The Haskell was American Pharoah’s first start since winning the Belmont Stakes June 6 and running in the Travers potentially left him in a precarious position, with the Classic some nine weeks out.( On Tuesday, Baffert indicated to Daily Racing Form that American Pharoah would be pointed to the Classic.) “He was valiant in defeat,” Baffert said Sunday. “If he would have stopped running and finished fifth or sixth, you would have scraped me off the track. I would have been so mad at myself. You begin to feel like they’re invincible, and you forget they all get beat.” Keen Ice is clearly peaking for trainer Dale Romans and picked the right time to get his second lifetime win. The son of 2007 Classic winner Curlin had chased American Pharoah in his last three starts prior to the Travers and bridged the gap each time, as he was seventh in the Derby, third in the Belmont and second in the Haskell. Keen Ice is now 2-for-11 lifetime and Donegal owner Jerry Crawford is thinking the road less travelled will be the way his colt gets to Lexington. Romans called Saturday’s Travers “the biggest win in my career.”

American Pharoah’s Upset and Gleneagles Spur Classic Intrigue

While the “Graveyard of Favorites” may have claimed another victim Saturday in the $1.6 million Travers (GI) at Saratoga, Triple Crown winner AMERICAN PHAROAH lost little in defeat and is likely headed for a run in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Ahmad Zayat’s homebred 3-year-old son of Pioneerof the Nile suffered a shocking loss when he finished second by three quarters of a length to Donegal Racing’s KEEN ICE. The Classic also gained some added international intrigue on Tuesday with the announcement from that Michael Tabor, Mrs. John Magnier and Derrick Smith group one winner Gleneagles (IRE) would be pointed to the Classic. (See item below). Following the Travers, Baffert gave great praise to Zayat for sending American Pharoah to Saratoga, just 27 days removed after he earned an automatic starting berth into the Classic with a rousing comeback victory—over Keen Ice—in Monmouth Park’s “Win and You’re In” William Hill Haskell (GI) October 2.

“Look, our horse just has gotten better every single race, and there's no – one of the interesting questions is going to be do we train up to the Breeders Cup, or do we race between now and the Breeders Cup?” Crawford said. “My gut instinct at this very moment is that we might train up, given the enormity of what we've put him through. I'd be surprised if Dale wants to run him again between -- we've had a good strong campaign here.” Regardless of how Keen Ice gets to the Classic, Crawford is looking forward to another potential matchup with American Pharoah, especially since his horse appears to a vastly improved colt.

“What we’re excited about going forward is hopefully a rematch at the Breeders’ Cup Classic,” Crawford said. “We believe that at this moment, we have the best-bred, fastest 3-year-old horse in the world. We know our friends, the Zayats, might have a slight disagreement with that, so let’s get it on and meet up in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.”

Godolphin’s homebred FROSTED ran well to be third, despite being taken out of his preferred running style when replacement jockey Jose Lezcano decided to press American Pharoah from the outside for much of the first nine furlongs of the race. Frosted is winless in four starts since winning Aqueduct’s Wood Memorial (GI) in April and will likely test older horses for the first time in Belmont’s Jockey Club Gold Cup (GI) October 3. The Gold Cup is a “Win and You’re In” for the Classic. As for other Classic news, Spendthrift Farm’s two-time champion BEHOLDER, who secured a Classic berth when she decimated males by 8 ¼ lengths to become the first female to win the “Win and You’re In” TVG Pacific Classic (GI) August 22, is the clear-cut leader in California. The 5-year-old daughter of Henny Hughes was voted 2-year-old filly champion in 2012 for trainer Richard Mandella off a win in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita and 3-year-old filly champion off her win in the Distaff there in 2013, but may have much larger goals this year. Beholder, who is 14-for-19 lifetime, will likely prep for a potential Classic start in Santa Anita’s Zenyatta (GI) September 26, a “Win and You’re In” race she’s won the past two years. Lane’s End Racing and Dell Ridge Farm’s East Coast handicap leader HONOR CODE has resumed serious training after his thrilling neck win over LIAM’S MAP in Saratoga’s “Win and You’re In” Whitney (GI) August 8. The 4-year-old son of 1992 Classic winner A.P. Indy has won 3-of-4 this year for trainer Shug McGaughey but stepped up and showed he can be just as good at two turns as he is at one in the Whitney, when he closed a seemingly insurmountable late deficit to get up. Honor Code, who is 6-for-9 lifetime, also earned an automatic berth into the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile when he won Belmont’s “Win and You’re In” Metropolitan Handicap (GI) in June, is expected to prep for the Classic in either the Kelso (GII) or Gold Cup there October 3. Teresa Viola’s Liam’s Map, who lost an absolute heartbreaker in the Whitney after setting ridiculously fast fractions and just failing to hold late, will wheel back in run in Saturday’s $600,000 Woodward (GI) at Saratoga (see below). The 4-year-old son of 1995 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Unbridled’s Song is 4-for-6 lifetime and would be a major factor in the Classic, should he progress down that path for trainer Todd Pletcher. The “Eagle” to Land in Lexington Intense interest from overseas in the Classic also came alive on Tuesday with the announcement by trainer Aidan O’Brien that Coolmore’s top 3-year-old miler GLENEAGLES (IRE), who has been searching for firmer turf in Europe, will be targeted to the Breeders’ Cup Classic later this fall. The son of Galileo (IRE) has dominated the competition this year, going undefeated in three group I starts; the 2000 Guineas (GI) at Newmarket and Irish 2,000 Guineas at The Curragh in May and the St. James’s Palace at Royal Ascot June 16.

O’Brien was forced to scratch Gleneagles from the “Win and You’re In” Juddmonte International (GI) at York’s Ebor Festival August 19 due to the wet conditions and hopes he’ll be able to run September 12 in the QIPCO Irish Champion (GI) at Leopardstown, which is also a “Win and You’re In” for the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf. “Given suitable ground, Gleneagles will run in the Irish Champion on Saturday week and, failing that, he will be aimed at the Queen Elizabeth II at Ascot in October (17),” O’Brien said. “His end-of-season target is the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland, where he may face American Pharoah.” Gleneagles has won eight straight since losing his career debut at Leopardstown in June 2014, though he was disqualified from victory in Longchamp’s “Win and You’re In” Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere in October, his final start at 2. Overall Gleneagles is 7-for-9 lifetime and also counts The Curragh’s Vincent O’Brien (GI) among his four group I wins.

NBC’S COVERAGE OF AMERICAN PHAROAH’S SECOND-PLACE FINISH IS MOST WATCHED TRAVERS STAKES IN 20 YEARS Viewership up 32% vs. One-Hour Telecast of American Pharaoh’s Haskell Victory Fans packed the race track in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and tuned to NBC in big numbers Saturday.Stakes for the 146

th Travers Stakes. Viewership for the NBC telecast peaked at 3.4 million viewers between 5:45-

6:05 p.m. ET, as American Pharoah – the first Triple Crown winner in 37 years – was edged out in the stretch run by Keen Ice. Compared to American Pharoah’s victory in NBC’s one-hour Haskell Invitational telecast on August 2, viewership for the 5-6 pm ET hour of the Travers Stakes increased 32% (2.5 million for Travers; 1.9 million for Haskell) NBC’s full telecast (5:00-6:05 p.m. ET), averaged 2.0 million viewers to rank as the most-watched Travers Stakes telecast in 20 years (3.4 million viewers on 8/19/95, ABC). Saturday’s full telecast viewership was up 104% from last year’s Travers Stakes on NBC.

SATURDAY’S WOODWARD HEADLINE’S NBC’S BREEDERS’ CUP CHALLENGE SERIES- PRESENTED BY LANE’S END TELECAST AT 5 P.M. ON NBCSN Closing weekend at Saratoga will be highlighted by the $600,000 Woodward for 3-year-olds and up, and the Spinaway Stakes for 2-year-old fillies, which will award a Breeders’ Cup Challenge berth into the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. The live NBCSN telecast is a part of the “Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series Presented by Lane’s End Farm.” While Teresa Viola’s LIAM’S MAP, off his determined second place to Honor Code in the Whitney, will no doubt be a heavy favorite in the 1 1/8-mile Woodward, contention runs deep in a race that hardly takes a backseat to the Whitney and serves as a key stepping stone to the Gold Cup and potentially the Classic as well. The biggest danger could come from Godolphin’s homebred BAY OF PLENTY, who impressed when finally breaking through and wiring the field in the local Alydar August 2 for McLaughlin. The 4-year-old son of Medaglia d’Oro had dominated allowance foes throughout his career but secured his first career stakes win when he wired the Alydar at the Woodward’s 1 1/8-mile distance, and his front-running style could cause problems for the fleet Liam’s Map. Bay of Plenty is 5-for-9 lifetime and may be poised to deliver on the high promise he’s shown throughout his career.

Page 4: Countdown to the Breeders’ Cup World Championships Newsletter · for the 146th Travers Stakes. Viewership for the NBC telecast peaked at 3.4 million viewers between 5:45-6:05 p.m

Tri-Bone Stable’s EFFINEX would undoubtedly be the main beneficiary should Liam’s Map and Bay of Plenty hook up early and often, as his stretch-running style has enabled him to win 3-of-4 for trainer Jimmy Jerkens. The 4-year-old son of Mineshaft has advanced from the New York-bred ranks to a legitimate graded stakes performer and scored a career highlight when he won Belmont’s Suburban (GII) in his last start July 4. Effinex is 6-for-16 lifetime, but 4-for-7 since Jerkens added blinkers last fall. Centennial Farm’s WICKED STRONG has been hit or miss for Jerkens, but has done some of his best running at Saratoga. The 4-year-old son of Hard Spun won Aqueduct’s Wood Memorial (GI) in 2014 and the Jim Dandy over the Woodward’s track and distance last year, then suffered a brutal loss by a nose in the local Travers (GI) and has gone winless in six subsequent starts. Wicked Strong is 3-for-16 lifetime and was fourth in the Woodward, some 6 lengths behind Liam’s Map. Pletcher could have as many as three of Liam’s Map’s stablemates testing the Woodward, led by Mike Repole’s COACH INGE, who was third in Suburban in his last start and is another who could add some serious fuel to the pace fire. The 4-year-old son of Big Brown, who has turned the corner since being gelded this winter, won Belmont’s Brooklyn (GII) in June and is 4-for-11 lifetime. Goldmark Farm’s MYLUTE, second in the Alydar and Sumaya Stable’s PROTONICO, who won Churchill’s Alysheba (GII) in his last start May 1, are also potential starters for Pletcher. West Point Thoroughbreds’ COMMANDING CURVE, who was second in the 2014 Kentucky Derby but has won just an allowance race since for trainer Dallas Stewart, is also likely. Saratoga’s Spinaway to Offer Juvenile Fillies Berth While the Woodward may be the most prestigious of the quartet of stakes run at the Spa Saturday, it’s the $350,000 “Win and You’re In” Spinaway (GI) that will hold the most fascination. Run at seven furlongs for 2-year-old fillies, the Spinaway will offer a guaranteed starting berth into the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies and will mark the second career start for the immaculately bred RACHEL’S VALENTINA, a Stonestreet Stable homebred daughter of Bernardini, out of 2009 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra. She impressed in her debut for Pletcher, winning over the track August 2 after breaking slow and then putting in a powerful wide rally to win going away to suggest that seven furlongs—and beyond—is well within her wheelhouse. Stiff competition could come from Ron Winchell’s homebred JUST WICKED, who won the local prep, the Adirondack (GII), August 15 for trainer Steve Asmussen. The 2-year-old daughter of Tapit is 2-for-3 lifetime and is perfect in two starts over the local oval. OFF THE TRACKS and BANREE, the 1-2 finishers in the local Schuylerville (GIII) Opening Day July 24, could also start, as could Just Wicked’s stablemate and impressive local debut winner CONSTELLATION. Pletcher indicated Tonasah, who was second in the Adirondack, is also likely. Turf Bids on the line at Baden Baden This week’s international “Win and You’re In” action takes place in Iffezheim, Germany at Baden Baden Racecourse, where a pair of challenge races—the $302,475 Longines Grosser Preis Von Baden (GI) and T. Von Zastrow Stutenpreis $84,693 (GII)—will offer bids to the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf and Filly & Mare Turf, respectively. Sunday’s Preis Von Baden, run at about 1 ½ miles for 3yos & up, could draw Merry Fox Stud’s homebred SECOND STEP (IRE), who invaded from Newmarket to win the Grosser Preis Von Berlin (GI) at Hoppegarten August 9 for trainer Luca Cumani. The 4-year-old son of Dalakhani (IRE) is 5-for-9 lifetime and also won the Jockey Club (GII) at Newmarket in May. Gestut Schlenderhan’s homebred ITO (GER) and Stall Nizza’s Nutan (IRE), who were 2-3 in the Von Berlin, could also wheel back. The former suffered his first career defeat from five starts for trainer Jean-Pierre Carvalho, while the latter was favored off his win in the German Derby at Hamburg in July for trainer Peter Schiergen.

Saturday’s T. Von Zastrow Stutenpreis $84,693 (GII), run at about 1 ½ miles for fillies & mares, figures to draw a large field, with a Filly & Mare Turf bid on the line.

News and Notes Ivan Fallunovalot Pointing to TwinSpires Sprint

Lewis Matthews’ stakes winner Ivan Fallunovalot has been made eligible for the Breeders’ Cup and will be looking for one more prep before he takes aim at the TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Sprint. Trained by Tim Howard, the 5-year-old son of Valid Expectations with likely run in either the $150,000 Remington Park Sprint Cup September 27 or the $250,000 Phoenix October 2 at Keeneland. The Phoenix is a “Win and You’re In” race for the Sprint, though Howard might be inclined to run in an easier spot.

“We got to do a little research and see what’s best,” Howard said. “We want to get him there in good shape, without really putting rough miles on him and beating him up. The fresher I can go into it, the better I feel.”

Ivan Fallunovalot is 10-for-18 lifetime and returned from a four-month layoff to defend his title the David Vance Sprint at Remington Park August 15. He also won Oaklawn Park’s King Cotton in February and was second in their Count Fleet (GIII) in April.

Fast Filly Lady Shipman to Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint

Randall Lowe’s 3-year-old filly Lady Shipman, who set a new Mellon turf course record in Sunday’s 100,000 Smart N Fancy Stakes at Saratoga, is being pointed to the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint according to published reports. Trained by Kathleen O’Connell and ridden by Irad Ortiz, Jr., the 3-year-old daughter of Midshipman won her eighth race in 10 lifetime starts. Lady Shipman completed the 5 ½ furlongs in 1:00.46 in the Smart N Fancy. Changes for Two Championships Races With the Breeders’ Cup coming to Keeneland for the first time, there are condition and field size changes for two World Championships races: The Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf, for fillies and mares, 3-years-old and up, will be run at 1 3/16 miles and will be limited to a field of 12 horses. The Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, for 3-year-olds and up, will be contested at 5 ½ furlongs. It was run at 6 ½ furlongs at Santa Anita from 2012-2014. The race will continue to have a maximum of 14 starters.

Owner: Donegal Racing; Trainer: Dale Romans; Jockey: Javier Castellano

Time: 2:01.57 (fast) Countdown to the Breeders’ Cup Classic – Donegal Racing’s KEEN ICE (Javier Castellano) stunned an overflow crowd at Saratoga when he ran down Triple Crown winner AMERICAN PHAROAH by three quarters of a length in the $1.6 million Travers (GI). Dale Romans trained the winner, a 3-year-old son of 2007 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Curlin who has come to hand quickly this summer and has tossed his hat in the ring as the second best 3-year-old in the country. Keen Ice was a fringe player on the Triple Crown trail this winter but improved when third in the Belmont in June and was a fast-closing second to American Pharoah in Monmouth Park’s “Win and You’re In” William Hill Haskell (GI) August 2. Keen Ice is now 2-for-11 lifetime but is clearly on the upswing at the right time of the year. Ahmad Stable’s homebred American Pharoah won the battle after facing prolonged early pressure from eventual third-place finisher FROSTED, but lost the war in the lane when he came up empty while suffering his first defeat since his career debut at Del Mar in August 2014. The son of Pioneerof the Nile blitzed through the Triple Crown then won an automatic Classic berth with an easy win in the Haskell, but regressed just enough in the Travers. Godolphin’s Frosted did the dirty work early, pressing American Pharoah from the opening bell to midstretch, and paid the price late for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin. TEXAS RED, who defeated Frosted in the local prep, the Jim Dandy (GII) August 1, was a very disappointing fifth, though plans still call for him to run in the Classic, according to trainer Keith Desormeaux. Track: Parx Racing Finishing Order: 1 – ISLAND TOWN, 2 – SOUPER COLOSSAL, 3 – BATTLE MIDWAY 6 ¾, 3 ¾, ¾ Also ran: THIRTYSILVERPIECES, DIVINING ROD, BLUEGRASS SINGER Winning Connections:

Countdown to the Breeders’ Cup Classic – Six Column Stable’s ISLAND TOWN pressed SOUPER COLOSSAL early then ran away from him late for a dominant 6 ¾-length win in Parx Racing’s $300,000 Smarty Jones (GIII). The 3-year-old son of Hard Spun made amends for a disappointing run in a sloppy renewal of the Indiana Derby (GII) at Indiana Grand when he was fifth for trainer Ian Wilkes, and added the Smarty Jones to a resume that also includes Churchill Downs’ Matt Winn (GIII) in June. Island Town has now won half of his eight lifetime starts and looms a major contender for the local Pennsylvania Derby (GII) September 19. Odds-on favorite DIVINING ROD, who was third in the Preakness earlier this year, failed to fire and was a disappointing fifth for trainer Arnaud Delacour. Video: Smarty Jones

Race: $151,500 Philip H. Iselin (GIII), 3yos & up, 1 1/8 miles

Track: Monmouth Park Finishing Order: 1 – VALID, 2 – BRADESTER, 3 – MATTERHORN 3 ½, neck, 3 ½ Also ran: ALBANO, ANCHOR DOWN, MATROOH Winning Connections:

Owner: Crossed Sabres Farm; Trainer: Marcus Vitali; Jockey: Nik Juarez.

Time: 1:50.14 (fast) Countdown to the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic – Crossed Sabres Farm’s VALID (Nik Juarez) pressed the pace early then drew off late for a 3 ½-length win over arch rival BRADESTER in Monmouth Park’s $151,500 Philip H. Iselin (GIII). Marcus Vitali trained the winner, a 5-year-old son of Medaglia d’Oro who has been a gem of consistency in the graded stakes ranks over the past several years. Valid, who won the Fred Hooper (GIII) at Gulfstream Park in February and had hit the board in three straight stakes, including a third-place finish to Bradester in the local Salvator Mile (GIII) and second-place finish to him in the Monmouth Cup (GII), has now won 9-of-30 career starts. Track: Saratoga Finishing Order: 1 – SHEER DRAMA, 2 – GOT LUCKY, 3 – UNTAPABLE Margins: 1 ¼, neck, 1 ¾ Also ran: STOPCHARGINGMARIA, AMERICA, TIZ WINDY Winning Connections:

Owner: Harold Queen; Trainer: David Fawkes; Jockey: Joe Bravo.

Time: 1:49.05 (fast) Countdown to the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff – Harold Queen’s homebred SHEER DRAMA (Joe Bravo) drew clear late for a 1 ¼-length win over GOT LUCKY and earned an automatic starting berth in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff in Saratoga’s $717,500 “Win and You’re In” Personal Ensign (GI). The 5-year-old daughter of Burning Roma has turned into one of the best main track older fillies in the country this year for trainer David Fawkes and doubled up on a win in the Delaware Handicap (GI) in her last start July 18. Sheer Drama also won the Royal Delta (GIII) at Gulfstream Park in March and is now 6-for-19 lifetime. Fawkes is happy that his mare is peaking at the right time, though he also knows he wouldn’t complain if division heavyweight Beholder decides to run against males in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. “She's getting better as she's getting older. She's maturing. She does everything right,” Fawkes said. “We got our "Win and You're In" (for the Distaff) and hopefully, we're on our way to Keeneland now. Do I hope Beholder goes against the boys (in the Classic)? Absolutely. But If I've got to beat her too, I'll do it." Fawkes indicated that he’ll train Sheer Drama up to the Distaff. Ron Winchell’s homebred and defending Distaff champion UNTAPABLE relented in the stretch and finished third in an effort that further hinted she’s not the same runner who was voted champion 3-year-old filly last year for trainer Steve Asmussen, while favored STOPCHARGINGMARIA, who defeated Untapable in the local prep, the Shuvee (GIII) August 2 for trainer Todd Pletcher, was a disappointing fourth. Both could be in line for a start in Keeneland’s October 5 Juddmonte Spinster (GI), which is also a “Win and You’re In” for the Distaff. Video: The Personal Ensign

Race: $100,000 Torrey Pines (GIII), 3yo fillies, 1-mile

Track: Del Mar Finishing Order: 1 – STELLAR WIND, 2 – BIG BOOK, 3 – RATTATAPTAP Margins: 4 ¼, 3 ¼, 6 ½ Also ran: ROKSANA, ULTIMATE HOLIDAY, HONE IN Winning Connections:

Owner: Hronis Racing; Trainer: John Sadler; Jockey: Victor Espinoza.

Time: 1:36.43 (fast) Countdown to the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff – Hronis Racing’s STELLAR WIND (Victor Espinoza) left little doubt who the best 3-year-old filly in California is with a sharp 4 ¼-length win over BIG BOOK in Del Mar’s $100,000 Torrey Pines (GIII). John Sadler trained the winner, a 3-year-old daughter of 2007 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Curlin who returned from a brief freshening after winning the Summer Oaks (GII) at Santa Anita June 20. Stellar Wind also won the Santa Ysabel (GIII) and Santa Anita Oaks (GI) there this winter before running fourth in the Kentucky Oaks (GI) at Churchill Downs in May. She’s now won 5-of-7 lifetime starts and could run next in Santa Anita’s Zenyatta (GI), a “Win and You’re In” for the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff September 26. “We’ve got some big races ahead this fall, probably one prep before the Breeders’ Cup,” Sadler said. “It could be the Zenyatta at Santa Anita.” Video: Torrey Pines Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff – Breeders’ Cup Challenge (BCC) Winners and Points Leaders Points Horse Trainer Owner(s)

Owner: Juddmonte Farm; Trainer: Andre Fabre; Jockey: Vincent Cheminaud.

Time: 2:23.77 (firm) Countdown to the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf – Class reigned supreme in Saratoga’s “Win and You’re In” Sword Dancer (GI), as Juddmonte Farm’s international star FLINTSHIRE (GB) (Vincent Cheminaud) made quick work of his overmatched rivals with an easy 2 ½-length win over RED RIFLE and earned an automatic berth into the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf in the process. The homebred son of Dansili (GB) has racked up a litany of frequent flier miles over the past few seasons for trainer Andre Fabre while tackling the best horses in the world. Flintshire closed out 2014 with a bang, running second in Longchamp’s historic Arc de Triomphe (GI), then wheeling back and running second in the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Santa Anita before traveling to Hong Kong and winning the prestigious Hong Kong Vase (GI) at Sha Tin. He struggled this year, going 0-for-4, but had run in the money in a trio of classy European group I’s, including to superstar mare Treve in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud (GI) in his last start June 28. He’s now won 5-of-17 starts and will have a return engagement in the October 4 Arc, with a trip to Keeneland and the Turf a distinct possibility as well. Chad Brown trained the winner, a 4-year-old daughter of Scat Daddy who was making her U.S. debut and first start of the year after a successful career in her native Chile that saw her win a trio of grade I’s for trainer Juan Silva Gajardo. BREEDERS’ CUP CHALLENGE RACE

Winning Connections:

Owner: Good Friends Stable; Trainer: Jorge Navarro; Jockey: Martin Pedroza.

Time: 1:21.09 (fast) Countdown to the TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Sprint – Good Friends Stable’s PRIVATE ZONE (Martin Garcia) tightened his hold on the sprint division with a stellar 3 ¾-length win over THE BIG BEAST in Saratoga’s “Win and You’re In” $700,000 Forego (GI) and earned an automatic starting berth into the TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Sprint as a result. The 6-year-old son of 2000 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Macho Uno is 3-for-5 this year since being transferred to trainer Jorge Navarro’s barn, with his only two defeats coming to handicap star Honor Code when he was second in the Gulfstream Park Handicap (GII) in March and third in the “Win and You’re In” Metropolitan Handicap (GI) at Belmont Park in June. Around those runs he won the Churchill Downs (GII) in May and Belmont Sprint Championship (GIII) in his last start July 4. Private Zone has now won 10-of-30 career starts, including Belmont’s Vosburgh (GI) the past two years and Aqueduct’s Cigar Mile (GI) in November, and, while he has a spot in the Sprint, may opt for a longer test at Keeneland. "The way he did that yesterday, why not the (Breeders' Cup) Dirt Mile?,” Navarro said. “We have to see where Tonalist and Honor Code are going because those are two very nice horses, top horses. I think it is the Sprint we're sitting on top right now. We're going to the Breeders' Cup, but I hate to say which one right now.” Regardless of which Breeders’ Cup race Private Zone runs in, Navarro indicated he’ll train him up to the race. The Big Beast, who just missed in the local Vanderbilt (GI) August 1 for trainer Tony Dutrow, could run next in the Vosburgh, which is also a “Win and You’re In” for the Sprint. Time: 1:20.54 (fast) Countdown to the TwinSpires Breeders’ Sprint – Jim McIngvale’s RUNHAPPY (Edgar Prado) blitzed the field in Saratoga’s $500,000 King’s Bishop (GI) en route to a 4-length wire-to-wire win over LIMOUSINE LIBERAL. Maria Borell trained the winner, a 3-year-old son of Super Saver who has won three straight since being transferred from Laura Wohlers' barn this winter. Runhappy entered off a win in an Ellis Park optional-claimer July 31 and has yet to be behind a horse at any pace call in his three starts for Borell. He’s now 4-for-5 lifetime and will head to Lexington for a two-race campaign. “We'll point to the (Stoll Keenon Ogden) Phoenix Stakes next and then hopefully the (TwinSpires) Breeders' Cup (Sprint) at Keeneland," Borell said. The Phoenix (GIII), run October 2, is a “Win and You’re In” for the Sprint. Video: The King's Bishop

Stewart after an ambitious 2014 campaign that landed her in a quartet of grade I stakes for 3-year-old fillies where she hardly disgraced herself, including a third in the Kentucky Oaks (GI) at Churchill Downs. Unbridled Forever, who concluded her season with a fifth-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Santa Anita, is now 4-for-12 lifetime and will likely stick to the shorter of the two Breeders’ Cup races this year. “It's a 'Win and You're In' (the Filly & Mare Sprint) and now we're in,” Stewart said. “Hard to change her now. I don't know about stretching her out and then dropping her back, so we'll see." Favored DAME DOROTHY checked on the backstretch and never regained her position while checking in a disappointing sixth for trainer Todd Pletcher. Video: The Ballerina
