Some particular successes

From Texas – Gary Bomar

“In addition to regular samples, I used it as a training tool/program for Master Gardners. We actually submitted a sample with computer hooked up to a projector. Went over great , because of this they are going out hunting for samples to submit, the education continues with this group. They are learning how to identify difficult plants, and disease problems. Also because of a newspaper article, I am receiving e-mails of plants, reviewing them then also forwarding samples. One producer is creating an inventory of plants on his ranch, and using this service to identify unknown plants.”

Some particular successes

From Illinois – Kelli Ann Bassett

“--- During the Spring a gentlemen brought several specimens of a weed into our office for ID and control. Since it was too early for any leaves to be out on the vine (weed) he brought in the fruit. I sent them through the DDDI system to our Springfield Center to George Czpar to examine.--- I did find out that the weeds are being monitored for spread in the state --- The IDNR was interested in finding out the location where the specimen was found to use for some of their statistics/surveys. ---”

Some particular successes

From Georgia – Tommy Cummings

“--- Fish kills, although not a constant problem, do exist, and in most cases occur suddenly. --- we can, in most cases, receive a diagnosis with recommendations from Drs. Lewis or Burtle within a time frame of a few minutes to 1 or 2 hours. --- I feel this service has saved our Producers over 1/4 million dollars in fish losses during the past two years by faster diagnosis and correction recommendations for the problem. ---”

Some particular successesFrom Georgia – Ed Brown

“--- images of a mushroom were submitted --- by John Pope, County Extension Coordinator in Monroe County --- images represented what was left of a mushroom that had been ingested by a person in Monroe County and subsequently had to be hospitalized. --- it was important to get microscopic images of the spores produced by the mushroom to make a positive diagnosis. --- The images were confirmed to be Chlorophylum molybdites, a highly toxic mushroom. Literature was photocopied and faxed to John Pope and distributed to the attending physician so the proper treatment could be administered. ---”

Some particular successes

From Georgia – Willie Chance

“--- Ed Carroll --- of the Houston County Animal Control Department --- wanted to id a snake. --- I heard him say that a little girl had been snake bit. --- We took digital images and sent them to Greg Balcomb of DNR and to retired UGA Forester Jeff Jackson. They quickly confirmed that it was a copperhead --- This info was important evidently. Someone said the anti-venom was different for the two types of snakes. --- Last we heard the little girl was recovering.
