Royal College of NursingThe Royal College of Nursing (RCN) is a
union membership organisation with over395,000 members in the United Kingdom. Itwas founded in 1916, receiving its RoyalCharter in 1928, Queen Elizabeth II is thepatron. Most members are registerednurses but student nurses and healthcareassistants are also admitted. The RCNdescribes its mission asrepresenting nurses and nursing,promoting excellence in practice andshaping health policies. It has a network of

INTRODUCTION
For many years, the RCN hasrecognised the value of counsellingin health care settings, providing a
counselling service to RCN membersfor more than 20 years. Theguidance has been developed as part
of the RCNs Working well initiativeand outlines the role of staffcounselling within health serviceworkplaces.

SERVICE STAFF
COUNSELLING Counsellors should: Be qualified to a minimum of diploma
level
Be additionally trained to a levelappropriate to their role and setting
Be members of a relevant professional
body
Be supervised to the minimum levelrequired by their professional body
Not have any other roles with clients
