Master of Education (International)

This degree provides students with professional development experience through a range of project and research based initiatives or through internship programs with local, regional, or international partners. In addition to improving career opportunities, this program provides excellent training for students interested in pursuing a higher degree by research.

Admission requirementsSuccessful completion of:� a recognised four-year degree in a field related to education; or� a recognised three-year degree plus a Graduate Certificate,

Graduate Diploma or Honours degree of which at least one must be in a field related to education; or

� a qualification or qualifications and experience deemed as being equivalent to the above.

All applicants must have a minimum of one-year workplace experience in an occupation related to the field of education.

The Graduate Certificate in Education (International) is a 40 credit point course consisting of units from the Master of Education (International). It can be taken as a stand alone course or an early exit from the MEd (I).

Units - 80 credit points total

The Master of Education (International) course can be completed full time over 1 year but can be also be taken part time to suit student’s needs. The course allows students to explore their own areas of research interest across all units and is designed to provide a strong base in research skills. Study options include:

Professional developmentThis option gives you the opportunity to update knowledge and skills through core and specialist units and then three project units. The units offer you the flexibility to produce three individual projects or link them up to produce a larger portfolio of work. Students are encouraged to explore areas of interest and work with supervisors who provide expertise in that area. Past projects include:

� a literature review on wellbeing

� mentoring teachers in Philippine school systems

� conducting a discourse analysis of ESL policy

� cultural stresses faced by international students

Internship

This option gives you hands-on experience working with an organisation to achieve its educational goals. After completing the core units, students negotiate to complete a research issue determined by the organisation they are working with. Organisations include but are not limited to: schools; universities; private education providers; hospitals; and NGOs. These organisations can be based in Australia or internationally. Examples of internship projects include:

� incorporating music therapy into classroom teaching

� exploring multicultural policies in early childhood education

� investigating research capacity building in Philippines universities

ThesisThis option is designed for those who wish to gain experience doing an intensive research project or those who wish to pursue a PhD. As a full time or part time enrolment, students develop a project based on their own research interests. This produces a substantial piece of written work, which is externally examined. Examples of topics include:

� understandings of Indigenous bilingual education

� leadership styles in Cambodian higher education

� migrant experiences of immigration to Australia

� the implementation of Mother tongue policy in the Philippines

The Master of Education (International) meets the professional development needs of education policy makers, researchers, and practitioners working in the Asia-Pacific region. It offers learning opportunities in the Northern Territory, around Australia, and internationally.

This program responds to the need for capabilities required by professionals working in key areas such as (but not limited to) teacher education, education for all, technical and vocational education and training, and higher education. These capabilities include analytical thinking, collaborative learning, project management, and transformative practices in global settings.

Accessible and flexible

The MEd (I) places a high premium on increasing students’ professional participation, which involves engaging in debates, producing publishable material and expanding professional networks.

With state of the art video conferencing and an online interactive learning environment, our program enables students to access assignments, workshops, training resources, readings, symposia and lectures remotely and at their own convenience.

Students can participate from home or while travelling or working abroad, watch lectures repeatedly as desired, and work in a collaborative, online, real-time environment. This online learning environment includes engagement with international scholars and local professionals and community members

This course allows you to build on your experiences and interests through research and study. Our team approach to teaching creates a unique space where our researchers and lecturers get to know you and your interests. Our faculty meet and discuss student progression from one unit to the next, providing you with a collaborative study experience that builds your learning capacity from start to finish.

The MEd (I) degree brings together active learners, dynamic educators and global leaders who catalyse positive change in their communities.
