COUPLING AND ALIGNMENT

WHAT IS SHAFT ALIGNMENT

Proper positioning of the shafts of driver

and driven components of the machine

drive train.

Periodic alignment check of all coupled

machinery are considered one of the

best tools in a preventive maintenance

program.

ALIGNMENT

CAUSES OF MISALIGNMENT

Although a machine is installed with proper alignment, misalignment may develop in short time due to:

Thermal expansion

Loosening of hold down nuts

Foundation movement or settlement.

Expanded grout

Rusted shims.

Distortion in piping.

MISALIGNMENT INDICATIONS

Excessive vibration.

Excessive bearing temperature.

Coupling wear.

Bearing wear.

Noise.

Foot corrections

SOFT FOOT CORRECTIONS

Consider a chair with one short leg. The chair will never be stable unless the three legs are shortened or the short leg is shimmed.

Soft foot should be corrected prior to alignment.

CALCULATIONS

Trial-and-Error may produce the correct answer. However, it is extremely time consuming, and as a result, it may be considered “good enough” before it really is.
