned his PharmD and MBA from Creighton University in Omaha. He graduated at the top of his class with 4.0 GPA and was honored four consecutive years with the National Collegiate Medical Professional Award. Dr. Baisa completed a post-doctoral Pharmaceutical Industry Fellowship at Rutgers University.

Dr. Baisa has held positions at prestigious companies including Johnson & Johnson and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan where he was the recipient of numerous awards for customer service and leadership. In 2013, BioMed was awarded the ‘Michigan Top Places to Work’ Award by the Detroit Free Press, and the Governor’s Award for Community Service.

Dr. Baisa is a Taekwondo instructor and a gold medalist in his weight class, and holds a three-degree black belt. He enjoys traveling and exploring new places with his wife and his young son and daughter.

SpeakersWendi Medved PharmDWendi Medved graduated from the University of Oklahoma with her Doctorate in Pharmacy in 2009. She also completed her Bachelors of Arts in Biology from the University of Northern Colorado, with a year spent studying Biology at the University of Helsinki in Finland. Over the past 15 years, Wendi has worked in the medical research field first studying a variety of drug compounds and their antinocicpetive properties. Later she switched focus to research a variety of autoimmune diseases and their etiology. During her degree program at the University of Oklahoma she petitioned the school to allow the Advanced and Veterinary Compounding Courses from PCCA as part of her education. After completion of her doctorate degree she moved home to Colorado and became a licensed Colorado pharmacist. She worked in the pharmaceutical compounding industry both as a pharmacist and a Director of Pain Management with a compounding pharmacy. In 2012, she left her Director position to open her own compounding pharmacy, Coast to Coast Compounding, located in Golden Colorado. Wendi decided engage forth year pharmacy interns to help train the new generation of compounding pharmacist. She was recognized for her comment with the Preceptor of the Year 2013 from Regis University in Denver. During the process of opening Coast to Coast Compounding, Wendi has successfully juggled her start-up pharmacy, consulting practice and expanding family. She enjoys the flexibility that her thriving business allows and with her husband added a second little boy to the family in April 2014. Wendi is looking forward to being on the cutting edge of the pharmaceutical compounding industry and helping educate future compounding pharmacists.

Simonne Gori RPH FAARMSimonne Gori graduated in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and then came to the United States to pursue further studies in Pharmacy. She then became registered as a Pharmacist in the states of Oregon, Washington, and Texas. She was quickly distinguished as a pharmacist in the pharmaceutical compounding industry. After becoming a frequent speaker at several seminars and conferences, she was invited to work as a consultant pharmacist at the Professional Compounding Centers of America in Houston.

Simonne headed the team to Brazil as PCCA decide to expand and established the company in Sao Paulo. Since then, she has worked as a consultant pharmacist with research and development in drug and chemical distributors here and in Brazil such as Spectrum Chemical and Embrafarma.

Simonne has been in the editorial board of the International Journal of Pharmaceutical Compounding and as a staff writer and a content editor at Compoundingtoday.com. After all this time away from patients, Simonne decided it was time to focus on what she really enjoyed: patient contact! She always imagined the practice of pharmacy as an integrated form of taking care of patients. She is currently the pharmacist in charge of Pharmetrics Specialty in Houston, TX, a compounding only shop.

Simonne recently graduated as a Fellow in Anti-Aging, Functional, and Regenerative Medicine at the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. She is also Board Certified at the American Board of Anti-Aging for Health Practitioners.

SpeakersChris Gruber PharmDDr. Gruber is a new member of the CPCSI team and a valuable resource to third party support at Freedom Pharmaceuticals. With approximately 12 years of experience in pharmacy practice he brings a very diverse skill set to our CPCSI clients. His career experiences include managed care, retail, community/independent, specialty compounding, and pharmacy related IT.

Dr. Gruber obtained his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Samford University McWhorter School of Pharmacy in Birmingham, Alabama. He continued his formal training with completion of a Managed Care Pharmacy Residency at Blue Cross and Blue Shield. He is licensed to practice pharmacy in the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Tennessee. He is proficient in multiple pharmacy related software platforms related to pharmacy management, healthcare information, database management, and pharmacy benefit management.

Dr. Gruber completed a post professional residency and worked as a managed care clinical pharmacist for approximately three years. His experience includes commercial and Medicare Part D benefit management. During this time he served as pharmacy manager where he was directly responsible for all matters related to formulary management and development. His responsibilities included pharmacy benefit development, actuarial pricing and validation, sales and marketing training, website development, pharmacy and therapeutics committee, drug utilization management, pharmacy benefit management, pharmaceutical contracting, drug utilization review and healthcare outcomes, and drug information. He is proficient in multiple health plan, PBM, and database management software platforms including RxCLAIM.

Dr. Gruber has worked in both retail and independent pharmacy practice settings where he primarily served as the pharmacist-in-charge (PIC). More importantly at his last appointment he served as the PIC for a non-sterile compounding pharmacy for approximately two years. His responsibilities included both pharmacy practice and business related activities. He was directly responsible for development and implementation of standard operating procedures, process improvement, product and services research, development, pricing and billing, prescription compounding and dispensing, patient counseling, drug utilization review, contractual compliance, regulatory compliance, audit preparation, licensing, and specific aspects of marketing. He is proficient in several Pharmacy management software applications. Most notably PK Software/ The Compounder and QS/1 NRx.

The Understanding Pain Management – Therapeutic Options Seminar has been approved for 11 contact hours (1.1 CEUs) of continuing education credit. Attendees will be required to complete an online evaluation for each CE session they attend to verify attendance and acquire their CE. Attendees must provide their NABP e-Profile ID and birthdate (MMDD) to receive credit for any ACPE-accredited CPE session.

It is the responsibility of the CPE taker to give correct information. If incorrect information is provided, the record will be rejected by the CPE Monitor and the CPE credit will not be awarded. If you complete an online evaluation for each CE session you attend at the conclusion of the conference, your CPE credits will be uploaded to the CPE Monitor System within 60 days of completion. If you do not see CPE activity displayed for a session that you attended and it has been more than 60 days since you submitted the CPE to the provider, please contact your CPE provider.

All sessions carrying the ACPE program number are approved for continuing education credit.
