This booklet is designed to give you additional information on the
limited range of choices you can make as you enter S2.
Everyone continues to study the following subjects:
English
Mathematics
French
Physical Education
Religious & Moral Education
Personal & Social Education
You will also study Spanish for the first time this year.
In this booklet there are information pages only for the subjects
where a choice is available. (Modern Languages information is
included due to the introduction of Spanish in S2). Information on
core subjects can be gained from subject departments and on the
school website.

Free Choice
You will be given a course choice form to complete and return to
your Pupil Support teacher indicating your choices for S2. A copy
of this form can be seen at the back of this booklet. Your Pupil
Support Teacher will give you more information regarding the
times for this.
There will be another limited choice at the end of S2, however
please note that you will generally study these subjects until the
end of S3.

Your Parents: Make sure that you discuss your course choice with
your parents. If they are not sure about any of the details they can ask
the school for further information.
Your Subject Teachers: They are the best people to give you an
honest assessment of your strengths and weaknesses in a subject.
Your Pupil Support Teacher: Your pupil support teacher can offer
you help and advice on most things to do with your life at school. You
and your parents can make an appointment with your pupil support
teacher to discuss any aspect of your school life or work.
Your Year Head: The year head can be contacted for advice to
pupils and parents.
Yourself: You must think carefully about your course choice. Try to
choose subjects which you will enjoy and allow you to gain knowledge
and skills which will help in your future life.
FAQ Sheet: The frequently asked questions sheets are available on
the school website and may help to answer any queries which arise
regularly.

Jackie Bell is the Careers Adviser with Skills Development Scotland and is in
Linlithgow Academy on Tuesdays and Thursdays. A careers clinic is held in
the library from 1.00 – 1.25 p.m. each Tuesday.
Pupils wishing to make an appointment with Jackie should see their Pupil Support teacher to arrange this or contact her directly at
Jackie is also available at parents’ evenings. No appointment is necessary.

Linlithgow Academy offers its pupils a limited choice at the end of S1
allowing you, to a limited extent, to personalise your curriculum and thereby
ensuring more flexibility in the type and range of courses you can study.
The core subjects and the majority of the courses you choose at the end of
S1 you will continue to study until the end of S3, however there will be another limited course choice at the end of S2 where you can decide to
personalise some of your option choices again.
During PSE your Pupil Support Teacher will spend time going through this
course choice booklet and explaining to you the various choices you can
make both now and at the end of S2 so you fully understand the options
open to you.

opportunities. You will learn about the structure and function of the human body and the

and Global development. – This study will provide opportunities for an Interdisciplinary
project which will allow you to make comparison between different countries.

will need to employ a variety of skills including: independent thinking, high order research,

During S2/3 you will study units on – Medicine through Time, The Last Kings of Scotland,
Aztecs and The French Revolution. This study will provide opportunities for an
Interdisciplinary project. You will also study The Industrial Revolution and the Growth of
Democracy, World War One and a unit on John F. Kennedy which prepares us for
further study on Russia and Democracy in the future. This also ensures we are covering
local, European and World History and related themes.

You will gain an insight into major political and historical events and realize that it is
through these events that the future has been shaped. You will learn to appreciate the
significance of events from the past and have awareness of Britain and Scotland’s place in
the world. You will employ a variety of skills including: global citizenship, independent
thinking, high order research, enquiry skills, critical thinking skills, organizational skills,
team work and group work. There will also be co-operative learning tasks and lessons on
how to present evidence in various ways. Debating skills will also form part of the course.

You will be involved in working independently and in groups to design products, using
research and analysis techniques; developing a range of solutions to a given brief. The
selected designs will be manufactured and evaluated. You will be encouraged to exercise
imagination, creativity and logical thinking. You will develop an awareness of Graphics as
an International language. There will be the opportunity to specialise in various aspects of
the course.

You will gain knowledge of materials, tools and processes, and their practical applications
together with craft skills. You will develop an awareness of how you can influence the
design of all things in our environment and how consumer products are designed. You
may also develop skills in sketching, colour rendering, and C.A.D. A key part of the
course will cover the production and interpretation of technical drawings

You will be encouraged to work co-operatively and safely and to complete homework in
Graphics and Design folio research on time and to an appropriate standard. You will
complete a number of “Design and Make” coursework exercises, to cover a range of
techniques and to give experience of different materials. Students will pay a charge for
their completed manufactured projects.

You will be assessed on Knowledge & Understanding, Practical Abilities, Graphic
Communication and Design as appropriate to the areas of the course you choose to
specialise in. The Design and Graphics grades will be based on a folder of work which will
be built up through the course to cover the key aspects of the Design process and Graphics. Practical Abilities will be assessed on the projects constructed throughout the
course.

WWhhaatt wwiillll yyoouu ddoo?? Computing plays an increasingly important role in our work, homes and leisure activities. This 2
year course will provide you with an introduction to the necessary skills and knowledge that will
enable you to use technology successfully in your future career and everyday life. The course will
provide new challenges but also help you to enjoy and understand the subject in more depth. The
course is useful for those planning a career involving the use of computers but is also valuable in
terms of general education and personal development.
WWhhaatt wwiillll yyoouu lleeaarrnn?? Multimedia: This unit is designed to develop knowledge and understanding of the principles of
multimedia technology and to develop practical skills in the capture, creation and storage of
multimedia data. You will then apply this knowledge and practical skills to collaborate and solve
interactive practical problems using multimedia applications like Mediator, Dreamweaver and
Flash.
Graphics and Animation: This unit will develop and enhance the skills learned in S1 to create
animations and graphics using applications such as Flash.
Computer Systems: This unit introduces pupils to computer systems and emerging
technologies to understand their features and consider their suitability for the world of work.
Pupils will also be able to understand the components of a computer and be able to make an
informed choice when deciding upon the system for a specific purpose.
Safety and Responsibility: This unit allows pupils to consider ways in which technological
devices are protected, acting safely and responsibly when connected to a network and security
software.
Games and Software Development: This unit introduces pupils to the concepts and
processes involved in producing computer programs. It provides basic knowledge and skills in
developing software through the use of the different programming languages such as Visual Basic
and Scratch.
WWhhaatt wwiillll bbee eexxppeecctteedd ooff yyoouu?? As well as completing a series of practical assessments, success in this course will involve
a good understanding of theory, the production of a folio of work and the completion of
regular homework exercises.
HHooww wwiillll yyoouu bbee aasssseesssseedd?? During the course there are both practical and theory assessments for each of the units of work. The folio of work produced at the end of the 2 years will also be assessed.

WWhhaatt wwiillll yyoouu ddoo?? The aim of this course is to help young people recognise business as an important
element in society. Throughout the course there will be opportunities to investigate
local businesses, play business games and use ICT in a variety of ways e.g. business
websites, blogs, and video conferencing. Students will also participate in the Young
Enterprise Scotland ‘Stairway to Success’ program and gain certification in setting up and
running a mini enterprise. Another part of the course will involve the students taking part
in competitions and other in-class enterprise activities to develop decision making, team
working and communication skills.
WWhhaatt wwiillll yyoouu lleeaarrnn?? The course will be divided into the following areas:
Supply and demand for goods/services
Managing personal and business finances
Working for yourself/self employment
Different types of business organisations
Marketing a business
Establishing a business identity and branding
E-business and websites for business
Customer Care and Services
Throughout the course the students will use a variety of software packages to present
their work and enhance their ICT skills.

homework and portfolio tasks must be completed and handed in on time. Commitment
to your work and active participation in group activities will also be expected.

This course is assessed using a combination of methods including online knowledge and
understanding tests, role play scenarios, portfolios and reports, online learning journals
and self evaluation activities.

The new S2 course option will focus on the 3 following topics Nutrition, Bugs and
Bacteria and Fashion and Fabric. The following topics are discussed in more detail:
Nutrition
Pupils will learn about the nutrients, their sources and their important functions in the body.
Within this topic pupils will develop their practical skills whilst making a variety of healthy
dishes, recipes such as pasta carbonara, mini carrot cakes and vegetable risotto.
Bugs and Bacteria
This topics main focus is on food poisoning, how it occurs and how to prevent it, the storage of food and how to control pests. Within this topic pupils will continue to develop
their practical skills by making a variety of dishes with the main focus being on hygiene.
Recipes such as beef lasagne, beef burgers and chicken pie are some of the dishes made
within this topic.
Fashion and Fabric
In this topic pupils will develop their hand eye coordination by designing and making a pillow
which is personalised to them. Also within this topic the pupils will have the opportunity to
make another textile item such a pin cushion, Christmas tree decoration or sock puppet.

WWhhaatt wwiillll yyoouu ddoo?? The Art & Design department aims to develop your ability to appreciate the visual world
and to respond to it in a creative way. You will be encouraged to develop various skills
and explore ideas through a range of media (such as paint, drawing, print, collage, mixed
media, sculpture, graphics, textiles, ICT) both in 2 and 3 dimensions. Projects are
designed to build necessary skills and understanding to allow you to develop an individual
and independent approach to work. Art and Design develops your skills in visual literacy,
problem solving, research, experimenting, exploring and analysing. You will also gain
understanding and appreciation of art forms past and present, as well as from different
cultures.
WWhhaatt wwiillll yyoouu lleeaarrnn?? The S2 Art and Design course is a natural progression from S1 and builds on that
foundation to explore a broad range of skills over the next two years.
You will cover three areas:
Expressive Activity – the completion of artwork, which combines pupils’ ideas and
feelings with imagination and demonstrates controlled use of a variety of art materials and
processes.
Design Activity – the creation and investigation of a Design Brief, the development of
two possible ideas showing invention and flexibility of thought and the finalisation of a
solution to the brief. An evaluation of the whole design process is included.
Art and Design Studies deals with looking at the work of artists and designers whose
work relates to the subject matter of the two practical units.
WWhhaatt wwiillll bbee eexxppeecctteedd ooff yyoouu?? You will be expected to show commitment to your work and take responsibility for your
learning. Homework tasks must be completed on time and to the best of your ability.
Above all, you should have an interest in creating and understanding Art and Design and
the determination to develop that interest.
HHooww wwiillll yyoouu bbee aasssseesssseedd?? You will be continually assessed during your Art and Design classes and you will be given
tips, ideas and encouragement that are meant to help you improve. You will also be
involved in evaluating your own work as well as the work of your peers. Evidence of
your assessments will be recorded in your Pupil Profile, such as photographs of your
finished work, teacher observations and notes as well as your own lesson evaluations.

The course in S2 and S3 will build on the skills you have developed in S1 and will continue
to be based around three areas - performing, composing and listening. In the
performance aspect of the course, you will have the opportunity to choose between
different instruments and play music from a wide range of cultures. You will compose
your own music in a variety of styles, and will use a range of music technology programs
to record your work. Listening concepts will be taught in a variety of ways, and you will
learn to listen to Music in a more focused way.
WWhhaatt wwiillll yyoouu lleeaarrnn??
You will learn to play, write and analyse music from a variety of styles, including rock,
pop, traditional Scottish, classical and jazz. This could be either individually, or as part of
a group, learning how to work in different situations. As the world of music is constantly
changing, we will incorporate an array of music programs, as well as internet based
resources, to enhance your musical skills.
WWhhaatt wwiillll bbee eexxppeecctteedd ooff yyoouu??
You will be expected to practice instruments in class and at home to develop your playing
skills and prepare performances - both as a soloist and in groups. You will also
compose music in various styles, recording them onto the computer.
As new Listening concepts are introduced, and you become familiar with the ideas and techniques, you should ensure that these are consolidated at home using the resources
and websites provided.

Your teacher will listen to you play, and at times you will perform to the rest of the class.
Compositions will be written in both groups and individually, and a variety of assessments
will take place over the 2 years. Written Listening assessments throughout the course
will keep a track of your knowledge and understanding. All of these assessments will
provide a basis for target setting and next steps in learning between you and your
teacher.

During S2/3 you will study both French and Spanish. You will look at Units on Food and
Drink, Fashion and Shopping and also Travel and Holidays. In addition you will study Free
time and sports, Jobs and Health. For Spanish there will also be a Unit on Self and Family.
All of this will be in a context of language you can use in the context of travel and work.
WWhhaatt wwiillll yyoouu lleeaarrnn?? You will learn about global citizenship and cultural comparisons and have opportunities
for comparing and contrasting lifestyles in different countries. You will also learn a variety
of skills including : communication skills, independent thinking, research skills, enquiry
skills, thinking skills and organizational skills .You will also learn to develop listening skills
and dictionary skills. An important part of the course enables you to be involved in team
work and group work. There will also be co-operative learning tasks and n appreciation
and awareness of different cultures and customs in the world.
