What is Recycling Contamination? This occurs when non-acceptable items, such as trash, are placed in recycling containers. Why keep Recycling Free of Contaminants? For the past year, the global recycling industry has been adjusting to a series of changes to China’s policies related to importing recyclables. Among the changes are new standards for recyclables to contain virtually no contamination, which has led alternative markets both domestically and internationally to also demand higher quality recyclable materials. Nationally, on average, 25% of all items in recycling bins are actually trash. That’s a big problem impacting recycling efforts around the world. You can help by following three simple rules: 1. Please contact Waste Management customer service (800) 423-9986 at least 48 hours in advance of your regular collection date to schedule.

Disposal of Electronic Waste

Household Hazardous WasteHousehold hazardous waste cannot be collected by Waste Management. For information regarding the proper disposal of household hazardous waste, please call the Riverside County Environmental Health Department at (800) 304-2226. Household hazardous waste includes: used oil filters, paint, antifreeze, batteries, propane tanks, pesticides, household cleaners, pool chemicals, sharps/needles, and fluorescent bulbs.

Bulky Item & Extra Green Waste Collection Residents with curbside cart service may request two times in a calendar year, the free pick up of household bulky items and extra green waste. Additional bulky item pick ups are available at a nominal cost. Bulky items include: couches, washers, dryers and refrigerators. Bulky items do not include large items such as car bodies or construction and demolition waste, hazardous waste or any other items that cannot be handled by one person. Christmas Tree RecyclingWaste Management will collect and recycle Christmas trees for the first two weeks following Christmas at no additional charge. •Trees longer than six (6) feet must be cutin half. •Please remove all decorations including tinsel,lights, ornaments and tree stands. •Flocked trees will be collected by thetrash truck but cannot be recycled.

Waste Management offers free pickup of residentially generated used motor oil (a maximum of two gallons per week are accepted). Please contact Waste Management customer service (800) 423-9986 at least 24 hours in advance of your regular collection date to schedule.

Call to find out if you qualify for the delivery of free, postage pre-paid sharps containers. Fluorescent bulbs and sharps containers are not per-mitted inside any automated carts.

Bulky Item CollectionResidents can schedule two bulky item pick-ups per calendar year at no additional charge. These items are picked up on service days and need to be placed at the curb by 6 a.m. in order to be retrieved. Recycle Batteries Properly. Do not place them inside your recycling cart: Tape ends, place inside a small zip-top bag. Place on top of your blue cart.

No Christmas Lights inside recycling carts. They may be dropped off at: Buellton - 97 Commerce Drive OR Santa Maria-1850 West Betteravia Road.
