BELAHAVI (Karnataka), Sept 15:
The country is in the midstof a dramatic change and deci-sions taken today will influencenot just the immediate future butperhaps the rest of the century,President Ram Nath Kovindsaid on today.
Speaking at the platinumjubilee celebration of KarnatakLaw Society and RajaLakahamgouda Law Collegehere, Kovind said the aspira-tions of the country's youth werechanging fast.
"We have a young, talentedpopulation and an excitingeconomy brimming with oppor-tunities. In the previous quarter,our GDP grew at 8.2 per cent,which indicates our pace as wellas our potential," Kovind said.
"With the fourth industrialrevolution upon us, how we liveand work is changing so are theaspirations of our young peo-ple," he added.
In this context, the President
said that the educational institu-tions must become compatiblewith the quest for innovationand excellence.
The government, he said,was taking steps to facilitate thisand the process of overhaulingthe regulatory framework forhigher education and upgradingit to meet contemporary needswas underway.
"I am confident it will bearfruit soon," he said.
He said graded autonomyhad been granted to 60 top uni-versities, and a decision had alsobeen taken to promote 20 insti-tutions of higher education as'institutes of eminence' to grantthem recruitment and curriculaflexibility in order to reach best-in-class global standards.
After a competitive process,the first few of these institutes ofeminence were announcedrecently, he said.
The President further saidthe law of nature teaches every-
one discipline and orderliness,and the law that humans write isthe basis of civilisation.
"Law is not a career, it is acalling. Much more than a meansto earn a livelihood, it is a mecha-nism to assist the cause of justiceto help the poorest and mostunfortunate among us, and tobuild a society and nation definedby adherence to rules, norms andfairness," he said.(PTI)
