Can it be that a year can pass so quickly? That it can be stacked with so many activities? That so many things can change in such a short period of time – so many lives can change – yet so many things remain undone, lives untouched, dreams unrealized, goals unreached, lives shattered, issues unresolved, pain unhealed?

Yet above all this: HOPE remains, LOVE remains, FAITH remains and through this the vision is carried from year to year: “From the community to the community – with love!”

The period 2013 – 2014 has been a successful period as well as a challenging period – to

be expected. It saw new developments in the organization and new dreams. Everybody involved did more than their share to realize the vision and empower the community.

For this we extend our heartfelt gratitude. It is a joy, a privilege and an honour to collaborate with people who are so committed and passionate. We also want to thank the different communities who have opened their hearts to us, who sometimes feel so ill equipped to make a difference. Thank you for what we learn from you and that you grant us the honour to serve you, despite our short-comings.

The goals for the period 2013 – 2014 have been the following:

1. Administrative:•Build proper relationships with stakeholders•The goal was to enlist 5 Stakeholders. We built relationships with 13•Our relationships with GDE, DSD, Tshwane HIV/AIDS Management Unit, Future Families,

Child Welfare, King’s Hope, Olievenhoutbosch Disability Centre, Tateni, Dimphonyana, BEAM Africa, the schools we serve and the Tertiary Institutions we are involved with grew stronger.•We have set up new working relationships with the Department of Social Work at UNISA and

The Department of Educational Psychology – UP.•We hope to accommodate students from the University of the North West – Potchefstroom

campus. •We also hope to accommodate students doing a basic trauma course through UNISA

•Expand networks•Counselling@ has expanded to Western Cape through the initiative of Rehan Crause a

Clinical Psychologist in private practice in Cape Town. He has built a relationship with El Shaddai Ministries in Durbanville under the leadership of Pastor Gavin Brent who will host a satellite office of Counselling@ there.•We are also setting up a work relationship with Filadelfia College in Bloemfontein headed by

Craig Mobey and there will be interaction between ourselves and Filadelfia from next year.•A very important part of our expanding networks includes Bright Site. It is an organization

that places Social Work students from UNISA in the communities. We have agreed to endeavour to place Social Work students in all the facilities where Counselling@ is involved and have worked out referral procedures and collaboration between the social work students and ourselves.

• Consolidate offices •Through the course of 2013 – 2014 we have closed down two offices. This was as a result of

improper management from our side.•The office at Itereleng is underutilized due to a lack of counsellors and insufficient

communication between ourselves and the community leaders. It came to our attention that the leaders perceived the building on the church premises as an indication that we do not want them involved. We were under the impression that the people we negotiated with did represent the community. Our sincere apologies for this.•Many offices are ill equipped and at some of the offices there are still no office-space dedicated

to us. This causes a lot of inconvenience and we urgently need sponsors to put up temporary structures especially at PS Fourie, Nelmapius and Fred Magardie Primary schools.•Retha has been an enormous blessing in the administration of the offices although she

was overloaded and consequently developed a health problem. We are in urgent need of administrative staff to support the counsellors and management.

•Enlist more students, supervisors and volunteers•During the period of the report we had at times 104 counsellors operational. Due to students

completing their studies, volunteers leaving and both students and volunteers taking on new positions in other organizations we now have 75 counsellors operational.•During the period 2013 – 2014 we were unable to further our relationship with MGI and

subsequently did not receive any of their students.•We were blessed to receive the services of six Educational Psychology Counselling students

from the University of Pretoria. These students delivered an excellent service to the different facilities. We are also blessed to have the services of two Educational Psychology Masters students from the University of Pretoria. We hope that we will be able to continue this relationship.

•The Institute of Christian Psychology headed by Prof Nicolene Joubert provided us with five excellent students. Our desire is to expand this relationship as well. Prof Joubert will do a site visit on 21 October and we are excited about this.•Two students who are doing a trauma course through UNISA are rendering outstanding

services in Olievenhoutbosch and at Leratho House. We have made contact with Prof Venter at UNISA introducing our services to their department.•The same can be reported about the student from Filadelfia College in Bloemfontein.•Unfortunately we lost two students from Zimbabwe as their studies were not acknowledged

by the HPSCA.•Hulisani Mulaudzi from UniVen( University of Venda) has successfully completed his Board

examination and has registered as counsellor. He is now doing volunteer work for us. We want to congratulate him with his success. He has introduced our services to his friends and we hope to receive more students of his calibre from the University of Venda.•One counsellor who has completed his studies at Walter Sisulu University joined us and we

are still in the process of negotiating with Tshwane HIV/AIDS Unit to utilize his services in Atteridgeville.•One student from WITS University received a job offer and had to suspend her services.

However we want to congratulate Boikuthso on being admitted to a Master’s program at WITS.•As expected we received only five students from Mesites although some students from previous

years are still doing volunteer work with us and we are very grateful towards them for doing such an excellent job.•We have received enquiries from two Intern Psychometrists from UP and thirteen Psychology

Honours students from the University of North West – Potchefstroom campus whom we shall visit in the next month to negotiate volunteer work with them.

•Sixteen Social Work students from UNISA in their final year of study have been allocated to Counselling@ for the year 2014. This was a new venture and we are in the process of ironing out the hiccups but are excited by this new development. These students render a valuable service in community development projects, individual counselling and group counselling. They are mandated to do home visits and in this their services are invaluable.•During this period we have been blessed with the addition of three supervisors to supervise

the counselling students: Rita Malan (Educational Psychologist); Anna Eales (Counselling Psychologist) and Anel van der Walt (Registered Counsellor and qualified Play Therapist)•Dr Connie Haasbroek and Hettie Scheppel are also still on board.•We have also been blessed by a supervisor from the field of Social Work – Marie Zeelie - who

will join us next year.

•Make progress regarding a computerized administration and reporting system•Our initial project to become computerized did not materialize. However Ross Blinaut from

Hatfield Church who specializes in Project management for computer network development and maintenance has kindly offered to help us. Petro Kruger is liaising with him on our behalf. Petro has already computerized quite a few of our administrative processes in preparation for the big day when we can upload all this information on to an internet program. We extend our heartfelt gratitude towards Petro, Ross and Matiaan.

•Marketing and funding•This area is one of our biggest challenges. None of the board members or management

committee members is good at this. We made it an earnest matter of prayer and are pleased to announce the following breakthroughs:•We have been approached by Righteous Funds of Africa to expand our services under their

financial provision. This is still a very new venture and will not materialize immediately. However we are looking forward to the future and will provide information regarding this initiative as it becomes available. •Ross Blignaut has introduced us to Damaria – a company under the leadership of Innocence

Masilela. Inno has vast experience in writing proposals and has a lot of contacts. We are going into an agreement with her to assist us in this area. •As chairperson I appeared on “Ontbytsake” – this was a fruitless effort and wasted money.

It was an appearance of thirty seconds – far too little to make an impact. This aspect needs serious attention.•I also had two opportunities on RSG – many people heard the broadcast and commented

positively but no financial benefits came from it. •New avenues need to be investigated regarding radio, television and written media

exposure.•Heineken Sedibeng has invited us to apply for funding again in 2015 at the end of their

present sponsorship. They have not reported back to us regarding their level of satisfaction with our performance although Busisiwe has responded positively during a recent site visit.•We have made a proposal to Via Nova School that has been selected by the Department of

Education to be a resource centre for surrounding schools that battle. We hope that this will meet with the approval of the Department of Education.

•Make progress regarding sustainability•Two counselling offices have been prepared at Saffier Road. No paid counselling has taken

place here as yet due to a lack of marketing.•We have joined the More Money initiative introduced to us via Righteous Funds of Africa. By

means of opening e-wallets under our code a passive income can be obtained.

•We are currently positioning Counselling@ and its counsellors and volunteers to become a skills-training organization. Our counsellors and those students who cannot apply their studies to be counsellors can be trained as facilitators and assessors. When funds become available they can then be employed to train members from the community, teachers and parents. This is the core of the Counselling@ vision: to capacitate the community.•We welcome any inputs regarding creative ideas to enhance the sustainability of Counselling@

•Streamline administration and management•Retha Naude has been appointed co-ordinator. As has been mentioned she is overloaded and

this area of our functioning is in urgent need of upgrading.•The computerising of processes has already made a difference but more people are needed.

Funding to pay staff has been a major challenge and we hope to address this by proper fundraising.

2. Training:

•Train counsellors•Since the beginning of 2014 we have presented formal training sessions every Thursday

afternoon from 14H00 – 17H00. Many of these training sessions have been approved by the HPCSA as CPD opportunities for Psychologists and counsellors. The program as well as which sessions are CPD approved will appear as an annexure. The training was not compulsory. The attendance was excellent and 57 counsellors have been trained (we planned on training 20). The feedback we received is positive – however: the venue is not on a proper standard. Training is currently done at Saffier Road and the room is too small and either too hot or too cold. Due to our desire to offer the training free of charge to our students and volunteers we could not afford a rented hall. We need to pay attention to this.•We need to expand our training program to a second year in order to offer new and more

advanced training opportunities to volunteers who have completed the first year of training.•Counselling@ needs to be positioned as an accredited and registered training organization.

We have started the process but it is a difficult and challenging road.

•Train community members•During a part of 2014 we were involved in the training of community healthcare workers in

Mamelodi West. Due to administrative barriers on the side of Tshwane this initiative could not be developed to its full potential.•We are still involved with Tshwane HIV/AIDS management UNIT in Atteridgeville and trained

community healthcare workers in this region under the leadership of Patricia Mbatsha.•One of the social work students was active in Itireleng and supported Lindiwe Serage from

the Department of Health and Social Development to empower the community healthcare workers under her care.

•We presented training at King’s Hope regarding stress management•Two counsellors are involved with BEAM Africa doing life-skills training for young people who

are prepared by BEAM Africa to apply for jobs. This initiative is very successful and this model of life-skills training being presented before skills training is something that Counselling@ will apply in future.•Due to the departure of the two counselling students from Zimbabwe our initiative to empower

the community healthcare workers at Tateni came to a standstill. •Attendants in Ditshego School of laughter were trained with an Emotional Intelligence

program aimed at empowering them to respond in an emotionally aware manner to the pre-school children as emotional care is vital to the healthy development of these small children.•This program is now applied in Olivenhoutbosch at Love in Action where the mothers of

children who are abusing substances are receiving victim empowerment help and skills training.

•Training for the management committee regarding good governance•Talita Serfontein, Retha Naude and Vera Venter attended a day training course on Good

Governance on 18 June 2014.

•Continued professional development for the staff•Both Talita Serfontein and Dr Meyer attend regular CPD training to concur with the regulations

of the HPCSA and to ensure that the training approved and/or presented by them is of the highest academic standard yet practical.

3. Counselling:

•Support learners with subject choices and career guidance•Nearly 200 Gr 9 learners from Nelmapius Secondary School have been assessed regarding

subject choices.•Eleven Gr 9 learners from Excelsior School have been helped with subject choice guidance

during 2013 and thirteen again this year.•Two Gr 9 learners from Middelburg High School have been supported regarding subject choices.•We experience a challenge to get consent from parents even though this service is free of charge.•It is also a challenge to find time in the busy school program to set apart two mornings per

learner for the assessment.•We intend to do a screening for school readiness at Fred Magardie Pre-primary school in

collaboration with the Psychologist from GDE.

•Support Psychologists from GDE re learner assessment•We have been involved in four full service schools in Tshwane South as well as three other

primary schools where the counsellors have assessed more than a hundred learners regarding learning problems.

•Parental guidance:•Parental guidance sessions took place at Walter Sisulu primary school, Wonderboom Suid

Laerskool, Nelmapius primary school, Ditshego school of laughter( a pre-primary school), Laudium secondary school, The Glen secondary school, Seaparankwe primary school, Transvalia Combined school, Excelsior school, Entheos Christian school Suiderberg secondary school and Rietvallei Akademie.

•Teacher guidance:•In all the above schools guidance was available to the teachers. They did not make use of it on

an individual basis as much as we would have desired.•At Nelmapius primary school, Transvalia combined school and Wonderboom Suid Laerskool,

group acitivites were arranged for the teachers to be empowered regarding discipline, understanding of the challenges of the children and stress management.

•Individual counselling:•Individual counselling sessions were conducted at all the facilities where Counselling@ has

offices. A complete list of our offices as well as the statistics regarding the amount of adults and children counselled appears as an annexure. Counselling@ planned to counsel 2400 clients over the period of this report. 3273 clients have been counselled during the period. It must, however, be appreciated that less than half the counsellors have made their statistics available. Taking into account that none of these offices are staffed five days per week and the limited statistics coming in the real picture is actually impressive.•A complete list of our offices appears as an annexure.

•Group counselling:•Group work was conducted at Atteridgeville with the community healthcare workers from the

HIV/AIDS management UNIT of Tshwane municipality•Groupwork was done at Berg-en-Dal pregnancy centre•At Suiderberg secondary school small groups had a positive impact on the learners•Groupwork was attempted at Nelmapius secondary school. This needs some strategic planning

as it did not work well.•The group facilitation done with the community healthcare workers in Mamelodi West was

well received.

•In Itireleng one of the social work students handled the groups from Dept of Health and Social Development of Tshwane municipality•Another social worker did support groups in Olievenhoutbosch for people affected by drugs.•At Love in Action in Olievenhoutbosch our social work student and our counsellors run groups

for the mothers of the children in drug abuse.•100 group sessions have been presented during the report period. •Our counsellors took part in the training of 138 peer educators (bringing the amount that are

operational since we started to 148), 218 volunteers to do home based care visits (bringing the amount operational since we started to 289).

Community Development

4. Community development:

•Collaborate with stakeholders in the community to empower peer counsellors:•Counselling@ has been involved in the different regional forum meetings throughout

Tshwane South: Atteridgeville, laudium, Mamelodi West, Olievenhoutbosch and Wonderboom. The objective is two-fold: •To identify the needs of peer counsellors – also called community healthcare workers and

to provide services to the different NPO’s and FBO’s regarding debriefing and training of these individuals.•To build networks and integrate the work of different NPO’s•We have not reached as many peer-counsellors as we wanted to – partly due to the counsellors

leaving and also due to the fact that the whole peer counsellor structure is in a process of transformation to get it in line with the re-engineering of primary healthcare in the country. This is called Ward Based Outreach Teams. Despite these obstacles we have done more than the anticipated amount of work.

•Continue with a role in community development projects:•One of the most important community development projects is the registration of the informal

ECD facilities with the Department of Social Development. Only a few of these facilities are in line with the by-laws regarding safety, ventilation and health. There are also only a few where the teachers and assistants are sufficiently trained. Counselling@ has been actively and strategically involved in the process of empowering these facilities. We have made contact with two NPO’s that do training for pre-primary teachers and assistants. We are currently working on a MOU with a training company –SPS Consulting - under the leadership of Simon and Patience Sekete to equip more facilitators to do skills training from the beginning of

2015 for these teachers. Anel van der Walt is our co-ordinator of the ECD project. We do not intend to do all the work ourselves but to empower as many NPO’s as possible to deploy their facilitators. To this end we are doing proposals to different companies for funding. This is an enormous undertaking as we can positively influence the lives of 5000 pre-primary school children in Olievenhoutbosch alone as well as all the teachers, assistants and parents involved in these facilities.•Community members from Olievenhoutbosch have decided to do something about the drug

abuse problem in the area. They have started the NPO Love in Action. As chairperson of Counselling@ I am on the board of the NPO. From the side of Counselling@ we have made contact with NICRO to support the children once they have returned from rehab. I have also made contact with Guardian Ministries running a rehab facility in Tijgerpoort – called Ezekiel House. They have indicated that they are willing to mentor Love in Action and can train counsellors to work with addicted individuals and co-dependent individuals. We look forward to strengthen this bond.•A delegation from the Brits community visited Counselling@ to ask for mentoring regarding

the setting up of a rehab facility in Brits. This relationship will hopefully be developed.•The Wonderboom schools forum is looking for programs that can be presented to teachers,

parents and children that will alleviate the problems experienced due to substance abuse, unwanted pregnancies, HIV/AIDS, abuse and behaviour problems. Counselling@ has introduced Dr Darleen Edwards-Meyer to them and an agreement will probably be reached for the implementation of her programs in the schools and the communities in that region.•All these initiatives will act as pilot studies to certain the sustainability of these interventions

with the hope that it can be implemented in other areas in Tshwane South and the satellite offices in other parts of the country.

5. Conclusion:

As I wrote this report and went through the stacks of photos taken through the course of the year I was on the one hand humbled by the passion, dedication and expertise of our counsellors and staff and on the other hand extremely thankful to God Who made all this possible. We are often asked whether we exclude people as a result of our Christian foundation. This is not the case: love as Jesus lived it and taught it, is generic in our opinion. We know from the field of neurobiology that the centres, structures and circuits in the brain which develop first – even from before birth – are those that enable us to be relational beings. Damage done at and from an early age as far as emotional nurturing is concerned can limit the individual’s development and leave her crippled and vulnerable for further abuse. To prevent this and alleviate the suffering as a result of the neglect, abuse and lack of knowledge - THAT is our calling!

He equipped people from the communities to guide and teach and bring His healing to others around them.
