Pastor Ed, Pernelle and Fellow Church Members,
My family would like to extend to you a “thank
you” for your care and concern during my recent
medical issues. My last appointment with the
doctors in Pittsburgh went well with no changes to
my vision and we are hoping to maintain or have
the results even a little better during my upcoming
appointment in a few months.
Also, thank you for the continued prayers for my
brother, Wayne. He has a long journey ahead of
himself and every prayer makes a difference.
It means quite a bit to our family members to
know our church family is there for us and cares in
a time of need. We are truly blessed to be part of
such a wonderful congregation. Also, John and
Catherine Barndt and Patty Troy, I owe each of
you a special thank you for your much appreciated
thoughtfulness during this time.

Friedens Lutheran Church,
A donation was made to the Cemetery Fund in
memory of our Dad, John Matkoskey at the
direction of my dad’s request.
Even though he didn’t belong to a church he
praised the Lord and served his family, friends and
community in any way he could, as the Lord
wanted him to.
We will miss him very much, but were blessed to
have him for 91 years.
We are at peace knowing he has a place to rest
next to my Mom and brother in Friedens Cemetery
and that he has eternal peace.
We also want to thank you for the use of the hall
to celebrate my Dad’s life with family and friends.
It was nice to know we had a place to go to do
this.
Tina Shaffer Family and the Matkoskey Family
I want to thank everyone for their cards and
prayers while I was in Siemons. Especially Jean
Taylor for her visits.
Carol Lease
.................................................................................
The family and I want to thank our church family
for all the cards and prayers sent our way after
Ray’s passing.
It means so much to have so many good friends.
We also want to thank the cooks and servers for
the dinner. It was delicious!
Thanks also to Pastor Ed for your visits.

The first bloodmobile of 2017 was held in
Friendship hall on July 7.
We had four people to donate double reds. Our
quota was 21 and we received 23 productive pints.
I would like to thank all my volunteers for going
the extra mile to help as I am still on the
wheelchair. Those who gave of their time were
Deb Kinney, Barb May, Carol Derencin, Sue
Ogline, Nancy Foley, Deb Hittie, Esther Weigle
and Pat Troy.
Our next bloodmobile will be Saturday, December
31, 2017 which will be our Lon Schrock Memorial
being done by the Central Blood Bank of Western,
Pennsylvania. Please reserve that date. At this
time they have a critical need for blood.
We had pizza from Fox’s (a gift from Thrivent)
and tossed salad to share with donors.
Again my sincere thanks to all who helped and
those who gave their time to give the gift of life!!
Bev Mostoller, Coordinator of the Bloodmobile
.................................................................................
Thank you to everyone who has brought back
“Meal of the Month” bags for our Salvation Army.
So far 85 bags have been received. Food received
goes to help local emergency food needs.
.................................................................................
Thank you for your prayers and thoughtfulness
while Mom was at “The Patriot.”

Dear Pastor and members of the Mission Outreach
Support Team – On behalf of the members of the
Holy Family Catholic Church I would like to
express our sincere gratitude for your generous
donation in the amount of $1,000.00.
With the consent of the council members of the
Holy Family Church, your donation will be used

your MOST team for coming to Richwood, West

The Mission Team Fundraiser at the annual
antique fair raised $406.03. Thanks to everyone
who provided food and/or helped that day!
................................................................................
Special thanks to Derek Zolla for handcrafting two
sturdy picnic tables for use here at the church.
They are located on the former Yoder property by
our fire ring. They will be used for Day Camp
cookouts, youth group camp fires, etc. Thanks
Derek!
................................................................................
We would like to thank you for the donation of
$664.33 for the work of the Next Step Center in
Somerset. Ours is the only homeless shelter in
Somerset County. Our purpose is to provide
emergency housing for neighbors in crisis due to
fire, flood eviction, job loss or unsafe living
conditions. Because of your donations and
continued support, we have assisted 62 guests,
which include 16 children last year in 2016.
Currently, 2017 we have assisted 27 guests, 4
children.
We appreciate the generosity of your donation. It
really does help! Your donation helps us purchase
the supplies we need to keep this house running
smoothly and to make our guests who stay with us
safe and comfortable. We appreciate your giving.
We also have a website at www.nextstepcenter.org
which you may visit anytime to get an inside look
at how comfortable and welcome our shelter is to
those that come to us.
Meals on Wheels would like to thank you for your
recent donation of $500.00. Gifts like yours help
to keep cost down and enables us to provide
nutritious hot meals five days a week.
Our fresh meals daily are a unique service in
Somerset County. There is no shortage of people
in need, and because we are not a government-
sponsored program people do not need to qualify
by age or financially. Our clients qualify because
they can no longer provide nutritious meals for
themselves. We are glad to provide these meals
and your gift helps make it happen.
There is an added benefit from our daily service.
Many of our clients have few contacts through the
week. Some see no on from day to day except the
Meals on Wheels volunteers. Even these contacts
are encouraging to lonely people. Frequently our
volunteers have discovered a health problem that
could have become a tragedy had no one stopped
by. Meals on Wheels provide a system of caring
that helps many of our neighbors.
Your gift will make a real difference for many
people.
.................................................................................
Dear FLC,
It was very meaningful that the meal committee
that our mother served with prepared such a
wonderful meal for her funeral. Thank you.
Sally Miller
.................................................................................
We want to express our sincere appreciation to
Pastor Ed, Deacon Pernelle, the funeral dinner
committee, and the FLC congregation for your
prayers and sustained long-distance “connection”
with our mother over the past five years of her
living with us in Winchester. Pastor Ed
eloquently stated the importance of “connections”
in his beautiful homily. Our mother knew the
importance of the “connections.
She would often express this in gardening terms,
“Grow where you are planted”; and she always
felt planted in Friedens and this congregation.
Thank you for your support and loving kindness.

Blessing of the Animals
Saturday, October 7th
11:00am – Rain or Shine
God has gifted us with aardvarks, zebras, and a
whole lot of animals in between! St. Francis of
Assisi was one of God’s servants who celebrated
God’s gifts in creation. It has been traditional
each year around his day – October 4th
– that
Christians give thanks to God for the gift of
animals and ask God’s blessing upon the.
So on Saturday, October 7th
we invite you to bring
your cats, dogs, chickens, hamsters, fish, and
maybe even aardvarks and zebras out to our
“Blessing of the Animals.” The short (about 20
minute) service of blessing will be held at the
front entrance (or under the drive through if
raining). Snacks for humans and animals will be
provided.
Please bring along any of the following as a gift
for our local Humane Society: Laundry soap,
dishwasher tabs, dryer sheets, dish soap, bleach,
copy paper, toilet paper, canned dog or cat food,
dry cat food, soft dog treats, cat treats, dog toys,
peanut butter, hand soap.
Note: All animals must be under the owner’s
control with a leash, carrier, etc.

God of tomorrows
This is the blessed life –
not anxious to see far in
front, nor eager to choose
the path, but quietly
following behind the
Shepherd, one step at a
time. The Shepherd was
always out in front of the
sheep. He was down in
front. Any attack upon them had to take him into
account.
Now God is down in front. He is in the
tomorrows. It is tomorrow that fills (people) with
dread. God is there already. All the tomorrows of
our life have to pass him before they can get to us.

we have an idea of how much food to purchase.
We need a couple of volunteers to assist in setting
up for the hotdog roast while the hayride is in
progress. Please talk with Deacon Pernelle if you
can help.

Our good God
For the love of God is broader
Than the measure of man’s mind
And the heart of the Eternal
Is most wonderfully kind
If our love were but more faithful,
We should take him at his word;
And our life would be thanksgiving
For the goodness of the Lord.
--Frederick W. Faber

Doing faith
Faith is better understood as a verb than as a noun,
as a process than as a possession. It is on-again-
off-again rather than once-and-for-all. Faith is not
being sure where you’re going, but going anyway.
A journey without maps. (As theologian) Paul
Tillich said…doubt isn’t the opposite of faith; it is
an element of faith.
-Frederick Buechner

Love’s lesson
A new school year promises new adventures,
challenges and friends – as well as new classes,
homework and lessons. But the most important
(and simplest) lesson we can learn is summed up
by 19th
century hymn writer Jane Eliza Leeson:
Savior, teach me day by day
Love’s sweet lesson to obey,
Sweeter lesson cannot be,
Loving him who first loved me.
