Before you can par cipate in any 4‐H horse project or ac vity, you must have 6 hours of Equine Educa on delivered by a Kenton County Cer fied Horse Volunteer Leader, between

September 1, 2017 and April 1, 2018.

Horse Educa on hours are earned by a ending horse club mee ngs.

Kenton County has two horse‐related clubs. The Blazin’ Bridles club promotes riding skills. For youth with a love of horses, but who don’t own a horse there is the Ghost Riders club. In this club, youth learn about horses, but do not ride. Any child age nine and older is invited to join the fun. Club members gain a sense of belonging from the comradeship with others of similar interests and varying ages.

The horse program helps youth develop desirable character traits including leadership, ini a ve, self‐reliance, responsibility and sportsmanship. They become be er prepared for ci zenship responsibili es by working in groups and suppor ng projects and ac vi es. This program also helps 4‐H members enhance their horsemanship knowledge and skills and learn more about the business of breeding, raising and training horses, mules or ponies.

In addi on, 4‐H members develop a greater affec on for, and humane a tude toward, animals; gain an apprecia on for horseback riding as a healthy, wholesome form of recrea on; and learn more about safety precau ons to prevent injury to themselves, their mounts, and others. Other county events include the ride/drive program and county fair. District‐wide events include horse judging contests, horse shows and horsemanship camps. State‐level compe ons include special contests and shows during the summer.
