    OutlinedescriptionofthemoduleIntheThesismoduleYear5studentsresearchaspecificareaofarchitecturalinterestthatinformstheirdesignresearchresultinginthesubmissionofa70009000wordThesis.Themodulesupportsstudentsdevelopmentofdifferentresearchapproachesthroughwhichtoundertaketheirstudy,including:humanitiesbasedcriticalandhistoricalanalysisempiricaldatacollectionandanalysissocialsciencemethodologiesiterativedesignresearch,andtechnical/scientificapplications.InTerm1,studentsattendResearchMethodsSeminarstowardssubmittinga2000wordResearchMethodsStudy,andareallocatedaThesisTutortoworkwiththemtowardsthesubmissionoftheThesisatthebeginningofTerm3.

    Aims,ObjectivesandLearningOutcomes

    Onsuccessfulcompletionofthecourse,eachstudentwillhaveanadvancedunderstandingof,andabilitiesin:

    Identification,investigationandcommunicationofaspecificareaofarchitecturalinterest.

    Developmentofskillsinreading,evidencebasedresearchandwriting.

    Developmentofresearchasacreative,criticalandinventiveactivity.

    Theroleofatleastoneofthefollowing:history,theory,criticism,andscienceandtechnologyinarchitecturaldesignresearch.

    Augmentationoftheirdesignpracticewithinformedknowledgeoftechnical,historicalandtheoreticalissues.

    ResearchMethodsStudy

    Thissubmissionisa2000wordstudyabouttwoofthesourceslistedbelow.Youwillthereforeneedtoanalyseandthenwriteabouthowthesesourcesdefineandexplaintheirparticular'researchmethod'.Theaimofthestudyistoenableyoutodevelopyourskillsofunderstandingabouthowdifferentmethodsofresearch(e.g.architecturaldesignresearch,history,theory,urbandesign,housing,planning,policy,technologyorenvironmentalapproaches)constructarchitecturalsubjectmattersor'knowledge'.BycompletingtheStudyyoushouldgaininsightinthinkingabouthowyouwilllaterchoosematerialsandknowledgesourcesforyourownThesisresearch.Thefocusofthisstudyistoencourageyoutospendtimethinkingabout,andrespondingto,othersourcesandideas.Inparticular,youareencouragedtoconsiderthefollowingquestionsinwritingyourStudy:

    1.Whatkindsofarchitecturalknowledgedothesemethodsresultin?i.e.youwillneedtoexplainwhatkindofarchitecturalknowledgeisconstructedbyeachoftheselectedresources.Themorepreciseyoucanbeindefiningthecriteriathat'makes'thisknowledgerelevanttoarchitecture,thebetteryouwillbeabletoarguehowamethodworks.Foreachpointyoumake,youshouldgiveanexamplefromthesource.

    2.Whatkindsoftoolsofanalysis/constructionorpresentationareusedineachmethodtoconstructarchitecturalknowledge?e.g.Dotheyuseimages,text,data,argument,analysisetc.?Howaretheseusedandtowhateffect?Again,themorepreciseyoucanbeinidentifyingtheexactideas/tools,etc.,thebetteryouwillbeabletoarguewhatkindofusetheideashave.

    ResearchMethodsStudyResources:
