indicating that bullying victims are twice as likely to carry firearms to schools as their classmates

has a rich history in country music woven into such songs as Dolly Partonrsquos schoolyard tale ldquoCoat of Many Colorsrdquo Johnny Paycheckrsquos workplace fantasy ldquoTake This Job and Shove Itrdquo and Martina McBridersquos interpersonal dramas ldquoIndependence Dayrdquo ldquoConcrete Angelrdquo and ldquoA Broken Wingrdquo One could argue that the volume of songs about country pride is a direct response to artists feeling that mainstream media has dismissed the genre for decades

Brownrsquos ldquoLearningrdquo in which he documents being beaten by a stepfather and ridiculed by classmates for his biracial heritage is a powerful modern example And he suggests that treatment is part of what has made him a bit mysterious as an adult He can be guarded in interviews he says as ldquoa protection thingrdquo

The nature of most journalism requires reporters to drop in for short bits of time with a subject and that works against the kind of relationship Brown needs to overcome his childhood programming

ldquoItrsquos not OK for anybody to be mean to anyone and it goes for any celebrity across the boardrdquo says Chris who will be recording a duet with New Kids on the Blockrsquos Danny Wood on Nov 7 ldquoKids are watching and therersquos so much junk on the internet and TV that kids are learning from We need more artists and politicians in the world who are good role models to the kids who are watching their every moverdquo

Josh Turnerrsquos f irst faith-based set I Ser ve a Savior (MCA NashvilleUniversal Music Group Nashville) bows at No 2 on Billboardrsquos Top Country Albums chart (dated Nov 10) with 15000 equivalent album units (14000 in traditional album sales) in the week ending Nov 1 according to Nielsen Music

Savior also arrives at No 2 on Top Christian Albums marking the singer-songwriterrsquos first appearance on the tally

ldquoIrsquom floored God is goodrdquo Turner tells Billboard ldquoI had no expectations going into this project other than to make a record I was proud to share Irsquom especially thankful my fans have embraced it I want [listeners] to feel some hope and joy that maybe theyrsquove never experienced before even if they donrsquot understand where itrsquos coming from exactly Irsquod love for them to seek out truthrdquo

While Savior is Turnerrsquos first full-fledged Christian-based album hersquos no stranger to inspirational songs ldquoLong Black Trainrdquo his second Hot Country Songs entry and ldquoMe and Godrdquo (which hit Nos 13 and 16 in 2004 and 2007 respectively) appear in updated versions on the new set The bulk of the album features traditional hymns which Turner became familiar with while growing up in South Carolina including ldquoHow Great Thou Artrdquo (featuring Sonya Isaacs) ldquoAmazing Gracerdquo and ldquoGreat Is Thy Faithfulnessrdquo plus the iconic ldquoI Saw the Lightrdquo penned by Hank Williams

The title song which Turner co-wrote in 2016 led to the setrsquos creation ldquoThe thought of doing this album hadnrsquot even come to me yet and I was still

working on Deep South at the timerdquo Turner recently mused ldquoWhen it came time to actually record Savior I wanted it to feel new but also have the feel of an old-time hymn As things progressed I wanted it to be the title track

When Rachel Reinert announced her departure from Gloriana in January 2016 she fully intended to move in a different direction She did not anticipate that that direction would be down

ldquoA lot of people expected that I would turn around and have a record deal and have opportunities and be releasing new music and all these things were going to come together for me instantlyrdquo she recalls The belief was that ldquoI would be able to build off of this really great stepping stone that I had with Gloriana and that just wasnrsquot the caserdquo

Instead Reinert felt shut out She had a d i f f ic u lt t i me b o ok i n g s on g w r it i n g appointments and people she thought were friends didnrsquot respond to her emails New artists popped up almost daily and seemed to vault past her She went more than two years without playing a live show and she eventually had to sell her house Meanwhile Reinert frequently read notes on social media from fans who thought she had quit the business entirely Somehow the career she desperately wanted seemed to be slipping out of her orbit and for reasons she couldnrsquot quite grasp

ldquoI wasrdquo she says ldquosuper super frustratedrdquoThe pressure was astronomical but that

also yielded a rather prophetic creative masterpiece ldquoDark Starrdquo written in the spring of 2017 encapsulates all the angst and mystery of her position while maintaining a ray of optimism that the downtime she experienced is exactly what she required

ldquoI had this whirlwind life from 18 to 26 and I didnrsquot really know strugglerdquo she notes ldquoNot to this degree I feel like I relate to people on such a deeper level now and this normalcy Irsquove experienced over the last three years has had such a huge impact on me [not only] as a person but also as a songwriterrdquo

ldquoDark Starrdquo came from exploring her story with co-writers ks Rhoads and Joe Pisapia on a day when they all were latching onto bittersweet musical sources the fragility of Neil Youngrsquos ldquoHarvest Moonrdquo the rainy-day pop of Nashville band The Silver Seas the moody swirl of Fleetwood Macrsquos ldquoDreamsrdquo and ldquoRhiannonrdquo and the languid melancholy of Chris Isaakrsquos ldquoWicked Gamerdquo

ldquoThat track creates a whole world of a genre that I aspire to in one songrdquo says Pisapia of ldquoWicked Gamerdquo

Pisapia had similarly left a band adult-alternative act Guster after eight years and his affinity for Reinertrsquos situation helped bring her issues and her emotional state into focus

ldquoI was fired up that dayrdquo says Reinert ldquoIt kind of turned into this whole thing of me talking about how lsquoI feel like Irsquom just falling through the atmosphere right nowrsquo rdquo

That led to galaxian metaphors and eventually to a recognition that she had become a dark star a cauldron of energy who was producing light that the public simply had yet to see

ldquoThat feeling of starting over is universalrdquo observes Rhoads ldquoWe can all feel that And then a question when yoursquore writing a song is how particular do you get I like to get away from [the real-life premise] just enough that you can tell a story and everybody else can apply their own story to itrdquo

The opening line mdash ldquoIrsquom not scared of the unknownrdquo mdash was a note from Reinert to herself and the rest of the lyrics explored some of the particular

fears that accompany fame and legacy Will I be forgotten Perhaps worse will I be remembered differently than I want to be

ldquoTherersquos just so much pressure on artists to be lsquoOK what now Whatrsquos nextrsquo mdash especially coming out of that world that she was in where yoursquore really geared toward the Top of the Pops kind of thingrdquo says Pisapia ldquoThatrsquos really scary to kind of go back to the reinvention phase Itrsquos like lsquoIrsquom over here You

canrsquot see me but Irsquom still here and Irsquom going to be better than everrsquo rdquo

While the ldquoDark Starrdquo verses alluded to her emotional state the chorus embraced the luminous possibilities in semi-galactic terminology It featured long notes that emphasized the purity of Reinertrsquos voice mdash a clarity akin to previous country hitmakers Suzy Bogguss and Jennifer Hanson mdash while moving across a chord structure (beginning with a one chord and moving to a five-minor) that embraced the haunting uncertainty

They pulled together the demo in unison and Reinert and Rhoads worked further on the lead vocal and lush tension-filled harmonies while Pisapia took off on a vacation

ldquoWe wanted four-part harmonies where certain notes are doing suspensions and sixths and things like thatrdquo says Rhoads ldquosort of in the Fleetwood Mac vein with really thick harmonies on some partsrdquo

P ro duc er Davis Naish wa s h i g h ly respectful of the demo particularly those de t a i le d h a r m o n i e s He a n d R ei n e r t reconstructed them faithfully on the master version enhancing them with additional performances to create a bit of a hypnotic choir effect

ldquoItrsquos three-part harmony in every way possible and then I probably had Rachel do each part four times so I would say therersquos probably anywhere from 16-24 tracks of us and some of those are us singing into the same mic together so thatrsquos even more voicesrdquo says Naish ldquoI truly just dissected what they did and then repeated it Itrsquos a masterful job of background vocalsrdquo

Naish initially replaced a banjo counter-melody from the demo with a more standard guitar then had Rob McNelley switch it back to banjo when Reinert balked

ldquoThatrsquos a totally non-negotiable item in this songrdquo says NaishViolinist Eleonore Denig hid a plucky six-piece string part in a handful of

creases and McNelley also threw in a short curvy guitar section that provides a slight melodic detour in the back half of the production

ldquoMy reference for the song is George Harrisonrsquos lsquoMy Sweet Lordrsquo so I really wanted a George Harrison moment to happen and that like fell in my laprdquo says Naish ldquoThatrsquos the thing that really tied a bow on it for merdquo

Reinertrsquos management 333 Entertainment launched ldquoDark Starrdquo to country radio via PlayMPE on Oct 9 It showcases the ringing expressiveness in her voice and finds acceptance in the uncertain periods that pock nearly every life And with that message it sets up a healing connection between Reinert and the listener

ldquoTherersquos no progress without that kind of strugglerdquo she reasons ldquoTherersquos no breakthrough without the breakdowns It makes me feel even more optimistic about my futurerdquo
