METTAWEE RIVER THEATRE COMPANY ANNOUNCES TOUR DATES FOR ‘OUT

OF THE PAST: CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF THE METTAWEE JOURNEY’ Perfor-

mances will take place at outdoor venues in upstate New York and nearby Vermont and Massa-

chusetts, and are scheduled from through July 21  (schedule attached). The production will

include scenes and songs from four decades of Mettawee productions. There will be appearances

by Aristophanes’ gluttonous dung beetle, as well as Brecht’s forlorn lovers in THE CAUCASIAN

CHALK CIRCLE . The world will be created on the back of a turtle; the great Irish sea god

Mannanon will declaim the tragic tale of Phaedra; and Grandmother Earth will send Nanabozho off

to get the world ready for humans, Archy the cockroach and his lowly associates wil l share memo-

rable moments from their illustrious careers, and two long lost brothers will be reunited in

VALENTYNE AND ORSON . All these encounters will incorporate an abundance of Mettawee’s

signature masks, puppets and giant figures.

According to Mettawee Artistic Director Ralph Lee, “These headstrong characters have been

clamoring to be let out of their boxes for another fling in front of their fans, so I finally decided to let

them have their way. Here goes! I take no responsibility for their behavior.” For more information

about the Mettawee River Theatre Company, including a full schedule of this summer’s outdoor

tour, visit the company’s web site at www.mettawee.org.

ON THE FARM by Andy Manne

This week’s ag report issponsored by:

WHAT TUNE WILL MOTHER NATURE BE SINGING THE REST OF JULY AND AU-GUST? Two great truths underpin any seasonal weather outlook. First, there is nearly always acaveat. Second, there is always an exceptionThis summer, the caveat hinges on whether thecurrent El Niño can gain a foothold andstrengthen. In its current weak state, mild tem-peratures with normal to above-normal precipi-tation could settle across the Corn Belt through-

out July and August. Should we get into a strongEl Niño as the European Model suggests (whichis not 100% certain at this stage), we would in-crease temperatures further and make it quitea bit drier. Even though a warm and wet Julywould seem favorable on the surface for cropproduction, forecasters say the timing of such a shift would bring some concern about excessiveheat during corn pollination. Also concerning would be much higher pest populations in light of thewarmer spring. If El Niño doesn’t gain any signif icant momentum, most forecasters agree it couldbe another nice summer for many farmers.Other forecasters, including Pete Pastelok with AccuWeather, are looking at areas where therecould be increased weather volatility this summer. For example, Pastelok says the overall tornadocount should increase from 2014, and he’s predicting more 90° days than in 2014 for the Northeastand mid-Atlantic regions. The overall hurricane threat shouldn’t be as worrisome, however. TheNational Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says three to six named storms couldreach hurricane status (winds of 74 mph or higher), with up to two of those storms reaching Cat-egory 3 to 5 (111 mph or higher). NOAA says the chance of a “below normal” hur ricane season is70%. Many eyes are still watching for potential drought relief in California, too. But most forecast-ers are not overly optimistic that relief will come at this time. From a marketing standpoint, an international weather wild card could get the bulls running. That’sbecause China and Brazil are also facing weather challenges. In Brazil, the second crop might have

lower yields because rainfal l was the highest in more than 25 years, with below average tempera-tures. In China, farmers faced the wettest spring in the past five years with planting delays in theJilin region (“the Iowa of China corn”).If they didn’t plant a cooler or wetter variety corn, they willlikely have lower than expected yields come August. To learn more about how Weather Trends 360 works and access weather tools, visit http:// www.FarmJournal.com/weather
