Preparing and Displaying the Counting to 100th Day Gumball Banner and Magnets Kit Before introducing the Counting to 100th Day Gumball Banner and Magnets Kit, make copies of this Really Good Stuff ® Instructional Guide, cut apart the reproducibles, and file the pages for future use. Or, download another copy of it from our Web site at www.reallygoodstuff.com. Hang the Banner on a magnet receptive surface where students will be able to see and interact with it easily. Stage the Gumball Magnets in the glass globe on the Banner in a 100-grid pattern or randomly. Introducing the Counting to 100th Day Gumball Banner and Magnets Kit On the first day of school, gather students where they can see the Banner . Tell them that you will be choosing a student each day to be responsible for selecting the appropriate numbered Gumball Magnet to place in the chute on the gumball machine. Direct students’ attention to the Gumball Magnets at the top of the gumball machine, choose a student to find the Magnet labeled with the number 1, and have him or her place it at the top of the chute. Model how you would like students to tell the number of the day by saying, “Today is day number 1.” If you want to introduce ordinal numbers, you can add, “It is the first day of school.” Indicate that each day the class will count together up to that day’s number as the student points to each Gumball Magnet in the chute. Have students brainstorm how they can find out how many days are left until 100th Day. Indicate that when all of the Gumball Magnets have been placed in the chute, it will be 100th Day and time to celebrate. Daily Count and Color Copy and distribute the Counting to 100th Day Gumball Reproducible. Each day, remind students to color in the gumball that corresponds with the Magnet that has been placed in the chute on the Banner . Encourage students who need more support to point directly to the gumball on their reproducible as the student points to the Magnet on the Banner . Ask students to point to each gumball on their reproducible as the class counts together each day. Have students store the reproducible in a folder for easy access. Clap and Tap for Fives and Tens As more Magnets are placed in the chute, have students practice counting the number of days that have passed by 5s and 10s. Have students look for a color pattern along the gumball chute to identify that all fives are green and all tens are red. When counting the Magnets together, direct students to clap each time they say a factor of 5, and tap their knees when they say a factor of 10. Keeping Track Copy the Keeping Track Reproducible. Record students’ names in the left-hand column. Each time a student is chosen to find the day’s Magnet, place a check mark in the box next to his or her name. Once the chart is filled, make a second copy, and begin again. Gumball Math Booklet Copy and distribute the Gumball Math Reproducible. Have students write the number of the day and complete the activities on the reproducible using the Banner or their Counting to 100th Day Gumball Reproducible as a guide. Instruct the student who selects that day’s Magnet to review the answers with the class after he or she place another Gumball Magnet on the chute. Each week, month, or on 100th Day, staple the Gumball Math Reproducibles together, and send them home. Hundreds Chart Copy and distribute the Hundreds Chart Reproducible. Each time a Magnet is moved to the chute, direct students to find the day’s number (5, 10, 15, and so forth) on the reproducible. Instruct students to color the boxes for factors of 5 in one color and for factors of 10 in another color. Encourage students who need more support to point to the numbers on the reproducible until they reach the day’s number. As more Magnets are placed on the chute, pose 100-grid riddles for students to solve. For example, tell the students: I am two jumps down and three jumps to the left from today’s number, what number am I? (If you started with 5, their number should be 22.) I am number 27. If I moved to the number that is 10 more, where would I be? I am number 14. If I moved to the number that is 10 less, where would I be? Challenge students to make up their own riddles for the class to solve. 100th Day Gumball Celebration Celebrate 100th Day and the completion of the Banner with a fun gumball celebration. For instance: • Purchase 100 gumballs and use them as prizes for solving math problems using the number 100. Allow students some gum-chewing time to enjoy their prizes. • Generate a list of 100 new gumball flavors and their colors. Encourage students to add some silly ones like asparagus (green), dog bone (tan), or worm (brown.) • Have students write stories with the title of What I Would Do with 100 Gumballs, and then encourage them to share the stories with the class.
