Congratulations to the Class

of 2022 on successfully com -

pleting their first semester of high

school! Although the first semester presented a lot

of challenges while getting used to a new school,

new classes, new teachers, and new expectations,

the Class of 2022 emerged from the ashes of se-

mester 1 with new friends, a new mindset,

and high school credits!

123 out of 189 (65%) of our freshman passed all of

their classes first semester! Let's keep the hard

work going and reach our goal of 70%!.

As a reminder, in order to earn high school credits

toward the 24 credits that are required to gradu-

ate, students will need to earn a grade of a D or

higher. In order to be considered a sophomore

next year, students will need 6 credits or more.

If a student earned an F in a class, the missing

credit can be recovered by retaking the class

online in Credit Recovery (after school Monday,

Tuesday & Thursdays) or in summer school. See

your counselor to sign up or if you have any ques-

tions.

We have all heard the term "New Year, New Me". January marks the beginning of a new year, a fresh start, a renewed mindset. So what better month than to celebrate ourselves as people and all of the unique differences and ways we contribute to the world! Take some time every day this month to reflect on how the ways in which your family and friends are different from you, add to and benefit your life. Have conversations with each other to explore your different learning styles, value systems, histories and inter-ests. But through it all, remember that there will only ever be ONE YOU and it is okay to be different!

What is Khan Academy:

Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instruction-al videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower students to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. It tackles math, sci-ence, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. NCCHS is using Khan Acade-my with all juniors to help prepare them to take the Official SAT on April 9, 2019.

20 HOURS OF PRACTICE IS ASSOCIATED WITH A 115-POINT

AVERAGE SCORE INCREASE FROM THE PSAT TO THE SAT,

DO NOT PRACTICE ON OFFICIAL SAT PRACTICE.

2. Khan Academy reduces the number of remedial

courses students need to take.

Remedial classes are courses that may be required for students to

build up their skills in math, reading, or English before they are

allowed to take regular college courses. This not only means that

you have to delay taking college-level courses until you complete

the remedial courses, but it also means that you are paying for a

course that won't count as credit towards your degree.

The Postsecondary Team is proud to spotlight NCCHS Alum, Mr. Blake Collins. Blake Collins proudly

represents the class of 2009. Blake describes his high school journey as one where he struggled as a stu-

dent and never really found himself; despite his “big man on campus” persona. Blake was well liked and

considered an all-around athlete. He was the Varsity quarterback and an IHSA State Qualifier in the

Three Point Contest; but, these accomplishments did not help his struggle in the classroom. However, he

remembers several teachers who believed in him and continuously pushed him towards excellence. Over

the last decade, he has worked diligently, becoming a role model and productive individual.

After graduating from NCCHS, Blake attended Spoon River Community College. He says, “starting at a

community college gave him the foundation he needed to be a successful student at the University lev-

el”. He later transferred to Western Illinois University, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Parks &

Recreation Administration & Tourism, earning a 3.5 GPA. It was during his college experience that he

found himself, learning to persevere through adversity, which he believes is the key to success.

Blake currently serves as the Program Coordinator for North Chicago Community Partners, and the Ath-

letic Coordinator for Foss Park District. In these capacities, he is able to pursue his passion of serving the

community of North Chicago, especially the youth, and giving back. Blake’s advice for the students and

youth that he works with is: “Give yourself a chance and never give up!”

¡Felicitaciones a la Clase del

2022 en completar con éxito su pri-

mer semestre de la escuela secunda-

ria! Aunque el primer semestre presentaba muchos

desafíos mientras se acostumbraba a una nueva es-

cuela, nuevas clases, nuevos maestros y nuevas expec-

tativas, la Clase de 2022 surgió de las cenizas del se-

mestre 1 con nuevos amigos, una nueva mentalidad y

niveles de créditos escolares de secundaria.

¡ 123 de 189 (65%) de nuestros estudiantes de primer

año aprobaron todas sus clases el primer semestre!

¡ continuemos con el trabajo duro y alcancemos nues-

tra meta del 70%!.

Como recordatorio, para poder obtener créditos de la

escuela secundaria para los 24 créditos que se requie-

ren para graduarse, los estudiantes deberán obtener

una calificación de D o mas alta. Para ser considerado

un estudiante de segundo año el próximo año, los es-

tudiantes necesitarán 6 créditos o más.

Si un estudiante obtuvo una F en una clase, el crédito

faltante puede recuperarse retomando la clase en lí-

nea en Recuperación de créditos (después de la escue-

la los lunes, martes y jueves) o en la escuela de ve-

rano. Consulte a su consejero para inscribirse o si tie-

ne alguna pregunta.

Todos hemos escuchado el término "Año Nuevo, Nuevo Yo". Enero marca el comienzo de un nuevo año, un nuevo comienzo, una mentalidad renovada. Entonces, ¡qué mejor mes que cele-brarnos como personas y todas las diferencias únicas y las formas en que contribuimos al mundo! Tómese un tiempo todos los días este mes para reflexionar sobre cómo las formas en que sus fami-liares y amigos son diferentes a usted, aumentan y benefician su vida. Conversen entre sí para explorar sus diferentes estilos de aprendizaje, sistemas de valores, historias e intereses. Pero a pe-sar de todo, recuerde que solo habrá UNO USTED y está bien ser

Que es la Academia Khan:

La Academia Khan ofrece ejercicios de práctica, videos instructivos y un panel de aprendizaje personalizado que permite a los estudiantes estudiar a su propio ritmo den-tro y fuera del salón. Aborda las matemáticas, la ciencia, la programación de computadoras, la historia, la historia del arte, la economía y más. NCCHS está utilizando la Academia Khan con todos los jóvenes para ayudarlos a prepararse para tomar el SAT oficial el 9 de abril de 2019.

2. La Academia Khan reduce la cantidad de cursos de

Las clases de refuerzo son cursos que pueden ser requeridos pa-

ra que los estudiantes desarrollen sus habilidades en matemáti-

cas, lectura o inglés antes de que se les permita tomar cursos

universitarios regulares. Esto no solo significa que tiene que de-

morarse en tomar cursos de nivel universitario hasta que com-

plete los cursos de recuperación, sino que también significa que

está pagando un curso que no cuenta como crédito para su títu-

lo.

El equipo postsecundario se enorgullece de destacar a NCCHS Alum, el Sr. Blake Collins. Blake Collins

representa con orgullo a la clase de 2009. Blake describe su viaje a la escuela secundaria como uno en el

que luchó como estudiante y nunca se encontró a sí mismo; A pesar de su "gran hombre en el campo".

Blake era muy querido y considerado un atleta completo. Fue el mariscal de campo de Varsity y un clasifi-

cado de IHSA State en el concurso de tres puntos; pero, estos logros no ayudaron a su lucha en el salond e

clases. Sin embargo, recuerda a varios maestros que creyeron en él y lo empujaron continuamente hacia

la excelencia. Durante la última década, ha trabajado diligentemente, convirtiéndose en un modelo a se-

guir y en un individuo productivo.

Después de graduarse de NCCHS, Blake asistió al Colegio Comunitario Spoon River . Él dice, "al comen-

zar en un colegio comunitario le dio la base que necesitaba para ser un estudiante exitoso a nivel universi-

tario". Más tarde se trasladó a la Universidad de Western Illinois, obtener una Licenciatura en Ciencias

en Administración y Turismo de Parques y Recreación, obteniendo un GPA de 3.5. Fue durante su expe-

riencia universitaria que se encontró a sí mismo, aprendiendo a perseverar a través de la adversidad,

que él cree que es la clave del éxito.

Blake actualmente se desempeña como Coordinador de Programa para los Socios Comunitarios de North

Chicago y como Coordinador de Deportes para el Distrito de Foss Park. En estas capacidades, puede con-

tinuar con su pasión de servir a la comunidad de North Chicago, especialmente a los jóvenes, y retribuir.
