COUNSELLORS’ DAY 2016SFU Surrey Campus and Surrey City Hall
2016 Counsellors’ Day SFU Surrey campus
Thank you for joining us at BC Counsellors’ Day 2016.
The theme of this year’s event is Innovation. Today you’ll learn from our faculties how SFU innovates and explore SFU’s culture of engagement and collaboration. You’ll find out where an SFU degree can take your students, and hear about how our graduates leave SFU ready to blaze their own trails and impact society.
This year’s recruitment theme is Day One. We know your students are about to embark on an exciting new chapter in their lives and we understand the apprehension and sense of “leaving the known for the unknown” that many of your students will face. The Day One concept is about those moments in life that change everything.
We think of “day one moments” as times in life where something significant happens to change our direction. A day one moment for your student could be meeting their first friend on campus, taking a class that excites them so much they change their major, applying to go on international exchange, or deciding to step out of their comfort zone and join a club.
This year’s recruitment presentation focuses on relatable student stories. We want to create a memorable experience for your students and an emotional connection to what their life could look like after they leave high school. We want them to know that no matter which path they choose, they don’t have to have everything figured out right away; there will be plenty of forks in the road as they move forward. We want them to know they’ll be faced with many exciting choices, many options and many
“day one moments” throughout their lives.
We hope they will be open to exploration, innovation and to jumping in to university with both feet. This is the spirit of Day One.

How I Met My Major
Steve Birnie is the Associate Director, Student Engagement
and Retention, providing academic advising and student
success programming to undeclared students, student
athletes, and students in academic difficulty. Steve is an
alumnus of SFU (Geography, Political Science) and UBC
(Education) and worked as a middle school teacher in
Coquitlam before switching to SFU in 2008. Doctors have
yet to find a cure for his inexplicable dinosaur infatuation,
but his wife assures people they’re working on one.
