Boston and the Birth of Vaudeville

Tuesday, October 15th | 11:00 am

with Trav S.D.

Vaudeville, where double-takes, spit-takes, pratfalls, running jokes and animal acts were right at home.

Vaudeville,or“voixdeville”(Talk of the Town) as it was known in France was in its heyday in the United States in the late 19th century, and only began to wane when moving pictures eclipsed its appeal. Elaborate Vaudeville Houses in cities all over the country staged several shows each day for popular audiences. They included dancers, singers, magical acts, acrobats and strong men. Almost anything that could provide entertainment might be found on a Vaudeville bill.

For the U. S., it all began in Boston where carnival barker-turned-impresario, Benjamin Franklin Keith opened a Vaudeville theater above his Gaiety Museum in 1883. Sensitive to the conservative tastes of his Boston audience,Keithrejectedthecommon“blue”humorthatoftencomprisedVaudevilleacts, andinsistedononlythefamilyfriendly“BostonVersion”ofentertainment, a term which became known throughout the industry.

Join theater historian Trav S.D. for a tour of Boston Vaudeville history and to learnhowVaudevillecontinuestoinfluencemodernentertainment—evenour current lexicon. It promises to be a boffo afternoon!

Writer and performer Trav S.D. is a is a key figure in the New Vaudeville, Burlesque and Indie Theatre movements. He is best known for his critically acclaimed 2005 book No Applause, Just Throw Money: The Book That Made Vaudeville Famous and as the original director and producer of the 2014 revival of the Marx Brothers’ 1924 show I’ll Say She Is.

Making a Difference in Rural Honduras

Thursday, October 24th | 2:00 pm

with Mark Hopkins

What is life like in a small Honduran village? What would motivate its subsistence farmers to pull up stakes and seek asylum in America? This illustrated talk centers on a remote town in the mountains of Honduras where American volunteers have helped its residents overcome the challenges of extreme poverty. The narrative describes the many challenges they face -- lack of education, poor health, polluted water sources, and an uncaring government -- and follows the villagers’ progress as they work with teams of American doctors, teachers and engineers to resolve those problems. Along with documenting their many successes, it also introduces a dismaying new problem -- climate change -- and speculates on how it may affecttheregion’sfutureanditsflowofemigrantstotheU.S.

Retired from a career as an advertising agency executive and freelance writer, Mark Hopkins has been exploring photography’s artistic potential sinceacquiringhisfirstdigitalcamerain2004. His attention focuses mainly on the natural world but not to the exclusion of whatever else may look interesting. He and his wife Margie Yamamoto reside in Concord, Massachusetts when they are not traveling.

North Hill was on the cutting edge of senior living in 1984 when it opened its doors to older adults who were approaching retirement. Its founder Jarvis Farley was an actuary who used his training for the greater good. As a corporator for Babson College, he was invested in maintaining the institution’s financialstability.Asamemberofthe Needham-Wellesley community, he anticipated that the next generation of seniors would need premier housing for retirement that wouldn’t drain their assets.

Conferring with like-minded leaders, he assessed these complementary needs and found a dual purpose. A newly created 501-c-3 (which became North Hill) leased 59 acres of land from Babson CollegeandbuiltthefirstLifecaresenior living community in Massachusetts. Now local seniors could continue the lifestyle they’d always enjoyed in a community close to home, while preserving their assets through Lifecare contracts.

North Hill is 35!Since then, North Hill has retained its reputation as a premier provider of senior housing and care, and has kept pace with trends in senior living.

In 2009, North Hill recognized that seniors’ attitudes about retirement were changing. Boomers were feeling younger than ever, and wanted a lifestyle to match their vibrancy. North Hill once again forged a new path with Project True North, modernizing the campus, adding an entire wing of new, airy, modern apartments and designing programs to match the energy, sense of purpose and love of life-long learning thatdefined the next generation of seniors.

Ever-evolving and always apace with new ideas, North Hill has secured its place as the standard-bearer among Continuing Care Retirement Communities in the region.

So join us for these catalog events this fall. They characterize our community’s fulsome embrace of PurposeFULL Living.

Happy Birthday North Hill!
