Sinatra to Brooks & Dunn to Vince Gill to Ray Charles, says Eldredge. And I loved Ray Charles. When I hear Ray Charles voice, I literally get chills.

By contrast, Rhetts rhythmic leanings were evident from the start. Part of his history includes doing hip-hop songs at the occasional concert by his father, singer-songwriter Rhett Akins, as a pre-teen, and Rhetts debut album had a handful of songs that played with rap and disco. His 2014 single Make Me Wanna, inspired by the Bee Gees Stayin Alive, increased his confidence in a country/R&B hybrid, and his new album Tangled Up, due Sept. 25 ventures into Motown, funk and hip-hop, testing boundaries that previously seemed unreachable for a country song.

We went all the way to the line [of acceptability], and we might have crossed it slightly, says Rhett of Tangled Up. I think the moment we might have crossed it slightly was when we were like, OK, I think were done, and I think we need to stop at these 13 tracks and put them out. Im that kind of guy, and Ive always been that kind of guy, that really loves going farther than I probably should.

One of the biggest differences between the two is their regional background. Rhett hails from Georgia, a state that has bred a long line of recent country hitmakers, including Jason Aldean, Brantley Gilbert, Luke Bryan and one-half of Florida Georgia Line, just for starters.

Eldredge grew up in the Midwest Paris, Ill., to be exact. Fewer country stars have graduated from there Illinois lineage includes Gretchen Wilson, Alison Krauss, David Lee Murphy and Suzy Bogguss though the region is a natural piece of the genres audience.

Iowas one of the countriest states ever, says Rhett Akins of Illinois neighbor.

Its one of the reasons that Eldredge named his new album Illinois, is-sued Sept. 11 after his home state. He also wrote the title track with Tom Douglas (The House That Built Me, Raise Em Up), weaving in the corn-fields, snow drifts and Little League baseball that inform his cultural history.

No matter how far you go in life, that place that you come from is what makes you who you are, says Eldredge. And Illinois made me who I am.

The Georgia/Illinois pairing of Rhett and Eldredge on the Suits and Boots Tour seems like a natural. Theyre close enough in career stature that they plan to flip a coin to establish the closing act on the first night and trade off the role after that, though theyll do a tandem set as a finale each evening that makes it a pure co-headlining arrangement.

Theyre in artistically similar places, bringing an R&B flavor to contempo-rary country, and in a visually similar spot, too, often wearing suits onstage. Which is one reason they chose the Suits and Boots moniker for the tour, though, if they wanted to rhyme, Brett and Rhett was available, too.

My idea was calling it Thomas Brett, says Rhett, but we wanted to have like a legit title, and I think [Suits and Boots] kind of fits.

The R&B material emphasizes the playful part of their nature. But the fash-ion component is meant to offset that with a little more weight.

People like Bradley Cooper in the movies I take em even more seri-ously, says Eldredge, when they throw a suit on.

Toby Keith visited with WIL St. Louis staff when he played the Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre on Sept. 5. From left are WIL assistant PD/music director Danny Montana, WIL personality Bo Matthews, Keith, WIL personality Jim Day and Show Dog Nashville vp promotion Rick Moxley.

Thomas Rhetts single Crash and Burn (Valory) steps 2-1 on Billboards Country Airplay chart (dated Sept. 26), drawing 47.2 audience impressions (up 1 percent), according to Nielsen Music.

The first single from Rhetts second studio album, Tangled Up, due Sept. 25, is his fourth Country Airplay No. 1, following It Goes Like This (three weeks on top in October-November 2013); Get Me Some of That (one, May 2014); and Make Me Wanna (one, March 2015). Burn marks Rhetts fastest trip to No. 1, reaching the summit in 23 weeks. His other chart-toppers took 29, 28 and 32 weeks, respectively.

Burn, co-written by Jesse Frasure and Chris Stapleton, boasts an R&B/pop influ-ence that Rhett felt was a bit of a reach for country radio. I seriously cant believe this is my fourth No. 1 in a row. [In between That and Wanna, Brantley Gilberts Small Town Throwdown, featuring Rhett and Jus-tin Moore, reached No. 8.] This one is my fa-vorite, though, because it was a gutsy call to release as a single, Rhett tells Billboard. Its so fun when you try something different and it works in a big way. I feel very blessed to be celebrating today.

Country radio has clearly embraced the vibe of Crash. This one was an instant hit, says WYCD Detroit PD Tim Roberts. Yeah, so its not the countriest record. It has a fun, soulful groove that sticks in your head. Listeners love it; thats all that matters. Roberts adds that country has traditionally been somewhat of a melting pot, anyway. Respectfully, I think that some well-meaning musicologists tend to overthink things. Our job has always been to serve music up listeners love, and they truly do with this song.

Echoes WKLB Boston PD Mike Brophey of Crash, Its just a great song. Its relatable, has solid tempo and is in heavy rotation, so thats a great

performance story. As far as it being unique, it certainly did not offend WKLB listeners; it had the opposite effect. We are enjoying an eclectic format with a lot of different sounds, so this song fits right in.

On Sept. 23, two days prior to the release of Tangled Up, Rhett will perform in concert at AT&T Stadium in Dallas. As part of the event, billed as Tangled Up in Texas, attendees (who, beforehand, would be wise to get in a good hamstring stretch) will attempt the world record for the largest-ever game of Twister.

Meanwhile, Stapleton continues his resur-gence on Top Country Albums, following the re-cent relaunch of his album Traveller (Mercury/Universal Music Group Nashville). Bolstered by three Country Music Association Award nomi-nations (album, new artist and male vocalist of the year), the set gains by 45 percent to 4,000 sold, claiming Greatest Gainer honors as it rises 20-13 in its 19th week.

NEW TOP 10s Cam collects her first top 10 on Hot Country Songs, as Burning House (Arista Nashville) climbs 11-8. The ballad lifts 22-19 on Country Airplay (18.9 million audi-ence impressions, up with 11 percent). Mad-die & Tae, whose Start Here debuted at No. 2 on the Sept. 19 Top Country Albums chart, achieve their second top 10 on Hot Country Songs, as Fly (Dot) floats 12-9; it bullets at No. 10 on Country Airplay (28.2 million, up

6 percent). The duos debut hit, Girl in a Country Song, peaked at No. 3 on Hot Country Songs and No. 1 on Country Airplay in December 2014.

CRAZY TALK Dylan Scotts Crazy Over Me (Curb) doesnt go for adds at country radio until Oct. 19, but the track, boosted by support from SiriusXMs The Highway, bows at No. 14 on Country Digital Songs. It starts with 16,000 first-week downloads sold.

SONGWRITERS, STAND UP! Nashville songwriters were encouraged during a National Music Publishers Association town hall meeting on Sept. 9 to make their voices heard as the government reviews an antiquated system that regulates royalties.

NMPA president/CEO David Israelite used slides and financial data to demonstrate that songwriters and publishers are in a David-and-Goliath bat-tle for fairness as consumers transition from a music-purchase economy to a streaming model. The $2 billion publishing industry spent $1.9 million to lobby Congress in 2014, just 2 percent of the $79.8 million investment that its adversaries, including Spotify, made in politicking. The latter business, valued at $8 billion by analysts, is four times the economic size of music publishers.

Hundreds of songwriters attended, including Bill Anderson, Ashley Gor-ley (Kick the Dust Up), Tom Douglas (The House That Built Me), Wood Newton (Bobbie Sue), Steve Bogard (Carried Away) and Lee Thomas Miller (Crushin It). Israelite encouraged them to stand together as a com-munity and to enlist with writer agencies particularly the Nashville Song-writers Association International as their representatives work to revise procedures and rate mechanisms that were established in older eras. Copyright in the digital era is built upon a system that was started to solve player-piano disputes before even the radio became a public commodity. Songwriter roy-alties are doled out in smaller percentages in the United States than in other developed countries, according to Israelite.

One of the biggest issues, he said, is that every congressman has broadcast-ers among their constituents, while songwriters are concentrated in smaller areas. Legislators are often unaware of songwriters who grew up their districts and unfamiliar with the economics of their business.

Put a songwriter in front of a member, said Israelite. Theyll listen to us.

MUSIC NOTESThis years nominees roll call for the Country Music Association Awards seems to have moved toward a Grammy-style list with support for finalists who didnt necessarily connect with mainstream country radio in the last year. While such CMA categories as vocal duo, video and musical event have often featured non-hit artists and material, the entertainer, album and male and female vocalist categories are all populated with at least one artist who hasnt had a top 10 single dur-ing the eligibility period, including Kacey Musgraves, Chris Staple-ton, Garth Brooks and Lee Ann Womack. Granted, three of those acts reached No. 1 or No. 2 on the Top Country Albums chart, and all have had hits as an artist or song-writer in the past. Still, it suggests CMA voters are taking the time to look beyond radio playlists to judge whats working, creatively and/or financially, in the format.

Dierks Bentley is expanding his Whiskey Row restaurant and bar: A new franchise opens Sept. 17 in Tempe, Ariz., less than 7 miles from the first Row locale in Scottsdale. Established in tandem with Riot Hos-pitality, the joint offers games, alcohol and food. A third Whiskey Row is re-portedly planned for Chicago. Additionally, the RFD-TV music series Larrys Country Diner will come to life as a restaurant and entertainment venue in the Nashville area, with groundbreaking set for Sept. 16 on U.S. Highway 70.

Trace Adkins, Colt Ford and Aaron Lewis are set to appear Sept. 16 at Brantley Gilberts Chattanooga Unite: A Tribute on the River. The concert pays hom-age to five soldiers who were slain at their base on July 16. The concert wraps a day of activities that includes a parade, performances by Jamey Johnson and Harry Connick Jr., and a memorial event MCd by Samuel L. Jackson.

Canaan Smith is apparently a good fit with both listeners and brands. The Dickies clothing company has tabbed the newcomer as a spokesman for its denim line. The association comes as he prepares for his first headlining tour, an 11-date club romp that begins Nov. 6 at Coyote Joes in Charlotte, N.C., and wraps Dec. 11 at the Revolution Music Room in Little Rock, Ark.

Mention Michael Rays sophomore single to someone who has never heard it, and youre likely to get an eye roll over Real Men Love Jesus.

The title suggests that its more a gospel song than a country one, but after a listen or two, its clear that the subject matter is a little more earthbound.

This song is not a Jesus song, Warner Music Nashville (WMN) senior vp A&R Scott Hendricks insists. Its not. I know there have already been some people who have had a little bit of a kickback on it, but you know what? They better be watching out for lightning.

The song does indeed incorporate a touch of religion, but its real focus is the kind of bal-anced character that, in Rays view, the good Lord would approve of in an all-American male.

Its about being a good man, and the equalizing of being tough and being sensi-tive, says Ray. This song embodies a lot.

If the title Real Men Love Jesus sounds like a bumper sticker, theres a reason. Song-writer Brett Warren (Little Bit of Every-thing, Red Solo Cup) saw that phrase on two different fenders while driving to a song-writing appointment in 2014, and it was al-most as if he was receiving guidance from above.

When I saw the second one, I said, I just need to write that song, recalls Brett.

He barely waited for his co-writers to sit down, according to Lance Miller (Drink to That All Night, Beer With Jesus), be-fore introducing the title to the group, which included brother Brad Warren (Highway Dont Care, Wrong Baby Wrong) and co-writer Adam Sanders (Hell of a Night, Aint Worth the Whiskey). And they trusted Bretts enthusiasm.

When he gets passionate about a title, it makes us all pay attention, be-cause he can be a good leader in the room when the right ideas there, says Miller. And that happened that day.

That doesnt mean there wasnt resistance. Brad expected it would be a gospel song and was inclined to pass. But he turned the tables on himself and dove in on it.

I was going through a time there where my motto was consider the op-posite, because my instincts are so wrong so often, he says. Instead of saying, No, I went, Yeah. If Im thinking no, its got to be a great idea.

And it was. Bretts focus was more on the real men portion of the title than on the Jesus part, and he suggested that they create a list of all the at-tributes that make up a real man and try to put them in a three-minute song.

I got two sons and two daughters, explains Brett. I wanted to make a list of everything I want my boys to be, and everything I want the boys to be that my daughters are going to marry.

As a result, it became a mix of the rugged and the tender. On one hand, the guy they hold up is the ultimate mans man he likes football and cowboys, works long hours and isnt afraid to get his hands dirty. On the other hand, hes sensitive enough to call home without a reason, to profess his faith and to say I love you without embarrassment.

The irony is the guy in the song is way more manly than I am, admits Brad. And, by the way Brett, Lance and Adam, Ill speak for them, too this is the kind of guy we want to be, but not necessarily the guy we al-ways are.

Brett decided to demo the song at a future session, though Brad thought it wasnt a likely hit and that they should save it for another day. For a second time in the process, he went against his instincts and moved forward with the song at that session. Brad patterned the guitar intro after a 1992 Ozzy Osbourne single, Mama, Im Coming Home (No. 2, Mainstream Rock), and was surprised with the final demo.

When we got it back, I was like, Wow, thats the shit, he says. I hadnt realized it before.

Thomas Rhett was the first artist to glom onto Real Men Love Jesus in summer 2014, and he started playing it live while he had it on hold. But when his sophomore album went in more of an R&B direction, he let go of it in early 2015. Several acts were interested, but Ray was the most passionate after hear-ing Real Men on a demo CD compiled by WMN vp A&R Cris Lacy. Rays grandfather, Amos Roach, had died Feb. 4, 2015 just nine days after WMN released Rays debut single, Kiss You in the Morning, to radio and Real Men hit Ray while the wounds were still fresh.

It reminded me of my grandfather and my dad and the guys that raised me, he says. One of the lines that stuck out to me [was] in the chorus, To say I love you, they dont need a reason

Ray liked it enough that he talked the song up with some of his fellow artists, and Love and Thefts Stephen Barker Liles called Brad to lobby on his behalf. The writers gave the song to Ray, and he recorded it during the final round of sessions for his debut album at Nashvilles Ocean Way Studios. Hendricks

stacked the arrangement with several non-standard guitars two 12-strings and a nine-string and they created enough vibration in the track that the musicians kept embellishments to a minimum.

The hardest thing was to get all those string things to work together so that its not just one big wash of stringed instruments, says Hendricks.

The gritty weight of the song coupled with the rich texture of those gui-tars immediately set it apart as they put the finishing touches on the album.

The first go-through with the band, one of the guys was like, This is going to be great, recalls Ray. You could just feel it. It was one of those moments in the studio that stood out in the whole recording process.

Ray practically guaranteed that the emotion would be there when he cut his final vocals on Real Men. The background wallpaper on his cellphone is a photo of his grandfather, so he turned off the ringer and held the device while he delivered the song.

That emotional content is a major reason WMN shipped it to broadcasters through Play MPE on Aug. 24. Early believers brought it to a No. 59 debut on Country Airplay, but it slipped to No. 61 in its second week on the list. The label expected such resistance, though feedback from people who worked Carrie Underwoods Jesus, Take the Wheel provided some confidence. There were a lot of people who said that would never f ly, notes Hendricks.

For their part, the writers are convinced that Real Men has its best chance in the hands of Michael Ray.

I know that we got the right guy singing it, says Miller. I cant wait to see what hes able to do with it.

  • BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE SEPTEMBER 14, 2015 | PAGE 14 OF 18

For all the successes Jewel has enjoyed in her professional life, its a seemingly rich inner life that drives the singer-songwriter, and has been the source of both her greatest pain and her biggest victories. Much of that life is explored both on her latest album, Picking Up the Pieces (her first for new label home Sugar Hill), and in her memoir, Never Broken: Songs Are Only Half the Story, due Sept. 15.

The album, which dropped Sept. 11, is her first set of new material since her second Big Machine Label Group (BMLG) country project, Sweet and Wild, in 2010. In the interim, she gave birth to son Kase, now 4; released a pair of childrens albums and a holiday set; and amicably divorced rodeo star husband Ty Murray after six years of marriage and 16 as a couple. While some of the songs on Picking Up the Pieces pre-date the divorce, the pain of the split finds its way into others. With the new set, Jewel aimed to return to the folky sound that put her on the map two decades ago with her multiplatinum 1995 debut re-lease, Pieces of You. The current project was recorded in Nashville, where Jewel, 41, has lived with Kase for two-and-a-half years. Billboard Country Update sat down with Jewel to chat about music, motivation and more esoteric things.

In the albums liner notes, you thank Nashville producer Paul Worley for kicking me in the butt by backing out and making me produce this CD. What happened there?[Paul] came in a week before pre-production and said, Im not going to do the record, and I was pissed. He said, Youre going to thank me You need to be doing this. I just thought he took another gig and was bail-ing on me, and I was pretty upset about it.

Ive produced some of my own records myself, but they werent this type of work. Im comfortable in the studio, but I always felt I had more to learn from other people than what I knew on my own. That has helped me a lot as an artist, but at the same time it can also hold you back. Paul felt the same thing. He felt no one should put a filter on me, that I had the vision for what I wanted. It really was the kick in the pants I probably needed.

Was producing yourself a good experience? It was. I knew I didnt want to have a label when I started recording and would shop it at the end. I wanted no influences. Whenever you have anybody around, no matter how transparent of a producer they are, it is a filter that you become interpreted through. My job is to serve emotion, and if emotion gets diluted, I didnt do my job. I wanted this record to feel like there was something from my vein to your vein.

During your time on BMLG, was country music a comfortable fit for you?I loved it. Its funny, when I [first] got signed when I was living in a car I didnt know a thing about the business. So I went to my label and said, Can we get You Were Meant for Me played on country radio? Its a country song. Its a shuffle. Im shocked it got played on pop radio. I thought it should be a natural fit for country, but Atlantic Records in New York didnt have a relationship with country radio. Its then that I learned theres these completely separate systems.

When I first came out, country radio was Shania Twain and Faith Hill. It was a lot more pop than what I was. [But] as a singer-songwriter, I knew I had to get into the country business, because it was the only place I could tell stories. [So] it was an awesome experience for me. Its felt like a great home. For the first time in my life I was asked, Why did you write this lyric? [by country] radio. [At pop radio], I was just asked, Whats your favorite nail color? Im like, Really? Did you ask Beck that?

Will anything be worked to radio from this project?I went into the studio thinking, Im not going to think about radio. Im not going to think about genre. Im not going to think about tempo. To get that out of my head and make a record pure and independent from all the stuff you learn over 20 years was really difficult. My Fathers Daughter is being taken to Ameri-cana. Country has changed a lot. Right now where its at, I cant really see any of my stuff getting on there.

How did your collaboration with Dolly Parton on My Fathers Daugh-ter come to be?As a kid growing up with an outhouse, my heroes were always Dolly Parton and

Loretta Lynn. They were the only other icons Id heard of that were raised similarly to me. I liked that they had the courage to say, This is exactly who and what the hell I am. So I got the courage to ask her to sing on the record, and she agreed. I never thought Id be producing Dolly Parton on a record. That was weird.

Does she take direction well?Shes such a pro and everything you would hope she would be: Shows up 15 minutes early, has her notes, knows her parts, and shes just like, Honey, dont you be nervous about bossing me around. You get what you need out of me while you got me. You dont know how much longer Im going to be around. Sweeter than hell.

How was collaborating with Rodney Crowell on It Doesnt Hurt Right Now?We wrote a couple of songs together and just had a

real poets affinity for each other. Hes a real craftsman. Its not often youre around people in the business that care so much about the craft. A lot of people just want to be famous.

What can your fans can expect from the book?People often ask me, How did you go from being raised in the sticks, to being abused, to moving out at 15, to being homeless at 18? I did it really consciously. Imperfectly, but I knew at 15 girls like me end up in the ditch, pregnant or in an abusive relationship. I wanted to beat those odds. If I was to look at nature vs. nurture, how would I ever know my nature by how I was nurtured? And if you become what youre raised around, what did that say about my future and my hopes? Could I re-nurture myself? I started asking myself those questions at 15, writing them down in my journal. Id read a bunch of philosophy. It set me on a path, and writing for me just became my medicine and my way of tracking my progress. It accidentally became a career, but its never what I considered my greatest success. My greatest success is that I kept standing up and I never let my life make me bitter ...

My life has been an open story in a lot of ways, but theres a lot of things I went through that I never shared, and the worst things I suffered were at the height of my career. I kept my mouth shut and got about rebuilding and never talked about it. So this is really the first time I talk about what those setbacks were [includ-ing] being millions of dollars in debt by the time I was 33.

At the back of the book I list 20 takeaways that helped me overcome agora-phobia and all kinds of things. Im now building a website based on those 20 things. I created these exercises for myself to help retrain my brain, change my way of thinking and challenge my beliefs. They changed my life. I really believe if you have tenacity and a willingness to say, I am accountable. I am not a vic-tim, then you can create tremendous change in your life.

    Country Indicator

CHARTS LEGENDRANKINGSCountry Airplay is ranked by total audience impressions for the week ending Sunday based on monitored airplay of 150 stations by Nielsen BDS. Audience totals on the chart are derived, in part, using certain Arbitron Inc. copyrighted Persons 12+ audience estimates (under license 2015, Arbitron Inc.) Country Indicator is tabulated using reported playlists and Nielsen BDS-monitored airplay at 105 stations, ranked by total plays.

BULLETSl Awarded on Country Airplay to titles gaining audience or remaining flat from the previous week. A song will also receive a bullet if its percentage loss in audience does not exceed the percentage of monitored

station downtime for the format. Titles that decline in audience but increase in detections will also receive a bullet if the total audience erosion for the week does not exceed 3%. Bullets are awarded on Country Indicator to titles gaining plays or remaining flat from the previous week.

TIESOn Country Airplay, if two songs are tied in total audience, the song with the larger increase in audience is placed first. On Country Indicator, if two songs are tied in total plays, the song with the larger increase in plays is placed first.

RECURRENTSOn Country Airplay, descending titles below No. 10 in either audience or detections are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks, provided that they are not still

gaining enough audience points to bullet or if they rank below No. 10 and post a third consecutive week of (non-bulleted) audience decline, regardless of total chart weeks. On Country Indicator, descending, non-bulleted titles below No. 10 are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks or if they post a third consecutive week of decline in plays after 10 weeks.

HOT SHOT DEBUTAwarded to the highest-ranking new entry on Country Airplay and Country Indicator, respectively.

MOST ADDEDThe total number of new adds officially reported to Billboard by each reporting station, or by an automatic-add threshold (seven plays for the first time in a chart tracking week, according to Nielsen BDS) for stations that do not report adds.

MOST INCREASED AUDIENCE/PLAYSMost Increased Audience on Country Airplay and Most Increased Plays on Country Indicator list the songs with the greatest week-to-week increases in total audience or plays, respectively.

AIRPOWERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles ranking inside top 20 in plays and audience rankings for the first time, with increases in both plays and audience.

BREAKERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles achieving airplay (at least one detection) at 60% of reporting stations for the first time.
