"Action" on ABC-TVDick Clark production,

re The Action Is," willon ABC-TV as a new

Lday through Friday series,r_arting June 28 from 2 to 2:30;

The series will feature twoguests each day, plus a

group of "regulars" - singersand dancers. Steve Alaimo andLinda Scott are set as "regu-lars" but Clark hasn't assignedthe emcee role yet.

Clark himself will act as ex -executive producer with GeneLaw as producer and Hal Gallias director. The show will usea variety of location shots(Franklie Avalon on a beach,Jan and Dean at 'a barn dance,etc.) in addition to airing froma studio.

Meanwhile, the trade iswondering what happened toClark's plans to air an hourlong special, also tagged"Where the Action Is", onCBS -TV. One report has itthat Jim Aubrey's departurefrom CBS also spelled the de-mise of the Clark program.The ABC-TV series only runsa half hour, but the formatdescription strongly resemblesthat announced for the CBSspecial.

Whopping Grossfor Beatles in NYCBeatles concert promoter,

Sid Bernstein, announced lastweek that a gross of $212,000"has already been put in thebank," against the total po-tential gross of $250,000 forNew York's Shea StadiumBeatles concert next August.

And the demand for tickets

continues to swell, with par-ticularly heavy requests com-ing in now from such cities asWashington, Baltimore, Cleve-land and Boston. Bernsteinsaid he will seek permissionfrom Beatles manager, BrianEpstein, to stage a second SheaStadium concert to accommo-date the out-of-towners, andwould hope to open individualticket headquarters in eachcity. The Shea concert, by theway, carries a maximum tickettag of $5.65

Surf Tie -InThe new Gee Whopper surf

board and the much publicizedsidewalk surfing (also knownas skateboarding) were in thenews this week. MGM Recordsmade a tie-up with the manu-facturer of Gee Whopper, asort of junior version of theWest Coast -originated form ofsurfing and the tie-in is basednaturally enough, on a recordcalled "Gee Whopper," byGlenn Sutton. Meanwhile,Bobby Rydell and his mana-ger, Frankie Daye, are excitedabout 12 -year -old NormaTracey, and her "Skate BoardSong," on the Day -Dell label.It's handled by Jamie-Guydenand reportedly going greatguns.

Verve -Folkways SetMGM -Verve has formed a

new wing to be known asVerve -Folkways Records, un-der which a selected numberof items from the vast Folk-ways folk catalog will be re-leased.

Previn to VictorAndre Previn will record as

both a classical and pop art-ist for RCA Victor, accordingto a joint announcement fromVictor's pop a. & r. divisionvice president, Steve Sholes,and Roger Hall, manager ofRed Seal a. and r. Victor alsoannounced last week eightnew album additions to its"best of" series (seven popand one classical) for July re-lease. Atlantic-Part 2Atlantic has released four

new LP's by Hank Crawford,the Grassella Oliphant Quar-tette, Nat Adderley and EarlHines, to complete its springLP program which commencedearlier with sets by SolomonBurke, Herbie Mann and "Kil-ler" Joe Piro. Campaign be-hind this group includes spotradio, in-store display andtrade ads, said Len Sachs, di-rector of Atlantic LP sales andmerchandising. 20th Buys IntoFreddie Film

Twentieth Century FoxFilms have bought intoFreddie and the Dreamers'new picture, "Cuckoo Patrol",now being made in England.

Originally produced underthe aegis of Grand NationalFilms in Britain, 20th Fox hasadded $300,000 to the budget,and for this, picks up worlddistribution rights on "CuckooPatrol". They are also nego-tiating a seven year movie dealfor Freddie and the Dreamers.

It is hoped that "CuckooPatrol" will be completed andready for U.S. distribution intime for Freddie and theDreamers Autumn tour here,probably in late October.

Herman's TourAgent Frank Barsalona has

set additional dates for Her-man's Hermit's current visithere, and is working on plansto bring them back for a Julytour, with Wayne Fontana andthe Mindbenders.

Following their shot on theEd Sullivan Show (June 6),Herman's Hermits will playthree days at the New YorkParamount from June 11 thru13. These dates will be pre-ceded by one nighters in otherparts of the country.

The group will return to theU.S. on July 21 for a fourteenday tour, followed by threedates at the Atlantic City SteelPier from Aug. 9-11. Televi-sion slots for that period arecurrently being negotiated.

CHANGED SOUND. Bobby Vee has thesame face, same appearance, and exactlythe same cordial personality he's alwayshad. But he doesn't have the same voice.

He still lives in Fargo, North Dakota,though he'll be moving permanently to theWest Coast, pretty soon. He still has apenchant for getting up early and goingfishing on the twin lakes in his home dis-trict-a hobby he's enjoyed since toddlingdays. And he still records for Liberty, withwhom he had his first hit, "Devil OrAngel." The only problem was that hehasn't been making hit records.

Then wham! Out of the blue, Bobby Veestaked his chips on a winner, which,ironically enough, wasn't cut at the Lib-erty studios in Hollywood, but in London,England, under the supervision of EMIand using their own facilities.

This disc, "Keep On Trying", finally putsan end to those ghastly gossips who, re-membering the old days, point accusingfingers at Bobby Vee and tell him he's try-ing to copy the late Buddy Holly.

BOBBY PLEASED. The record is almoststraight R & B. It's a ballad with a beatthat builds up to a very Tamla-Motownclimax. Needless to say, Bobby is delightedwith its success so far, and even stuck hisneck out to say that if it wasn't a hit, he'sstill pleased with himself for making theeffort.

"I'd gotten into a pretty sticky position,"he commented between long gulps of acoke. "My stuff was turning stale. I didn'thave a hand in the market. I needed to

"As you know I'm under contract toLiberty, and Snuffy Garrett produced allmy discs. We had a great run. Much longerthan I originally thought. But when Ineeded to change, Snuffy couldn't comethrough with the kind of thing I wanted.For almost two years, we tried ana pro-duced nothing spectacular.

"Then just recently, Snuffy left Liberty,although he's still producing Gary Lewisdiscs on an independent basis. I was final-ly free to throw in all my own ideas.

THE BRITISH SOUND. "I'd recorded inEngland before. In fact, the disc was asmash there and didn't happen here. Itwas "A Forever Kind of Love". I enjoyedworking in British studios. On my lasttrip there, quite a few months ago, I de-cided to record again. I had quite a fewnumbers in mind. One of them was "KeepOn Trying". There were some rock thingstoo.

"I used the EMI studios in London, andthe session was produced by Ron Richardsand George Martin. Boy, are they terrific!I wondered what the reaction to the discwould be. I'm thrilled to discover the re-sult. It's being released in England acouple of weeks from now".

Why did Bobby go the R & B route?He certainly didn't deny that this was thecourse he was aiming for. "Well, I guessin all the excitement, most people forgotthat I've always loved R & B music, andas long as I had hits, I had to continue inthe same vein", said Bobby. "But I prac-iced. Whenever I had the chance. Theneventually, I tried it out on record".

A DIFFERENT LIGHT. A hit disc givesBobby Vee a new lease on his career, andin his case, it throws a completely differ-ent light on it too.

Bobby has always had a good act, withplenty of variety, but he's kept it awayfrom anything with an R & B feel. Nowhe can include lots more songs like "KeepOn Trying" (which, incidentally, is notto be confused with the Impressions' hitof the same name).

Bobby's career started in 1959, when heand his group were asked to fill in on adate which should have been played bythe late Buddy Holly. They were prettysuccessful, and eventually Bobby metArnie Mills who became his personalmanager and still handles him. Bobbysigned with Liberty and had a successionof smashes like "Rubber Ball", "MoreThan I Can Say" "Take Good Care of MyBaby" and "How Many Tears." He formedhis own music company in association withArnie, and swung his way around theglobe to much loud applause.

SEPARATE CAREERS. In England, heteamed with the Crickets for a couple oftours. They'd been having a pretty roughtime, and he did it to help them out. Theywere and still are great friends, but be-cause it was the Crickets, Bobby couldn'tward off the accusing fingers. He cut analbum with them, and they all playeddates in the U.S. too. Now they don't worktogether anymore-each having careers oftheir own.

"I didn't purposely intend to sound likeBuddy Holly" he said. "It just happenedthat way-the pronunciation of certain ex-pressions maybe. There was a time whena lot of singers sounded like that. TheCrickets still do, but that's their intention,and they have every reason to do it".

Bobby Vee is still the same guy-onlyhe finally grew up this year because therecord buying public gave him a breakand allowed it.

STRANGE AND GROOVY. Then suddenly it happened here."Go Now" by the Moody Blues. No one was more delighted than"Music Business," because we'd flown the record in from Englandat the beginning of the New Year. We tipped it as a winner, whichwasn't really a terribly difficult forecast as it hit the top of theBritish charts.

We saw the Moody Blues on television too. They had a bitin "Hullabaloo" before it recessed for the summer. They're avery strange looking group in a groovy kind of way. There arefive Moodies. They don't always dress alike, but sartorially theyalways look good. They wear Italian inspired shoes and brushtheir hair over to the sides of their heads. When they pose forphotographs, their faces look like they were cast in stone andtheir eyes have a passive look.

Musically, they are led by Denny Leine and Mike Pinder, whowrote both sides of their new release on London. Titles are"From The Bottom Of My Heart" and "And My Baby's Gone."It doesn't really sound too much like 'Go Now," which has adifferent background altogether.8

In England, when someone's doing the "moody bit," it looselymeans they're either putting you on or making excuses. It's beenpart of the English language for some time.DEAD SERIOUS. The Moody Blues is a good name for the kindof material they perform, but the quintet doesn't do it tongue incheek style. They're dead serious about their music.

Record wise, it began with "Go Now," which started scratchingat the British charts at the end of last year. The disc was writtenby Larry Banks, and sent to the group by WMCA's good guy,B. Mitchell Reed, who has since departed from the East Coast,and returned to station KFWB in Los Angeles.

Mitch, on a visit to England, flipped over the group and startedplugging them like crazy on his return to New York. "Go Now,"was originally written for a big band, so the Moody Blues sub-stituted voices for brass. The record was produced by Alex Mur-ray, who used to be Mickie Most's singing partner, and thenjoined British Decca as an A & R man.

The Moodies arrive here on June 12 for a four week tour withthe Kinks. This will be their second trip out of England-theirfirst was in April, when they headlined at the Paris Olympia.They only stayed 24 hours, but they managed to swing theirway through fourteen night clubs in addition to playing thedate!

Denny Laine is 20, and says he was born in a boat, but hasalways lived in Birmingham. His favorite artists are IrmaThomas, Bobby Bland, James Brown and the Beatles, but he'salso a keen jazz fan. He plays lead guitar and sings lead vocalswith the Moody Blues, and before joining them, led a groupcalled The Diplomats.WANTS LUXURY. Denny's personal ambition is to be either asongwriter or A & R man, and he would also like to live in luxuryfor the rest of his life. He adds at this stage that if necessary,he'll settle for plain comfort!

Mike Pinder is 23, plays electric piano and sings. His hobbyis recording, and he has a sound workshop in his home in Birm-ingham. He takes an active interest in their own discs, and he,too, would like to try his hand at producing some day. Mikewas the one who thought of the group's name. He said theywere originally called "The Moody Blues Five," but latershortened it.

He loves to travel, and spent some time in Germany, with agroup called The Crew Cats (not to be confused with the CrewCuts, who are American).

Clint "Whiskers" Warwick is 24, plays bass and sings. Beforeturning professional, he was a carpenter, and he's still interestedin woodwork. He digs Wilson Pickett and Jimmy Smith, andflips out of his head over the Beatles and Ray Charles.

He led his own group called The Rainbows before answeringthe blue call of the Moodies. Since joining them, he says hismain ambition is to carry on being as friendly with them ashe is now. He would also like to see the group making it reallybig.TUDOR STYLE. Graeme Edge is 23 and the group's drummer.He, too, is from Birmingham, but says that the group have allnow moved into a Tudor style house in Roehampton, South Lon-don. His kind of music is jazz-particularly modern, and he wantsto sing, though so far he hasn't had the opportunity. He likesdouble breasted jackets (on the long side), and short girls withlong straight hair. He joined the boys as a refugee from JerryLevine and the Avengers, because he said he got talked into itby Denny.

Final member of the Moody Blues is Ray Thomas, who isnicknamed "El Riot." He plays harmonica and sings, hatesrock 'n' roll, but digs the blues like crazy, especially countryblues, and artists like Sonny Terry and Sonny Boy Williamson.

"El Riot" derives from the time Ray led his own group inBirmingham, called El Riot and the Rebels. Ray is 23, likes togo fishing and eat Chinese food.THE BIG SOUND. The Moody Blues are terrifically critical ofboth themselves and their work. They go for big sounding vocalharmonies, and big sounding instrumental work. After the suc-cess of "Go Now" in England, it took five weeks from the releaseof their next disc, "I Don't Want To Go On Without You" beforeit hit the charts. They weren't worried, because they said thatchart success isn't everything.

But the Moodies are coming here in plenty of time to promote"From The Bottom of My Heart" . . . JUNE HARRIS

Roger Miller, five-Grammy winner,looks ahead to movies, more hits

and a possible TV show all his own.

THE ROUGH ROAD. Roger Miller has been through the mill

of the rough road, the fading hope and the fatigue. Now he'sjust tired from working so much and so hard. (It's no cinch totake down five Grammy Awards like Roger recently did.) "I'mtired right now and so is my wife," he said, as he talked fromthe home of his in-laws in San Antonio.

"Last night I could hardly get to the place I was supposed tobe going. I had to have five policemen open the way for me.That's tiring, I'll tell you. I've been resting here today but nowI've got to whip on my good suit and find my grin. I've got togrin a bit tonight for the folks in San Antonio and then I'llfly back home to California.

"I was born in Texas and raised in Oklahoma but I spent afew years in Nashville. I went there after I got out of the Armyin '57. I worked for seven years playing drums, guitar and hoe-down fiddle for a lot of the singers down there like Ray Price

and George Jones."No, I very rarely appeared on the Grand Ole Opry. In all

the seven years I was there they hardly let me on. Since thenI just sort of let them have it I guess. I had a record deal therefor a few years but I finally got dropped because I didn't getany hits. Things looked real bleak and I decided to try to getto the Coast and get into acting.

THE GOOFY SONGS. "I didn't have any money, but ShelbySingleton of Smash came along and made me a deal, signed meand gave me an $1,800 advance so I could move out to California.

I cut an album with Jerry Kennedy and we did a whole flockof goofy songs my other a. and r. men would never let me do.

"Now I'm working so hard I'm away from home two-thirdsof the year, and I'm really lazy. I'm certainly a lazy songwriter.I've finished a good many of my songs right at the record sessionand that includes "Dang Me," "King of the Road" and it sureincludes "Engine." I guess I just get inspired under pressure.Sometimes if you think too long about a song, you can thinkyourself right out of something good.

"I'll get an idea and just hang onto it for awhile. Like 'Kingof the Road,' I got from a highway sign I saw outside of Chicagowhich was advertising 'trailers for rent,' the first line of thesong. 'Engine' came from a short story title I saw in the SaturdayEvening Post. I didn't even read the story but the title kind ofstayed with me. But this last minute stuff is easy because wedon't have complicated sessions . . . no voices, just four or fiveof us sitting around in a circle. We just sit there and play.

SONGS FOR OTHERS. "I like songwriting. I've done it forother artists as well as myself. I'd say I wrote at least 200 songsfor other people before I really started recording myself. I hadrecords by Burl Ives, Patti Page and quite a few others. But Icould never be really happy with the interpretations otherpeople gave my songs. Not that I like my own singing. But Ifigure maybe I can deliver the message a little better. But I'llkeep right on writing stuff, maybe even for a show someday.I'd like that. But I've got to study myself some first. I like totry to grow all the time. And it takes a lot of looking at yourself.

"I tell you somebody who's going to really make it big whenhe looks at himself a little more and finds the direction. That'sWillie Nelson from Nashville. He's already had plenty of hits,like 'Funny How Time Slips Away.' But he's going to reallyfind himself like I had to. He'll sort of get in tune with theworld and he'll be there. He'll be so big I'll have to lay him low,

that's how big."Boudleaux Bryant, who wrote so many of those Everly

Brothers hits, is another who's made a contribution. Man, hashe made a contribution. And his wife, Felice, doesn't do badeither. Gale Garnett has a lot of real talent too. She runs inher own direction but she does the honest stuff and this is theage of honesty in music.

THE VERSATILE HERMITS. "I think the Beatles are prettycreative too. They're the only ones I've really liked exceptHerman's Hermits. Those boys are very versatile and they'renot following in somebody else's footsteps. With the RollingStones, I just don't think they're too professional. I rememberwhen I was in England, I was on a TV show with them. Theydidn't talk to me. But they kept pickin' away at their guitarswhile I was trying to rehearse. I finally had to tell them to`cool it.'

"Bob Dylan is alright I guess. He knows his own direction.He's like me in a way because he has no certain direction. With

me, if I boil it all down, I'd say I'm a country boy with worldlyideas. I try to approach the stuff with a hip attitude. I do whatI feel and I put a little philosophy into it.

BUSY SCHEDULE. "But I'll tell you, I don't know wherethere'll be time for all the writing I want to do. I want to domovies and I'm talking about that with some people right nowin California. I've never had any great bug to work in thetheater and you can get lost in TV drama but movies I wantto try. They want me back in England too, to do the LondonPalladium show and some TV specials.

"And next September I'll be doing the Hollywood Palace showwith Bing Crosby. In October. I'll be on with Andy Williamsin his show and in November I'll be on the new Dean Martin

show. And Bob Hope has asked me to go on his annual Christmastour of the bases. And we're even kicking around the idea ofme doing my own TV show one of these days." R EN G REVATT

Freddie Garrity strikes a semi-serious pose

Zany British group Freddie and the Dreamers play evenkookier roles as kitchen chefs, in their first major movie,"Seaside Swingers," to be released here via Embassy Pictureson June 16.

The movie stars the group with other notable young Britishnames such as John Leyton, Mike Same and Liz Fraser. Itis set in a seaside resort.

A bunch of young people decide to take summer vacationjobs at the seaside. Each person is assigned a duty, and partof the recreational program is a succession of talent contests.

Lead musical comedy roles are taken by Mike Same andJohn Leyton who stage some very Hollywood style produc-tion numbers, while Freddie and the Dreamers have kitchenfun with nutty stuff like "What's Cookin' ."

The movie is in color and runs for an hour and a half.Hardly any plot, but loads of good, clean, young fun-par-ticularly highlighted by Freddie and the Dreamers.

On the Set with BeatlesWatching the Beatles film-

ing one would think they'vebeen at it for years. I droppeddown to Twickenham recentlyto see how they are gettingon with their new epic andfound only John and Ringoon the set. Not all the boysare on the set each day. Eachis 'called' only for scenes inwhich he appears. The rest ofthe time they have off-athome.

When they are wanted fora 'take' the boys are pickedup from their homes early inthe morning by their ownchauffeur -driven Rolls Royces.After being made up anddressed they turn up on setwhere the scenery for the dayhas been built. Cameras andlighting are in place togetherwith an army of technicians.

Before the boys arrive andduring moments when theyleave the set, stand-ins taketheir places so that progressaround them is uninterrupted.Filming must be a very boringbusiness for the artists. In anyone day only a minute or lessof satisfactory film might becompleted! But the work andstanding around waiting foreverything to be just right sothe bit can be filmed, mighttake all day.

The day we called, twosmall scenes were in prepara-tion. In one, John and Ringoare hiding in the basementof an Indian restaurant fromRingo's pursuers who are afteran enormous ring he wearsthroughout the film. In theother Ringo, still being chased,falls through the roof of ahairdressing salon whereEleanor Bron is having herhair done.

Ringo's talent for humor wasobvious in the first scene. Hewas supposed to speak to awaiter who Ringo found stand-ing on his head in front of anancient boiler. The waiter,frightened by Ringo's appear-ance, runs to lie on a bed ofnails in the next room mutter-ing frightened curses. Ringofollows, looks surprised andthen leaves.

He suggested to director DickLester that he should try thebed of nails with his foot tosee whether it was reallysharp. In the next take he didjust this-result? Another

hilarious incident in what willbe a hilarious film.

Liberty President AlvinBennett flew into Londonearlier this week for contracttalks with EMI Records, Lib-erty's outlet in the UK. Lib-erty's deal with EMI is up forrenewal currently and thereis a flurry of activity aroundnew Liberty releases like thelatest Jackie De Shannonsingle.

Top new British group theKinks leave Britain for theirfirst American tour on June10th.

To date the boys have hadtwo smash hits here "YouReally Got Me," and "Tiredof Waiting." This week theirnewie, another composition bylead singer Ray Davies,"Set Me Free" is released to-gether with an enormous ad-vance order.

It is a slow mover and hassimilar guitar opening to theirprevious hits. It features theirusual moody, cynical style ofsinging and great guitar leadwork by Dave Davies. Flip -side is another Ray Daviesnumber "I Need You." TheKinks have been topping anationwide tour bill with theYardbirds and have packedhouses at each town.

After the end of the tour(May 23) the boys holiday fora few days, appear on topTV'er "Ready Steady Go," topromote the new single andthen appear in Paris for sev-eral days before coming yourway.

For the uninitiated thegroup are all very longhaired,appear on stage in red hunt-ing style jackets and whitefrilly shirts and are not kinky!

Although (as I previouslyreported) The Beatles shouldhave completed work on theirnew film "Help" this week,they have not. In fact at presstime (Friday 14th) they werestill in the studio involved inlong hectic sessions trying toget it all in the can.

I gather that most of theaction has now been filmedbut the boys have not yetcompleted work on the mu-sical numbers even thoughthese were recorded some timeback.

A recording studio sequencein the film has the boys mim-

ing to new numbers whichwill be on the soundtrack LPdue out in early August orlate July. On Monday nightthis week the boys cut a rushsession at EMI's Abbey Roadstudios specially for theAmerican market. Two titleswere cut-"Dizzy Miss Lizzie"and "Bad Boy."

Recording manager GeorgeMartin says that the two newtracks will be used to makeup a new American LP of thegroup. The balance of titleswill be ones released here butnot in the States.

The row between Britishand American entertainmentUnions over the banning ofsome UK stars from the Statesis not likely to be followed bya ban by the British Govern-ment. Even though these caseshave been brought to theirnotice they refuse to get in-volved in the hassle.

The VAF, however, who con-trol most British pop artists,are considering a ban. TheAmerican who became a starhere whilst still unknown inthe States-P. J. Proby-is

to return to America for TVdates in June. He has a newsingle due but release date isas yet uncertain.

Cilla Black has changed herhair style. Gone are the "mar-malade commas" which is howone columnist described herauburn hair. Instead she nowfeatures a curly bangs stylemuch prettier than her pre-vious coiffeur. . . . During theBeatles Continental tour thissummer the boys will play oneconcert in a Madrid bullring!

Tom Jones made a big im-pression on his first visit tothe States and returns for an-other Ed Sullivan appearanceon June 13th. He then planesback to this country for sev-eral dates before returningyour way on July 12th. Amongthe Stateside dates he has inthe book are a week in Murraythe Ks show in Brooklyn anda Shindig appearance.

Another new British group,Unit 4 Plus 2, whose firstrecord "Concrete and Clay,"was a smash, may come to theStates for a record promo tripin August.

The other night pianist BillyTaylor got excited about a newproject he's involved in. It'ssomething called "Jazzmo-biles," and is a plan to bringlive jazz into the areas of Har-lem that were torn by racialstrife during last year's "longhot summer."

Billy said that he contacteda number of name musiciansand received enthusiastic as-surances that they would playfor scale wherever and when-ever the Jazzmobiles wouldroll.

"It will mean something toa kid in a block in Harlem toknow that, say, Dizzy andguys of his stature came tohis block to play music."

Billy chuckled, then shookhis head as he recalled whatGerry Mulligan had told himafter enthusiastically agreeingto be a part of the Jazzmo-

bile experiment. "It'll be goodjust to get to go up to Harlemagain," Billy quoted Mulliganas saying.

"It'll be good to have himup there in more ways thanone," Taylor noted.

The idea is an interestingone for jazzmen, and shouldhave a salutary effect. But thebeauty part, of course, is notso much whether it will haveany effect, but rather the wayNegro and white musiciansare pitching in together towork for something they be-lieve in. Sometimes two menjust playing well together andenjoying each other's companycan speak volumes into youngminds and hearts. NARAS SHOW A GASI thought the NARAS TV

show last week was a ball . . .despite the troubles that wereaired in the papers and despitethe no-show of several of theheavy names who were tohave appeared. It was a well -paced and musically attractiveshow all the way. And thecomedy bits were very funny.I was proud to have been amember of NARAS as theshow played, and I must re-iterate here that this year'sawards and ceremonies, plusthis year's TV show, have putNARAS on the map for mymoney.

SHORT TAKES: Here are afew recent albums I've heardand dug. "The Pawnbroker"(Mercury SR 61011) is QuincyJones' first full-fledged motionpicture score, and it is a win-ner. Although a good part ofthe album is small group jazzthat sounds winged, there isenough scored and deeply -feltwritten material that is justlovely. As a bonus, Rod Stei-ger and Jaime Sanchez areheard in a bit of powerfuldialogue off the soundtrackthat will make your hair curl.

"Rio" by Paul Winter withLuiz Bonf a, Roberto Menescal,and Luiz Eca (Coluumbia CS

9115/CL 2315), a lovely, lan-guid album, has much of whatmade Stan Getz so famous sofast. The songs are pretty andhaunting, the rhythms are softand pulsing, and the blowingby Winter and his Braziliancohorts is so right for the ma-terial and the times.

"Bach Humbug!" by theGeorge Gruntz Quintet (Phil-lips PHM 200-162/PHS 600-162) is a witty exercise by oneof Europe's fine young jazz-men and a cracking goodgroup. Gruntz is a mature andswinging jazz pianist, and hismusical comments on Baroquemusic are delightful. Goodplaying by the group, too; es-pecialy flutist Emil Mangels-dorff.

"Guitar/Guitar" (ColumbiaCL 2330/CS 9130) featuresCharlie Byrd's unamplifiedguitar and Herb Ellis' electricguitar in a blend that is magi-cal to hear. The two playerscomplement each other verywell. And the material theyplay ranges from bossa novato down home blues to balladsto swingers. They are suchpros that everything they turna hand to comes alive. Ahoney of an album.
